I borrowed one of these recently and was very impressed by the build quality. If you're going to throw a laptop in a bag over and over, there really is no better option.

I think you should try to up the budget to £800 for this.
.
what about the 13" version (Clevo W230ST)
https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/optimusV-13/
all the same specs and the same price but the standard screen is higher quality (IPS)
its also quite a bit thinner than the 15" version 32.9mm instead of 42.7mm) and lighter but that's to be expected.
also the website sets its ram configuration for 8GB using only a single SODIMM does this effect performance as I though DDR ram usually operated best in pairs.
EDIT: stuff it bought the 13" version
One of these?Could you guys help me with a non gaming laptop?
My sister asked me to recommend her a laptop for my niece (12 yr old) on a budget of $400. She'll just be using it for basic tasks not heavy gaming or anything, but I thought I'd still ask you guys for an idea of a good bang for buck laptop.
I've been a Mac guy for over a decade, so I'm not sure who's been making good PCs lately.
I just assumed you wanted a 15". The W230st is really nice, with a beautiful IPS.
Post back when you get it.
After some looking around I'm totally torn between these two:
http://www.xoticpc.com/asus-n550jvdb72t-touch-p-6116.html
http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np7330-clevo-w230st-p-6163.html
Either one out the door configured the way I want is around $1600. The Asus is 15.6" (versus 13.3" for the Sager), is a touchscreen, slightly thinner but about a pound heavier.
edit: I'm basically looking for a desktop replacement. I don't need to running everything on "ultra" but this laptop will frequently be plugged into a 24" monitor with a mechanical keyboard attached. Of course, I also want to take it to other locations in the house and when I'm traveling as well.
Hi guys, could anyone please help me find a website that delivers AZERTY (French keyboards) laptops in the UK? Tried eBay and Amazon but all the keyboards are English. I need it for my dad with the following specs: 17" screen, 4GB ram and 1GB dedicated video card, i3 Intel processor and 500GB hdd. Budget is £500 max. thanks in advance.
Where I can I find an enclosure for the SDD I bought? It slides out whenever I move my laptop.
I appreciate the response, thanks a lot.I'm having a hard time finding one with an AZERTY option. Try contacting PCSpecialist.

You guys think this is good value???
I'm going to guess no since I have a DVD player. You have it in the DVD bay? You can find those brackets on eBay.
I'm going to guess no since I have a DVD player.
If you can afford it why not?
I am looking at this:
http://www.xoticpc.com/msi-gx60-3be240us-preorder-p-6157.html
The AMD APU in the GX60 drags down the 8970M's performance massively. You're much better off with with an Intel i7 + 765M or 770M combo. Say no to the GX laptops.
i find that the lenovo Y5xx series laptops are the best bang for the buck. you can cop them at sub 1000 with the new or old i7's, dual gtx660m and 1tb+ boot ssd.
I thought the Trinity was only bad in non gaming applications?

I have been looking at getting a new laptop as my old one is dying and the display and resolution are poor.
I was looking at a Retina Macbook but they are so expensive, how crisp would the screen the W230st be? I take it not as good as a Retina Macbook but I take it it would be a big jump if I am used to 1366x768 on an 11 inch screen?
This laptop fits all my other requirements so I may well get it.
I'm leaning towards $1300 on a GTX 765M or even 770M equipped laptop being a far better deal, than the $1200 750M SLI Y510P..
I'm dumb. Completely forgot that Anandtech already tested the new GX60. I'll let the tests speak for themselves.
I went from a 13" 1366x768 Screen to the w230st and it's a huge leap from that. You won't regret getting it, the screen looks amazing.
Great thanks for the feedback it seems almost the exact type of laptop I want I know it wont be the lightest but what is the weight like?
It is a little heavier/bulkier than I expected but it's not ever gonna be a problem. It's still light, it's just not as light as my last laptop (Acer 3820tg). It is a little loud as well btw (The fan) but apparently that's due to a poor Fan Profile. It's quiet for ages then will suddenly go full blast for a minute. A bios update should sort it
Someone on another forum summed it up well, it's the internals of a larger 15" laptop packed into a 13" shell with no real compromises.
Let me try to be more clear. My SSD is internal and when I got it I didn't have anything to screw it in place inside. Nothing is hold it from slipping out of the connection. I'm looking for something to keep it from doing that.So then is this what you're seeking? If not, help me understand.
How's the battery life on that without gaming usage? (Light browsing with ~medium brightness)

The screen on this laptop is so good you might not even care about the angle you view it from. Where the original 13.3-inch Zenbook had a 1600 x 900 traditional LCD panel with poor viewing angles, the 1920 x 1080 IPS display obliterates the issue. Not only can you view images and colors from almost any angle with only a slight loss of brightness, but it's one of the best displays I've seen on a laptop, period. Images are crisp, fonts look great, colors are vivid, and both whites and blacks are pure. Best of all, Asus manages all that with a matte screen that keeps reflections from disturbing your play and work. It's not perfect in a dark room, with a dark image, I could see some backlight bleed around the edges of the screen but the display is exceptional in just about every other way. If you're buying a Zenbook, make absolutely sure it has this "Full HD" screen, because the inferior 1600 x 900 panels are also a cheaper option.
In fact, I put the UX31A's 1080p panel head to head against the 2880 x 1800 Retina display (220ppi) in Apple's new MacBook Pro, and the 165ppi screen on the Zenbook actually comes respectably close. While fonts and images don't have quite the incredible level of detail as they do on Apple's machine (see images above), that matte coating doesn't hurt, and the Retina display actually seems to have a blueish-purple tint when compared to the clean whites of the Zenbook. It's worth noting that at the 1080p native resolution, icons can be quite small and hard to manage by default. You may want to manually set the DPI to 150 percent by tweaking the setting in the Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Display menu. You could also adjust the resolution to a lower setting, like the MacBook Pro with Retina display does by default, but the Zenbook's screen is crispest at native resolution, for sure.
First off, the GT 720M is a terrible card, as far as gaming is concerned. Second, your budget does not afford any future proofing. Can you possibly make the $850 to $900 range?I'm looking to get a large-ish pretty good gaming laptop thats slightly future proof. This one is right around my price range (no more than $800) and everyone seems to say good things about Lenovo. What do you guys think? Should I bite?

This is what The verge had to say about the screen that's in the Clevo:
It's simply an amazing IPS panel.

I guess I should be more clear, I'll be doing some light gaming with this laptop, nothing extensive though. I could probably go up to $900 though.

Thanks man order placed

After spending the last year with my Sony VAIO S15, I can't imagine ever going back to a crappy TN panel. IPS makes the entire computer using experience that much more pleasant.
Cheap is relative, and much more so is what qualifies as a "good" video card. It's only about how much are YOU willing to spend, maximum. We can't guess at it.Hello, I have a question. I am looking for a cheap laptop for some gaming. It doesn't need to have any fancy features or a lot of RAM or processing speed. I just need a laptop that has a good video card (Intel HD Graphics excluded). Any ideas? Games I would like to run on it smoothly include GTA IV. I live in the US.
Yeah that is the best deal for SLI 750Ms. I wish you luck on it being there a month from now.Found this on Newegg.com:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834312834
What caught my attention:
Dual SLI 750m at 2x2GB GDDR5
Cheaper than buying it at Leveno website and customizing it.
I think I'm going to buy this laptop at the end of the month...I don't think I can find the same laptop with the same specs for that price anywhere else...I hope that it isn't sold out by the time I get the $$$ for it.
I'm leaning towards this model at the moment - MSI GT70 2OD-064US - XOTIC PC - MSI Gaming Laptop but wanted to make this thread to see if there were any other suggestions or if any knew when Samsung's Gamer Series would have new models out with the Haswell processors and 700M line of graphic cards
Thanks in advance ^_^
edit: seriously considering an Alienware 17 if I can get them to customize one with 780M close to $2k, apparently you should be able to get one at $2200 starting and then there's a coupon to knock $100 off and according to multiple people Alienware is willing to haggle if you call them and lower the price further
CyberPower is reliable.Any of you purchased off of CyberPowerPC.com ?
Have never considered them before, but it seems like they have decent deals for middle of the road gaming notebooks. Looking at the
"XPLORER X7-7600 GAMING NOTEBOOK"
Basically just adding an SSD and that's about it.
