Hmmm, I can't really wait for the fall but thanks for posting recommendations. What about a MacBook Air? Is that a good bang for the buck? I really can't find an equivalent pc it seems

I just got an old Medion Erazer X6817 (i7 2670 QM, 8 GB, GTX 560M) for dirt cheap. Does anyone have experience with this model or other Medions?

I borrowed one of these recently and was very impressed by the build quality. If you're going to throw a laptop in a bag over and over, there really is no better option.

Seconding the Lenovo recommendation. I used an IBM and then a couple of Lenovo laptops as my primary machines at my previous workplace. Every one to two years or so we'd get upgraded.

Like everyone else at work after the first couple of months of use after getting a new machine I'd treat those things like crap. I knocked my laptops onto the floor off the edge of a desk dozens of times; the bag I carried it in got dumped on the floor hard almost every day on the tube.

A bloke on my team once got so majorly pissed off with an email from a client that he punched his laptop screen full strength. Utterly hilarious. The laptop opened out fully flat from the force, shot across the conference table and crashed to the floor. When he picked it up sheepishly after his little rage fit subsided it still worked fine as if nothing happened.

Business laptops are always the best for hardiness as no one gives a damn about something they haven't paid for themselves. They're built to withstand serious abuse.

I keep telling him to go with Lenovo (since I LOVE my Y500 and now swear by them as a laptop brand), but he is trending towards stuff that's more "available now" at a big box store. It's really hurting him in the long run, but I can't tell him how to spend his money.

I will, however, forward this along. Thanks!

I think you should try to up the budget to £800 for this.
.

what about the 13" version (Clevo W230ST)
https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/optimusV-13/

all the same specs and the same price but the standard screen is higher quality (IPS)
its also quite a bit thinner than the 15" version 32.9mm instead of 42.7mm) and lighter but that's to be expected.

also the website sets its ram configuration for 8GB using only a single SODIMM does this effect performance as I though DDR ram usually operated best in pairs.

EDIT: stuff it bought the 13" version

Could you guys help me with a non gaming laptop?

My sister asked me to recommend her a laptop for my niece (12 yr old) on a budget of $400. She'll just be using it for basic tasks not heavy gaming or anything, but I thought I'd still ask you guys for an idea of a good bang for buck laptop.

I've been a Mac guy for over a decade, so I'm not sure who's been making good PCs lately.

After some looking around I'm totally torn between these two:

http://www.xoticpc.com/asus-n550jvdb72t-touch-p-6116.html

http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np7330-clevo-w230st-p-6163.html

Either one out the door configured the way I want is around $1600. The Asus is 15.6" (versus 13.3" for the Sager), is a touchscreen, slightly thinner but about a pound heavier.

edit: I'm basically looking for a desktop replacement. I don't need to running everything on "ultra" but this laptop will frequently be plugged into a 24" monitor with a mechanical keyboard attached. Of course, I also want to take it to other locations in the house and when I'm traveling as well.

Well, there's a huge power gap, between the GT 750M DDR3 and GTX 765M GDDR5. The latter is well over twice as fast.

Guess I'll be getting the ASUS G750JX-T4128H Laptop model, will get it by the end of August. Over here it's going for around $2100, but will try to haggle for a cheaper price XP
Some of the specs the shop provided:
Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-4700QM - 2.40 GHz / 6MB
RAM: 16 GB
HDD: 1.5 TB (XoX)
Based off the ASUS website these should also be their specs:
http://www.asus.com/ae-en/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/G750JX/#specifications

So the graphics card should be NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770M.
Will double check that with them and also see if I can get Windows 7 working on it, as I don't want Windows 8...
Now I just hope I won't have to pay for any insurance or car repairs for the next few weeks >_<

i find that the lenovo Y5xx series laptops are the best bang for the buck. you can cop them at sub 1000 with the new or old i7's, dual gtx660m and 1tb+ boot ssd.

I'm leaning towards $1300 on a GTX 765M or even 770M equipped laptop being a far better deal, than the $1200 750M SLI Y510P..

I thought the Trinity was only bad in non gaming applications?

I'm dumb. Completely forgot that Anandtech already tested the new GX60. I'll let the tests speak for themselves.

I have been looking at getting a new laptop as my old one is dying and the display and resolution are poor.

I was looking at a Retina Macbook but they are so expensive, how crisp would the screen the W230st be? I take it not as good as a Retina Macbook but I take it it would be a big jump if I am used to 1366x768 on an 11 inch screen?

This laptop fits all my other requirements so I may well get it.

I went from a 13" 1366x768 Screen to the w230st and it's a huge leap from that. You won't regret getting it, the screen looks amazing.

Thanks for this. I looked at a comparison and they had the card you recommend at 1.3 gflops and the radeon at 2.3 gflops. Most likely I am getting the 770m.

Thanks for the help. Too bad the cavs suck.

It is a little heavier/bulkier than I expected but it's not ever gonna be a problem. It's still light, it's just not as light as my last laptop (Acer 3820tg). It is a little loud as well btw (The fan) but apparently that's due to a poor Fan Profile. It's quiet for ages then will suddenly go full blast for a minute. A bios update should sort it

Someone on another forum summed it up well, it's the internals of a larger 15" laptop packed into a 13" shell with no real compromises.

How's the battery life on that without gaming usage? (Light browsing with ~medium brightness)

So then is this what you're seeking? If not, help me understand.
Let me try to be more clear. My SSD is internal and when I got it I didn't have anything to screw it in place inside. Nothing is hold it from slipping out of the connection. I'm looking for something to keep it from doing that.

This is what The verge had to say about the screen that's in the Clevo:

The screen on this laptop is so good you might not even care about the angle you view it from. Where the original 13.3-inch Zenbook had a 1600 x 900 traditional LCD panel with poor viewing angles, the 1920 x 1080 IPS display obliterates the issue. Not only can you view images and colors from almost any angle with only a slight loss of brightness, but it's one of the best displays I've seen on a laptop, period. Images are crisp, fonts look great, colors are vivid, and both whites and blacks are pure. Best of all, Asus manages all that with a matte screen that keeps reflections from disturbing your play and work. It's not perfect — in a dark room, with a dark image, I could see some backlight bleed around the edges of the screen — but the display is exceptional in just about every other way. If you're buying a Zenbook, make absolutely sure it has this "Full HD" screen, because the inferior 1600 x 900 panels are also a cheaper option.

In fact, I put the UX31A's 1080p panel head to head against the 2880 x 1800 Retina display (220ppi) in Apple's new MacBook Pro, and the 165ppi screen on the Zenbook actually comes respectably close. While fonts and images don't have quite the incredible level of detail as they do on Apple's machine (see images above), that matte coating doesn't hurt, and the Retina display actually seems to have a blueish-purple tint when compared to the clean whites of the Zenbook. It's worth noting that at the 1080p native resolution, icons can be quite small and hard to manage by default. You may want to manually set the DPI to 150 percent by tweaking the setting in the Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Display menu. You could also adjust the resolution to a lower setting, like the MacBook Pro with Retina display does by default, but the Zenbook's screen is crispest at native resolution, for sure.

It's simply an amazing IPS panel.

I'm looking to get a large-ish pretty good gaming laptop thats slightly future proof. This one is right around my price range (no more than $800) and everyone seems to say good things about Lenovo. What do you guys think? Should I bite?

First off, the GT 720M is a terrible card, as far as gaming is concerned. Second, your budget does not afford any future proofing. Can you possibly make the $850 to $900 range?

I guess I should be more clear, I'll be doing some light gaming with this laptop, nothing extensive though. I could probably go up to $900 though.

You should try to catch the Lenovo Y500 or Y510P on an $849 or $899 sale.

Even for light gaming, the 720M is mediocre.

After spending the last year with my Sony VAIO S15, I can't imagine ever going back to a crappy TN panel. IPS makes the entire computer using experience that much more pleasant.

Hello, I have a question. I am looking for a cheap laptop for some gaming. It doesn't need to have any fancy features or a lot of RAM or processing speed. I just need a laptop that has a good video card (Intel HD Graphics excluded). Any ideas? Games I would like to run on it smoothly include GTA IV. I live in the US.

I'd probably pay $300 extra without blinking, to get an IPS panel in a 17" gaming laptop.

Cheap is relative, and much more so is what qualifies as a "good" video card. It's only about how much are YOU willing to spend, maximum. We can't guess at it.

Since you specify the need to play GTA IV, you'll be wanting a quad core CPU, right?

Found this on Newegg.com:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834312834

What caught my attention:

Dual SLI 750m at 2x2GB GDDR5

Cheaper than buying it at Leveno website and customizing it.

I think I'm going to buy this laptop at the end of the month...I don't think I can find the same laptop with the same specs for that price anywhere else...I hope that it isn't sold out by the time I get the $$$ for it.
Yeah that is the best deal for SLI 750Ms. I wish you luck on it being there a month from now.

cross-posting from Notebook Review (though K Jack is already well aware of what I'm considering)

What is your budget?
$2,000

What country will you be buying this in?
US

What size notebook do you prefer?
Desktop Replacement (17-inch + screen)

What brands do you like or dislike?
Like: Gateway
Would you consider a refurbished laptop?
Maybe

What are the primary tasks you need this notebook for?
Web Surfing, Office and Productivity Software, Listening to Music, Video Chat and Conference, Movie Streaming and Viewing, Output Video to TV or Large Monitor, Casual Gaming, Graphic Intense 3D Gaming

I would like a nice full size keyboard, especially one where home/end are not FN functions

my favorite laptop I've owned had to be the Gateway FX line while the Asus ROG was a disappointment (though I did like it's keyboard) and I tried Sager but didn't like it overall due to some issues with the keyboard and sound being lackluster (which is why I'm returning it and looking at getting something else)

What games will you be playing?
Bioshock, Civ, Crysis, Fallout, Far Cry, Skyrim, The Witcher, and XCOM among others

Where will you be using this laptop?
Will be used different places and Will stay on desk

Around 08/19/2013

How long do you want this laptop to last?
3 years

How much storage capacity do you need?
1 TB+

Are you interested in SSD for storage?
No

I don't need a SSD because I already have a 512GB SSD I will be using as the main drive in a laptop, I would like to get one with a 1TB to then use as the secondary drive

Do you want a built-in optical drive, what type?
Blu-Ray

Also I would like one that has a Nvidia GeForce GTX 780M

I'm leaning towards this model at the moment - MSI GT70 2OD-064US - XOTIC PC - MSI Gaming Laptop but wanted to make this thread to see if there were any other suggestions or if any knew when Samsung's Gamer Series would have new models out with the Haswell processors and 700M line of graphic cards

Thanks in advance ^_^

edit: seriously considering an Alienware 17 if I can get them to customize one with 780M close to $2k, apparently you should be able to get one at $2200 starting and then there's a coupon to knock $100 off and according to multiple people Alienware is willing to haggle if you call them and lower the price further

<am I wish Samsung would drop a 780M model. And now you have me considering the Aliienware 17 along with the GT70.

Im looking to get a gaming laptop at the end of the year, I used to build a gaming desktop but havnt upgraded m one in a bout 4.5 years. Its a bit long in the tooth now (but sill plays most games on medium / high settings).

I dont get to much time to play games on the main TV theses days (have a son now etc etc) but I can squeeze in some time on m Vita and current laptop much more easily. I basically play LoL and a few indies on my laptop and bigger games on my desktop (which is hooked up to the TV) now and then when I get the chance.

Basically I want to get rid of the desktop and have a laptop that does it all instead as it would just suit my life better now. I would just plug it into the TV when I get the chance.

Im fine with most aspects of what im looking for but I don't know to much about how laptop graphic cards perform. I have always had ATI cards (well for a fair while now anyway) so I understand those a little better. However how do they perform compared to the desktop equivalents?

If I want it to last for a fair chunk of the next gen consoles life (don't care about ultra settings as time goes on. Still more than happy with medium settings on current gen PC games but would need to be able to do higher settings to start with for obvious reasons) would a HD 7870/7970 be enough or would I need to 8xxx series for that?

If I went with Nvidia am I right assuming I would need a GTX model? and if so would the 6xx line be enough or would I need higher?

I know if I was getting a desktop I would be fine with a HD7870 but I assume the laptop ones are less powerful.

Also for laptop brands I know MSI are meant to be good but are there any others I should look at?

Dont worry about things like battery life as its basically always plugged in.

Thanks if anyone can help me.

I paid premium price my my alienware and its a beast - but I don't use it really at all :/ was really a waste of money - 2 x 580's, 18" blah blah blah - at least my nephew uses it when it comes over.
