From PC Specalist so thinking it will arrive in a couple of weeks as they are not offically selling them until Thursday.

Where'd you hear that? I bought from them on the 22nd July and it shipped that week. I did pay for the quicker build time though

Oh ok I guess I misunderstood it said 8th Aug and I thought that was the release date maybe they went out of stock? Hmm it now says 20th August on the site I wonder what that means.

Im looking to get a gaming laptop at the end of the year, I used to build a gaming desktop but havnt upgraded m one in a bout 4.5 years. Its a bit long in the tooth now (but sill plays most games on medium / high settings).

I dont get to much time to play games on the main TV theses days (have a son now etc etc) but I can squeeze in some time on m Vita and current laptop much more easily. I basically play LoL and a few indies on my laptop and bigger games on my desktop (which is hooked up to the TV) now and then when I get the chance.

Basically I want to get rid of the desktop and have a laptop that does it all instead as it would just suit my life better now. I would just plug it into the TV when I get the chance.

Im fine with most aspects of what im looking for but I don't know to much about how laptop graphic cards perform. I have always had ATI cards (well for a fair while now anyway) so I understand those a little better. However how do they perform compared to the desktop equivalents?

If I want it to last for a fair chunk of the next gen consoles life (don't care about ultra settings as time goes on. Still more than happy with medium settings on current gen PC games but would need to be able to do higher settings to start with for obvious reasons) would a HD 7870/7970 be enough or would I need to 8xxx series for that?

If I went with Nvidia am I right assuming I would need a GTX model? and if so would the 6xx line be enough or would I need higher?

I know if I was getting a desktop I would be fine with a HD7870 but I assume the laptop ones are less powerful.

Also for laptop brands I know MSI are meant to be good but are there any others I should look at?

Dont worry about things like battery life as its basically always plugged in.

Thanks if anyone can help me.

All that matters is setting a budget then buying the strongest card you can afford. If something you're asking isn't in the OP, let me know.

So what do you guys think of the Lenovo Y500 with the sli GT 750? Really considering getting one.
The one on Newegg that's barely over $1k is a good buy. If I'm spending $1,200 of your money, I'd rather have a single GTX 765M.

What's everyone think of MSI's new GS70 they announced today?
My first thought wa: Can they keep it cool? The GE40 and GE60 are a little too hot. Maybe the 17" chassis will help.

Also, In the end $1699 minimum is a lot to ask for when all you're getting is a GTX 765M, in my opinion. But it beats the Razer Blade Pro by default, just because it lacks that ugly switchblade.

Any suggestions then for a $800-$1,200 budget?

I am looking for a 17 inch.

It will be for gaming and AutoCad/Photoshop. Design and weight are a priority, I am coming from a 9 pound Gateway FX.

My budget can approach $1500.

I think I'm going to pull the trigger one a new system, but I can't decide on which vendor to use.

I'm looking for 120GB SSD + 2nd HD of 500GB ^
Or if it's a good bit cheaper, I think I could go with just 240GB SSD

8gb ram
765M video or similar
and 15.1" screen, really don't like going up to 17", just too big

That said, I've been figuring in around $1289. If you guys are aware of somewhere that I can find a better price, give me some direction! Would love to drop under 1200, but I dunno.
I have a good desktop and I'm not looking to replace it, just want it to be more capable than my current notebook which isn't very snappy and I bought as a complete budget system.

Going to work out and hope someone is aware of a deal somewhere

9.9 pounds.

Sager NP7330? Wait for the Gigabyte P35K?

Sager NP7330. It's a 13" but the customization options and 1080p IPS alleviate some of that, I hope.

With the OS and SSD included, it ran just under a system (also Sager) that I put together on LPC-digital with a 15.6" screen.

Only reviews I can find about the place though all talk about some rep named Larry, which leads me to believe it isn't real, but if you can recommend, I might go there.
Will have 120gb Intel SSD and 750GB secondary

Whew, finally got my account accepted!

Anyways, I'd like your recommendation for a new laptop, GAF.

  • Location
Will be purchasing in the US.
  • Usage
I'm in need of a laptop for the upcoming semester. Looking for something that will play well with 3D applications such as Maya and Zbrush for 3D Animation/Modeling while also being able to game decently.
  • Games
I'd like to be able to run games such as FFXIV:ARR at HD resolution, Max, and 60fps. I also mainly play stuff such as SMITE or S4 League and the occasional indie game. No really heavy gaming intended for the laptop as I'm mainly a console gamer, the laptop is mostly for MMO gaming. Futureproofing it enough to be able to run things such as Dark Souls 2 on release or other games that may catch my eye decently would also be awesome. I can live with having to reduce visuals or live with lower framerate for most games, but I would really prefer otherwise for titles such as FFXIV.
  • Budget
Currently at $1400, but I can go as high as $1600, though $1400 or lower would be preferential.
  • Misc
I hear the Quadro line is perhaps what I'm looking for but I'm not sure of its gaming potential.

Thanks greatly for any help.

I find it pretty funny that this one has dual fans and the GX70 doesn't.

Went ahead and purchased the Sager NP7352 with:
15.6" Display (1080p)
Intel i7-4700MQ Processor (2.40GHz-T3.4GHz)
120GB Intel SSD
750GB Secondary HDD
Nvidia GeForce GTX 765M GPU with 2GB GDDR5 Video Memory

Rolls in at $1289. Should hopefully be able to sell my old system for around $200. This should really hold over my notebook needs for quite a while if there's no problems. I've always bought entry level basic systems up to this point.

So, this is kind of off topic, but my wife needs a new laptop with a 15.6 inch screen, and she will use it for the standard stuff.. internet, watching videos, and occasionally typing up a word document. What's the best value laptop out there these days for a casual user?

Size/weight doesn't matter, value and build quality are my #1 priorities. Gaming is all I will do on this. Also based on the FP of this topic it seems like the 780 is a pretty good jump from the 770. My budget is around 2k. Based on the best bang for my buck seems to be this fangbook with a price of $1855 (shipped). I couldn't find a better option, but if you think I could get a better value elsewhere let me know.

I'd estimate in the $300-$400 range depending on what you'll exactly use said laptop for in the future. I found a really nice Gateway hovering at $361, although you can check the usual local electronic stores like Fry's for the same model and find it for cheaper. Found this one with an i3 unlike the rest of the majority which largely consist of AMDs E Series APUs. I'm honestly not sure about recommending one or not due to me currently using a laptop with an E-240 at 1.5Ghz and it is not the greatest for things such as HQ youtube playback or loads due to multiple tabs with the addition of video playback. Granted, it is a single core though. Most of the other lower priced laptops I'm looking at have various negatives that range from low RAM/SDRAM to worse processors than mine. The upper $300s are where you'll usually start finding decently solid specs.

Other people may have other recommendations though, that's just my two cents. Good luck on finding a laptop for the missus.

I purchased the asus g750 for right around your budget. Plays everything great! Just DON'T get the bestbuy model if you get it. That version is cheaper by about $200 BUT it's gimped.

Any thought on Lenovo Idea Pad z500 as a multimedia machine?

Most rankings I see has Lenovo ranked right after Apple.

GT60 or GT70. The GTX 770M is at the top of your budget and will last you quite a while.

Find an ASUS that falls in your budget. The 2 years of warranty they include on all machines is a huge value, especially with budget laptops.

Thank you, but I think I'll look into the MSI GT series due to offering a similar price point as the Asus with a better GPU (765vs770). I appreciate the help though.

GT60 or GT70. The GTX 770M is at the top of your budget and will last you quite a while.

I see the GT60 is a 15inch while the GT70 is 17in. As far as I can see, they have extremely similar stock specs on the xotic pages you linked. Is there honestly no price difference between the 15 and the 17? And thank you for the recommendations.

EDIT: Also browsing the site, I found this Sager laptop, the NP8225, that also contained a similar processor and the GTX770M as well running at $1219/$1182. Is there any considerable advantages the MSI has over the Sager?

The NP8235 is indeed a cheaper alternative, and I mean that in every sense. The Clevo/Sager line is all about high-end internal components, but with lower quality chassis and features, to keep the price down.

Just doing a 'versus', with the Sager you get:

1. No backlit keyboard. Important to many, but not all.
2. Speaking of the keyboard, MSI uses high quality SteelSeeries keyboards, spoken of as the best typing keys of any gaming laptop. You also may want to look at the Sager's key layout, as there have been some gripes voiced to me.
3. Far, FAR worse speakers. MSI has the best (Dynaudio) speakers of any laptop, while Sager floats around average.
4. MSI laptops come with a standard 2 years of warranty, while that's a $79 upgrade for a Sager.

So I dunno, it really comes down to your priorities. I'm not trying to sell you an MSI, but it's important for me that I make it clear, that Sager is the value line of gaming laptops. Expect no amenities.

By the way guys, I'm considering getting the 13" Macbook Pro, I know its horribly bad for gaming, but should any of you happen to know how the 2.9 Ghz one runs emulators?

Interested in Pcsx2 and Dolphin performance on it.

I can't say I've heard, but 2.9Ghz should be enough for decent performance.

If in the future I wanted to upgrade my CPU/GPU, is there a site I can compare my current tech to make a cost-benefit analysis?
You have an ASUS, yes? I don't think the option to upgrade is even available to you.

What's the best 17 inch laptop under 1,400.
For movies and regular stuff. Don't need 3D or gaming.
Also want it to be 1080p :)

Edit: I'm considering this one, anyone think of something better than this? remember, its not for gaming :)

Man. My sister is looking for a decent laptop for college, and she wants it to be at least somewhat gaming capable. Kicking myself for missing this:

Although, you can still get the base model at $789 which is the standard craptacular 1366x768 screen, and no caching 24GB SSD (and it appears the slot is the new NGFF/ m.2 'standard', which is near impossible to find on the market).

Still tempting at that price for the base. At $930 for the one in the Slickdeals post, I think that's too much for the upgrades, as I'm not sure if she'll even notice the lower res screen.

If anyone else has any ideas at an under $1k price point for low to mid-tier gaming and non-atrocious battery life in the 14-15" range, I'd gladly take any recommendations. I'll probably wait until tomorrow's deals appear, but this is MA tax free weekend which is a great time to buy.

I'm looking for a decent laptop in the $400 to $500 range for my girlfriend. She wants to use it mainly for school but she does play games on it. I'm looking for something that can play some indie games, The sims, civilization 5, and some other shooters.

I'm not looking to max out any games of course but I'm just lost looking at laptop specs.

The Sager NP7352, is a Clevo and the specs are :
CPU: i7-4700
GPU: GTX 765m

Storage: 750GB 7200RPM
Optical drive: DVD 8x

The lowest I have found this laptop was $988.

Is Alienware really out pricing everyone on SLI laptops? From what I've seen, it looks to be the case. I think Xoticpc has Sagers with the same hardware for $200 cheaper. But it doesn't have an 18'' screen or all the other little cool things and warranty that comes with it. I hate giving Dell credit, but it looks like they have the super high-end laptops on the lockdown.

Waiting for that sale again makes sense. It isn't going to be beat at sub-$800.

This is the best laptop you'll get for $500, but I strongly recommend you spend $580 on this.

Clevo is firmly in the "budget gaming laptop" segment now. they simply aren't building luxury items. I recommend that anyone who can spend a little bit more should go with Alienware or MSI. Price isn't as important as quality and satisfaction.

Which one? I want a 17 screen size, 1080p, its for casual internet, and movies.
I "might" game on it, but games that don't require a huge graphics card and stuff. Already build a desktop for those games.

Significantly stronger CPU than the one I listed, but I can't find any tests for the integrated GPU. Notebookcheck claims it should be faster than the 7670M, but there's no benchmarks to back it up. If it is indeed faster, that is clearly a superior buy.

Just looking as far as build quality, the Envy wins by a landslide, as they're well crafted and not made out of cheap plastic. The Acer's big wins are in the faster GPU, and the SSD. I'm baffled as to why HP doesn't offer SSDs on their premium laptops.

If I were choosing, I'd go with the Envy. Other bonuses are that It's speakers will simply embarrass the Acer's, and it comes with 2 years of warranty as standard.

Well it looks like my PC is dead. So instead getting a new PC I'm considering a laptop for gaming and work. I'm looking at this one -

Any opinions and advice would be appreciated.

That's a pretty good notebook, especially around that price.
