Finally ordered a P370SM, w/ 2 Crucial M500s, but now reading that speed-wise they are supposedly not very good. Should I swap them for another SSD while I still can?

Would anybody recommend the MSI GS70?

If you're looking for a thin and lightweight gaming laptop, then yes as it's $1k cheaper than the Razor equivalent. Though if you're looking for mainly heavy gaming and don't care about heavier laptops, then you can get much better spec-wise machines at that price point. Keep in mind that the Stealth also has a nice 2x 128GB mSATA Drives in RAID + 1TB 5400RPM Hard Drive setup which is a main factor in its price.

The 14" Razer has one of the worst screens in existence. I recommend avoiding that machine.

You wouldn't notice any difference, between one decent SSD and another. Just buy the one which has the best GB per $ ratio.

So after much thought I decided to just jump in and got this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834312834

I really wanted something around 14" and lighter, and since I already have a good gaming desktop, cheaper. But I wanted at least a 1080p screen which the Y410P and MSI GE40 lacked. I also looked at the Clevo 230st but I really prefer the peace of mind of having an actual manufacturer's warranty, instead of having to deal with a reseller. I'm sure they might be fine, but I'd rather have a little more peace of mind. Plus it's possible to get Optimus tech on the Y510p now, even though it's not official, it seems to work perfectly fine. I was keen on getting a good ultrabook for a while, but the prices for the decently specced models was a huge turnoff. So I said fuck it and bit the bullet on that Y510p. The one thing I am kind of worried about is the huge power brick, but I guess I'll deal with that when the time comes.

My M11x R1 served it's purpose, but it's time to retire this baby. I'll post more impressions when I get the machine sometime this week. <3 shoprunner free 2day.

Trying to find a good laptop for my friend - his maximum budget is $800.

Country where it will be purchased.

United States

Maximum budget.

$800

Max size (can be in screen inches, dimensions, weight).

Doesn't really matter, as long as it isn't as big as a desktop replacement or something - needs to be portable.

Planned usage (what kind of games or specific games it must run, if heavily gaming at all). Ideally you'll point out what resolution and settings are your standard, based off of what I've laid out in the OP.

He wants to play Steam games on it and use it for work. The most intensive Steam game he'll play is probably the Medieval II: Total Warfare. He's not into League of Legends, but if it can play something like that then I'll think it would be fine. So whatever is more intensive - Total Warfare or League of Legends - that's probably the most intensive games he would play as far as computer requirements.

Whatever else you find relevant, misc. things such as desired battery life, screen resolution, fan noise, etc.

Reasonable battery life since he would be using it for work and I just want to recommend one to him that is, above all, reliable. Something that won't easily overheat, or crash. A reliable brand. He'd like a laptop with at least an i3 as well.

Thanks in advance for everyone's suggestions!

Would anybody recommend the MSI GS70?

I received mine yesterday and am pretty stoked about it. I'll be working away from the office for a week each month and needed something that can power photoshop, maya, and games but still be portable, so I jumped on the GS70.

Disclaimer - I haven't had a decent laptop for about four years. My last one was an early Asus gaming rig that died like two days after the 2 year warranty expired. It was great while it lasted though.

Pros:
+ super quality build. It feels really really solid for something so thin and a lot of thought went into everything from the packaging to the bottom surface to the "all the shit in this laptop stickers" (which are on a pull-away piece of plastic.)

+ awesome screen - great anti-glare screen with excellent color and no noticeable light bleed. Viewing angle is fine if not super amazing. It's a good "movie in bed" kinda laptop

+ super thin and light for the size and power. You really expect it to weigh more every time you pick it up!

+ SSd and 16gigs of ram standard.

+ 2 year standard warranty. I bought it with an amex so I get an extra year on the warranty from them.

+ Nice sound. A 2.1 system with a built in subwoofer that you can feel in your palms.

+ Played Dishonored with it on my lap for a few hours and it got warm but not uncomfortably so

Cons:

- I forgot how big 17inch laptops are! It has a sizeable footprint and barely fits in my backpack. So it's kinda strange how portable it is in some regards and how bulky in others. Still amazing for a 17incher though.

- The keyboard is awesome except that the arrow keys are strangely smushed in with other keys. While I'll get used to it, I was editing a bunch of google docs and kept hitting Delete instead of Down arrow because they are right next to each other.

- I've only played Dishonored on it, and with no overclocking the GPU or CPU, it performed okay but not outstandingly. At 1080p the framerate would dip below 30 if AA was on. With AA off, it was very playable just not as fast as I had hoped (but it was my first time playing Dishonored, so I haven't run it on my desktop for comparison.)

- Battery life isn't great, but that's the norm for gaming laptops. I ran it out of battery in a little over 3 hours last night mainly browsing, streaming music, and downloading from Steam.

- $1699 to $1899 is still a lot to drop on a laptop. I had off-and-on buyer's remorse until I sat down with it for good last night. Now I'm excited to have this be my main computer at home and work!

---------------

So yeah, I'd recommend it if you want a big, light, well-designed gaming laptop, but know what you're getting into!

A quick question concerning laptop monitors. The MSI-GT70 2OC that I'm purchasing comes with a standard FHD matte screen, but I have the option to upgrading to a "17.3" FHD 16:9 "Glare Type" Super Clear Ultra Bright LED Glossy Screen w/ 72% NTSC Color Gamut (1920x1080)" for $39 more.

As someone who will be doing a lot of potential digital art and would prefer solid colors and values and also for gaming, which type of screen would be best, glossy or matte?

That's my beef with the GS70; you spend nearly $2k, is you spend nearly two thousand USD, yet you only net a GTX 765M.

That just isn't enough for the money, imo. And they only try to justify the price with the thinness.

This is best.

Reflections are annoying.

So I finally went ahead and bought an MSI GT70 (barebones):

4th Generation Intel® Haswell Core™ i7-4700MQ (2.4GHz - 3.4GHz)
NVIDIA® GeForce™ GTX 780M
8GB DDR3 1866MHz Kingston (2x4GB)
120GB Samsung 840 SSD + 750GB 7200RPM

And some other bits and pieces ($75 off in the 'Summer Sale', free dead pixel guarantee, free thermal paste...). Went with the glossy screen, because I like 'em and there's no problem lighting in the room I'll mainly use it in.

Should be here in a few weeks. My palms are itching.

Hi
I'm over in the US for work for a few weeks, and have been tempted to pick up a decent gaming laptop while im over here.
Assuming it works out cheaper than home!
I have a 2009 macbook pro that I will probably sell when I get back to England.

Country where purchase: USA
Max Budget: $800-900
Max Size: 15inch (smaller is fine)
Games: BF3, Skyrim, Dota. Medium high solid frame rate

Here til first week of Sept so any build/delivery time.

Also, im in Texas atm, so will I be charged state tax if I order a laptop online?

I know there are places here you can get it refunded if you’re a visitor, but I think the purchase must be made within the state.

Hi I'm going to be doing a fair bit of travelling over the next year or so and would like a laptop to take with me.

Country where it will be purchased.

U.K

Maximum budget.

something around £600-£700 would be nice could stretch to £800 if needed

Max size (can be in screen inches, dimensions, weight).

14" screen or less would be great

Planned usage (what kind of games or specific games it must run, if heavily gaming at all). Ideally you'll point out what resolution and settings are your standard, based off of what I've laid out in the OP.

Basically I play Football Manager a lot so being able to run that would be great, being able to play the rest of my steam library (borderlands 2, witcher 2 probably my most played) would be a bonus doesn't need to be at an uber resolution just not look horrible

Whatever else you find relevant, misc. things such as desired battery life, screen resolution, fan noise, etc.

I think I would like a smallish SSD to run the OS from and then a larger 1-2TB HDD for storage I think this is possible. I've been looking at something like this as a base but no idea if its a good fit http://pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/SkyFireIII-14/ any help really appreciated.

I recommend that laptop.
Thats a bit more than i want to pay tbh.

What about the $829 Y410p below?

Or this one on newegg?

How do you compare the £708.00 price of this laptop back in the UK, to those in USD? Its GTX 760M is a significantly faster GPU than either the GTX 660M or GT 750M, which makes me want to recommend it over them.

Its pricey for me cos the Y410p for example would work out as £530 which is kind of the budget im working with. I'm thinking if i can get a good deal in the US then i would save on the tax which is an additional saving.

Would the GT 750m be good for gaming on medium settings on say Skyrim?

I see.

As far as Skyrim, I'll be surprised if the 750M can't run it on High, easily.

There's something wrong with Lenovo's site, and it won't let me view the Y410P link. Does it have a quad core?

Yup I think its a quad core.

Thanks, I might give them a call tomorrow to check availability.

Hey! I figured I would ask here because it's semi on topic. My girlfriend is needing a new laptop, not for gaming but one that will perform well with Adobe creative suite (photoshop, InDesign etc.).

Anyone have recommendations for such a laptop in the $700 to 800$ range?

I was going to hold out getting a new laptop for a little bit but with everyone praising Gone Home and a new Amnesia next month, I think now is the right time to finally get something decent.

Country where it will be purchased.
UK

Maximum budget.
About £600 but I'm willing to stretch a bit if something grabs my eye.

Max size (can be in screen inches, dimensions, weight).
15"+ preferably, I don't mind it being a bit on the bulky side.

Planned usage
Indie stuff mainly. I plan on playing a majority of the bigger, AAA games on consoles so that's not much of a concern. It would be nice to play Skyrim on, at least, medium settings, though.

Whatever else you find relevant,
The bigger the resolution, the better. I liked the look of that Ideapad posted above but I can't find anywhere selling it in the UK .

I wonder what the chances are of a GS60 (15.6") version of this. Would probably be sub-5lbs and I'd be very, very tempted.

Quick question, is there much of a difference performance wise between the i7-3630QM and the i7-4700QM. I want to save some money and the former is less expensive on most retail sites

I just bought this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834198030) for $1369

CyberPower HX7-100
•Intel Core i7 4700MQ(2.40GHz)
•8GB Memory 750GB HDD
•NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770M
•1920 x 1080
•Windows 8 64-Bit
•8x DVDRW Super Multi DRIVE

It was probably the cheapest laptop I could find with a 770M in it. I'm planning on keeping this laptop for awhile since I rarely game at above 720p anyway. It might seem overkill to some, but I want to make sure I can run games on this setup for the next 3-4 years at most.

So I've been wanting a laptop for work stuff and to play some games on the side - nothing particularly demanding, mostly Dota 2 and some lower end indie games. I really don't want to go over $800 as I'm on something of a tight budget heading into my third year of college. I've been eyeing this Acer (I know, some people the hate brand) but it seems like an alright deal for the price. Thoughts on it? I know the resolution is crappy but 1366 x 768 seems like the standard for anything sub $1000. Really just want to know if this would be able to handle what I need it to play.

Edit: I suppose I should post the specs:
-2.3 GHz A-Series Quad-Core A10-4600M
-6 GB DDR3
-750 GB SATA
-AMD Radeon HD 7660G + 7670M Dual Graphics

Thats a good spec. Cyperpower I think are a Clevo / Sager resellers. Much like PC Specialist in the UK. I got myself one like yours but has a 765m instead.

So Schenker is informing me that due to supply problems with the 780M cards for the P37xSM models, they wouldn't be able to fulfill my order until early October. That is definitely too long to wait for me, so now I am considering a 8970M Crossfire configuration. But have two questions regarding this -

1) How likely is it that come next summer I will be able to upgrade to a GeForce 8xxM SLI? Since it will be a bigger generational jump than this time, is there a chance that the compatibility will change?

2) Are there any benchmarks of the 8970M Crossfire available? I cannot find any at all. Have also heard bad things about ATI's SLI technology being much more prone to microstuttering and other problems...

So basically wondering if this is worth it. Any advice?

Is this concerning the earlier mentioned P370SM you were purchasing? If so, I'd recommend upgrading to the P375SM model as it uses an upgraded cooling system which is crucial with an SLI/Crossfire setup. I've honestly also also heard bad things about ATI's SLI setups, although I believe I remember hearing they've recently began to seriously address the issues. Although with ATI's legendary drivers, who knows? Dual 8970Ms give you as much performance as an SLI setup using dual 680ms, I don't think it's worth it if you were going to get dual 780m SLI.

Here's something you can use to approximate the frame rates in various games for the SLI and Crossfire Setups.

So I've been wanting a laptop for work stuff and to play some games on the side - nothing particularly demanding, mostly Dota 2 and some lower end indie games. A Crossfire setup isn't really needed for the type of gaming you're looking for. You can also aim for the better performing standalone 730m/740m from Nvidia which also do not have the potential to microstutter. You probably won't be able to run Dota 2 at Ultra 1080p, but that doesn't seem to be a problem in your case. Here are two options I found while digging around that may interest you:

$699 MSI C-Series (1 left in stock?)
$649 Toshiba Satellite

If you really prefer your Acer price point though, I'd warn you that AMDs APUs usually have bottlenecks even if the Processor/GPU seems really good. A 550M or above tier cards are preferential.

EDIT: As another option, if you don't mind turning the graphics down a bit to medium or so on Dota 2, you can even aim for the HD4000.

$467 Lenovo G500
$479 Acer E1-571
$549 Lenovo G700

Schenker only offers the P370SM model and states that there are no cooling problems. Given that they are the biggest and most reputable Clevo reseller in Germany I'd tend to trust them on that...

The one advantage on the dual 8970s is that it makes the whole thing cheaper by almost 600 bucks or so. Given that this year's generational leap was smaller anyway and next year's one will be far more significant - and that I am actually upgrading from a 2 year old Macbook Air with which I can play literally nothing - I am starting to think this might actually be a good deal *as long as* I could upgrade to 8xx SLI next year.

Thanks for the link, but their entry on the 8970M Crossfire is of course, empty too. :/ Not sure why nobody has benchmarks on it?

No worries, I only meant it as something to look into if it was a concern of yours.

As for the Dual Crossfire, if you're well aware of the potential problems then I say go for it. It has identical performance to an SLI 680m which has some benchmarks in the link in my previous post which gives you a good estimate of its gaming ability. I cant answer concerning the potential of upgrading to the 8xx series, maybe someone with more info will be able to.

Good luck!

Simple question. Which one should I get? I want to play DOTA 2 native screen res on high at 60fps.

With a coupon code I can get it with a 740m for $849 https://m.hpdirect.com/hp/product/d...252&siteid=dZCX6Je2w8Q-fZC35ueSBcrUvQppTP2j2w

Or this one with a 765m for $988

If anyone has better suggestions my limit is 1.1k,but would really prefer to stay under that.
I just got a Sager with the 765m and it just pulls in 60fps with Dota2 @ 1080p and all high settings. Not changing the rendering quality.

How's this look? The GT 740M will get you medium settings in most games.

Quick question, is there much of a difference performance wise between the i7-3630QM and the i7-4700QM. I want to save some money and the former is less expensive on most retail sites
Not enough of a difference to be worth a huge premium, assuming they're paired with the same GPU.

Take this instead.

Probably because the 8970M and 7970M are identical, so year old tests of the latter speak for both.

You want the 765M, no doubt.

Anyone have the new Alienware 14" How is it? Is it heavy and bulky?

I like the MSI GS70, but I would really prefer a 14-15" laptop, and I've only heard good things about the Alienware.

It's a large 14", for sure, at 1.6" thick and 6 pounds. But you have to expect weight with the magnesium alloy chassis. It's no cheap plastic toy, and that's a good thing.

The Verge has a good review up, They sold me on it, but I'm in the waiting line for the Alienware 17.

I got my CyberPowerPC fangbook last night. It is so crazy what going from a 5400 disk drive to a new ssd does for the performance. I don't understand going with a 5400 as a boot disk if you have a decent budget at all. At least go with a 7200.

Anyway so far I'm pleased, I'm not sure I needed the 17" screen, but it is sure nice to have a screen that size. I'll continue to report back as I make additional upgrades and to report on durability. If you have any questions just let me know.

One thing I do like is there is a keyboard area control to turn the fans on "turbo", seems like an easy option to kick on when you feel it getting to warm.

According to the MSI rep on the NBR forums we should stay tuned for information on a GS60. I'm guessing it would boast similar specs to the Alienware 14 but with a 15.6" screen sub-5lbs and significantly less than an inch thick. No info as to when though (GAHHH).

Too bad it wasn't coming in the next month.

Lots! Tomb Raider, Borderlands 2, TF2, Blops 2, Final Fantasy 14 ARR, Skyrim, Bioshock infinite. BF3 etc etc Everything pretty much runs on high no problems

Sweet, kind of surprised actually. Dota 2 only pulls 60fps so I wasn't sure how more graphically intense games would do.

My desktop with just a MSI 660 doubles up on Dota 2 at 120fps+, so I was having some doubts about bothering to install other games.

Thinking about buying a laptop. Problem is: I'd need win 7 (x64) on it and now every laptop seems to come win 8. (Because I'm not sure about adobe CS4 suite compatibility with win8 and I can't really risk on it since I don't have the money to upgrade to newer versions).

I'd like of course to avoid buying outdated (hardware-wise) models which naturally have win7.
And I'd avoid "obscure" brands because I'd like a reliable europen-wide warranty service.

My budget would be 600-700€ (could eventually stretch to 800) - Italy here.

What to do? Maybe some brands ship laptops with win 8 preinstalled but with the optional inclusion of a win 7 dvd?

Thanks

I realize I got recommendations and I never got a chance to thank the people who responded, but I've continued looking since the price was somewhat high for me. $1000 dollars was the maximum I could spend, but I preferred lower. Sorry of that was unclear.

I found this laptop and it seems to be pretty good at a cheap price. Can anyone tell me if there's anything wrong with it? Will it make a good gaming laptop?

Also, a friend of mine is also looking for a laptop

 • Country: US
 • Usage: Movies mostly
 • Budget: $1000 - $1500
 • Misc: She wants it to be very responsive, she wants a long battery life, lightweight, and a 500GB harddrive

Yeah just dropping some questions here. As I'm not to tech savvy I wondering if this laptop is good and what games I can possibly play. the specs are
CPU: Intel core i7 3635qm
VRAM: AMD HD 8770M
MEMORY: 8GB GDDR3

I'm enjoying it so far but of course it get's a bit hot. I bought a fan but I'm not satisfied with it. Are there any laptop coolers you guys recommend?

Thanks fellas and I'm sorry if I'm coming off as kinda dumb!
