I remember Sciz from SonicGAF telling the tale of one of the Archie Sonic writers named Ken Penders basically going off the rails and making all kinds of Knuckles lore as well as general off-the-wall plots like Robotnik being killed. Fans hated it but he gave zero fucks and went on a world-building spree until he finally got the boot and they rebooted the comic to retcon everything he had done, more or less. Here's a couple of quotes from Sciz about it:
There was virtually no oversight or quality control from Sega or Archie's editorial staff during his run, so there's a whole lot of crazy going on in the main series over the course of over a hundred issues as it progressively kills Robotnik, introduces a bunch of characters to fill the void left by his absence, brings Robotnik back, does a crappy SA1 adaptation, spends a whole lot of time getting bogged down with family drama and romantic tension, and generally fucks around. A whole bunch of long-running plot threads get set up in this period, none of which would ever be resolved satisfactorily as the writers had no idea where they were going with any of it and didn't really talk to each other. Some people consider the story where they killed Robotnik to be the series' high water mark. Those people are crazy. The comic begins to develop its reputation for being awful in the time after that story, especially once it starts pandering directly to shippers. It is also commonly ugly, as only a handful of the regular artists have an appealing art style, or any idea how to draw Sonic in the first place.

By the end of all that (in 2006, no less), the comic's sales were suffering so much that the people at Archie who were supposed to be keeping an eye on this stuff woke up and sacked basically all of the creative team, improving the series tenfold overnight in the eyes of everyone but some diehard echidna fans, who would go on to whine incessantly about how they didn't get enough attention until the lawsuit forced them to be written out entirely years later, followed promptly by a full reboot.

Ol' dude hasn't given up though, and is making a comic series about echidnas that totally aren't the same echidnas as Knuckles but look almost exactly like them anyways. I won't link images of his "work," so you're just going to have to see the horror for yourself.

Damn. Now I know I need to get back on this shit. Usually I'm the one coming in to explain Archie Sonic. Or is that from Universe? Never really fucked with Universe.

Anyway, is that "killed Robotnik" thing from issue 50? That was a big deal back in the day. Honestly I kinda liked the change of pace afterwards. Felt like they were at least trying new things. I don't think it really went to shit until a while after that, like somewhere in the 100s (we're at 287 now).

Hell, I was even fine with the Echidna stuff. Okay, it ripped off a lot of shit visually, but It got shockingly deep at times. I think we've been over it before.

Archie Comics vs Penders

After declaring that he would "use every legal means at my disposal to protect and preserve" his works, Archie Comics subsequently filed a lawsuit against Penders in the fall of 2010 in an attempt to retain their copyright holdings of his characters and concepts. In the fall of 2012, Archie Comics fired its legal team and replaced it. Following this and a court settlement many characters created by Penders abruptly ceased to appear in the comics.

The Lara-Su Chronicles

In December 2011, Penders announced plans to utilize Echidna characters he created for the Archie comics in a graphic novel series entitled The Lara-Su Chronicles. Said series is planned to feature Lara-Su, one of his original characters created during his work at Archie, as its protagonist.On March 5, 2014, Penders announced on his Twitter account that his characters were no longer echidna but Echyd'nya, an alien species. Penders stated reasons for the change was that he needed to make some adjustments to broaden the audience while making certain longtime fans get answers and resolution and because of the difficulty he has seen with people pronouncing the word echidna.
