The E3 '08 Sony Prediction and Discussion Thread

I know can predict tears for SONY at their conference, bitter tears.

but don't worry, Sony have something up their sleeve and yes like the FFXIII exclusive, it will also be an illusion.

time for sony to do a nintendo and announce a ram expansion pack since they just lost their square exclusives and have just released rumble for their controller. oh and a ps3dd while they are at it. maybe a virtualpsp in full 3d but only displays in one colour (probably brown)to top things off.

PS3 is the new nintendo64

no ps3 is the new saturn!

Seriously.

They've gotta at least us throw us PS3 jRPG fans a bone. I'm not even talking about being butthurt about losing FFXIII exclusivity. I just wanna get at least ONE freakin' decent jRPG on the PS3 this year.

Valkyria looks cool on all, but I've always preferred jRPG's with the classical turn based combat.

Yea I still do not know why it is so hard for this to happen.

lol that's exactly what i was thinking. the lulz have been epic. over on fanboyforum.com people are cancelling netflix subscriptions and giving gaming altogether. e3 delivers with one announcement!

What could they possibly show that will make them bounce back from this? I can't think of anything.

I honestly wonder if GTAIV had a hand in this. There's a major, MAJOR franchise that, for the first time, would release simultaneously on both platforms. MS paid $50 million for that privilege, and guess what...NO impact on hardware sales.

I'm sure Square put the pricetag on the exclusive, and Sony didn't see it viable enough to go for it.

says who?

Square stated at their press conference they won't even start the 360 version until the PS3 version is released in Japan, and the PS3 version won't be released outside of Japan until the 360 version is done.

2012 release outside of Japan confirmed?

They really should just change the name to Disappointmentstation 3. I've sat and put up with Sony enough. Still bought it despite the 500 price tag. Stuck with it despite no real compelling games at the beginning of its life cycle. Stuck with it when 'once exclusives' like DMC and Assassins Creed released on the same time as the 360.

They've lost virtually every big 3rd party exclusive except MGS4, and I'm pretty sure that, as well as Tekken, will be headed towards 360 eventually. In their stead, we get awesome 3rd party exclusives such as Genji and Lair. Oh yeah, great use of cash in developing a garden simulator and a tech demo with a flying dog Sony! Awesome business moves Sony... and we're still getting delayed ports which are either inferior or barely superior over a year into the PS3's lifecycle. Delaystation 3! This is incompetence!

The hilarious part is that everyone expected some sort of fancy motion controller, and we all said the Nintendo announcement trounced the MS controller, which did not even appear. Hilarious.

What Sony could unveil to win back a competitive market perception after today's bombs dropped:

-Final Fantasy VII Remake exclusive
-God of War 3 announced, scheduled for 2009
-New Kojima Productions IP exclusive
-ThrICO
-GT5 demonstration with car damage, functional online with stable netcode and the actual ability to play with friends
-Virtual orgies in Home
-Wii emulator

What Sony will actually unveil:

-New Afrika trailer.

Sony is absolutely retarded if they don't think this will have an impact on hardware sales, but hey, it still plays Blu-Rays guys!

Incorrect. They said they wont start working on the 360 until the US localization of the game is done. In other words, finish it on PS3 in Japan and US and EU, then do a straight port of a finished product.

Which is how the 360 version will be released simultaneously in US/EU, as the localizations will be finished. But not the same day as on the PS3 versions.

Seriously, this is the series that has been so pivotal for the Playstation brand for so long. Does Sony just not even care anymore?

Dunno why there so much panic too me M$ just showed what everybody knew the fables gears re5 FF13 is one game now multi...Sony will just show off new IPS PSN the Video store bridge the PS1 / PS2 downloads...and maybe HOME will come out sooner than we think.

Im not worried even tho M$ did surprise me companys always have ways to counteract a companys stratergy and im sure SONY have some trump cards up there sleeves

Is it so hard to bring a Japanese RPG to the PS3?
I really don't get it. And what's SCEI doing? Sleeping?

Sony is only cancelling games like The Getaway. People are leaving.
What's wrong with SONY?

Beginning of the end?
Just wait till tomorrow. But if Sony doesn't come with a counter announcement, they're doomed.

That's not an analogous case, though. MS advanced (not paid) Rockstar $50 million for DLC coming "some time down the road". The analogous case is the sales boost that Sony will have to show in June for MGS4 exclusively on their platform.

Fingers crossed for Sony tomorrow. They just got to the point with XMB and Trophies that they were close to what Microsoft had at the launch of the 360, and now Microsoft is completely revamping their interface and adding Miis.

Sony has to put pressure on if they ever want to do anything more than play catch up on anything other than Blu-Ray movie playback.

40GB PS3 at $299 would do it, but it'll never happen.

Nowhere that bad (would be if they completely lost FFXIII like Toshiba lost Warner) but it does put them in an awkward position as far as their presentation goes - especially if they didn't know about this beforehand.

I still hope they will show a new FFXIII trailer and give a PS3 release date. That and announce ZoE3. Those 3 things would restore my faith in the PS3.

I do wana see some more on Killzone 2 and INfamous.

So you wouldn't expect more after spending half a grand on a videogame machine? Yeah, let's just lower our expectations more after dealing with constant disappointment from Sony this generation.

These are some of the bigger exclusives that Sony either lost full or time exclusivity on:

DMC4
Star Ocean
Final Fantasy 13
GTA 4
Dragon Quest 9

and this is no big deal to you?

Not tomorrow, it won't. They'd have to have done like Microsoft and got the word out into the channel for a price cut stat, or else announcing it at E3 will kill sales.

Sony needs to keep cost reducing the PS3, and an announcement of a PS3 slim(er) would go great, but I can't imagine how they'd be able to keep that a secret.

Jesus christ at the people thinking SONY are doomed because of this. It is a huge kick in the balls but you are exageratting a bit guys. Personally i don't care, never liked RPG's so this makes no difference to me.

Oh, they absolutely knew beforehand. You better believe Square took this to Sony to see what they'd do about it. Apparently, nothing. :p

I think marketing plays big role. If MS let go FF13 release like GTA IV, nothing will change.

Oh, I was just talking in general in response to your last sentence.

But yes, Sony is screwed for tomorrow, but I'm okay with that. I've grown to love all platforms because I just love games. :D

I'd hope so, for Sony's conference sake. It would be pretty bad if they had FFXIII planned prominently on their conference for example.

Both of those game have had minimal impact on hardware sales, if any. DQ is a tossup as it's on a totally different platform. So, I'm not exactly understanding your point.

if sony doesn't deliver tomorrow... i'm jumping ship.
if they deliver tomorrow, i'll forgive them for letting ffxiii exclusive rights slip through their hands.

didnt even know they had a conference, thanks for the info. except, wait, so no ps3 version in US until 360 is done??? thats ridiculous. what happened to simultaneous release?

nevermind, i see that you were corrected.

From IGN's Live Blog (others say the same thing)

1:01 - They are "ready to start" developing FF XIII. So first they will complete the PS3 version in Japan, then start a localization for the US and Europe while they start development on the 360 version.

1:03 - The PS3 and the 360 versions will be released simultaneously in the US and Europe, but not Japan.

I'm not really sure what Sony can do tomorrow to make some waves. MS has stolen E3 so far, they have their biggest remaining game on their system now and Netflix announcement is big.

A lot of the updates to the 360 seem to mirror a lot of Home's features(from a gaming perspective).

Barring some super secret awesome/ground-breaking games that they've been hiding the only thing I can think of is to bring back PS2 BC.

Stop positioning the PS3 as some high-end device/Blu-Ray player and instead start to position it as the PS2 successor by making it compatible. Better late than never.

I look forward to tomorrow with high hopes and low expectations.

Is this Sony's plan this gen? To do nothing. I just hope not.

Other than the FFXIII announcement, did any of the predictable haters in this thread actually see the embarrassment that was Microsoft's conference?

A toaster peripheral could make up the entirety of Sony's conference and people would walk away with the same impact.

I know we ps3 owners are feeling a bit down... I cheered my self up by listening to the reassuring words of Chaz Warden, anyway. I feel Sony is going to have a big day ahead of them.:D

I think they will always be behind in some of the features, and they always can have being a free service as an excuse. In case of X360 interface revamp, I think PS3 already has that kind of clean look going on with XMB and they shouldn't bother changing it - and they also have Avatar/Community aspect well covered with Home.
