The E3 '08 Sony Prediction and Discussion Thread

You will be much happier at this time tomorrow. Unfortunately the irrational fanboys will still be here. This is the worst it has been since I've been here on GAF, that's for sure. Lemme know if you wanna game. Sent a PM on the PSN.

I hope so. All this console war shit is getting annoying. The worst generation by far.

I've only read up through page 31 but to steal the spotlight back from MS, I think Sony would have to announce a PS3 slim model and a $100 price drop. I kind of wish that I missed seeing the FFXIII announcement at work today. I got to catch the hilariously bad portion of the 360 conference and it was quite hilarious.

FFXIII = Lowest common denominator FTL. The only enhancement between versions is likely to be uncompressed sound.

They gotta have a surprise, unless they got totally blind-sided by Square on this one.

For some reason I don't think Sony was blindsided by it.

SE most likely went to Sony with an offer to make FF13 exclusive for a nice chunk of change. Sony likely stuck with the "we don't buy exclusives" statement.

This is the result.

It's not that, SE was trumpeting FF13 as PS3 exclusive for the past 2 years.

If SquareEnix pointed out that porting was even a possibility, I would not be as shocked. For 2 years they stated that it is PS3 only, and we believed it.

The console war is bad because there is no winner the third parties are flocking to. They SHOULD be going to wii and that should end it, but as of now all the Western third parties are fighting over the two systems most similar.

That is my worry, especially since last generation, Square really did push the power of the PS2... would have loved to see them do the same for the PS3...

If that was the case, I'm sure Sony saved some $$ in doing so. The one country they will actually push a lot of hardware for FF13 is Japan where it is still exclusive for PS3. I mean is GTAIV could not sell that much hardware for either system, how will FF13 do it?

Since the Japanese PS3 version will be the first developed and the 360 port will then come after, hopefully the PS3 quality won't be compromised. Unfortunately that means for the US and Europe we will have to wait however long it takes for them to port it to 360 (localization shouldn't take nearly as long).

Considering that Infinite Undiscovery, Last Remnant, and Star Ocean get priority on the X360, we could see that times are changing.

Most of the announced SE lineup is going to the 360 at one point or another, except FFvs13 and with the FF13 announcement it is likely that versus will not be exclusive.

It's not that, it is perception.

FF13 was a huge PS3 exclusive and it would have likely sold many consoles as the premiere RPG franchise. Losing FF13 means that Sony just lost the biggest exclusive they had, and that ultimately means that there is nothing stopping the 360 from being the premiere JRPG home console.

Lowest common denominator is only FTL if there is a big difference between the denominators.

I don't have too much hope for something new and exciting and out of the blue to be shown tomorrow.

After today I don't think Sony really cares about gaming anymore :-/

this, plus it seems like it's being developed on PS3 first then ported to 360, and the White Engine is multiplat since GDC anyways.

hm. im putting my faith in Tetsuya Nomura to push the ps3. as we all know he directed advent children and kingdom hearts. he's directing ffv13. and ill shit bricks if he directs a ff7 remake.

the ps3 would be the most amazing system ever if Tetsuya Nomura made a kh3, ffv13, and ff7 fucking amazing.

his dark style is so yummy.

With that said a better way to say it is that there are ZERO traditional RPG's. The PS3 has strategy RPG's like Valkyria Chronicles that looks to revolutionize the subgenre. There are other games like Disgaea 3 and Tears to Tiara (which will never get a USA release).

I have Senjyou no Valkyria, and yes it does revolutionize many things, basically the game is just Sakura Wars meets Gears of War which equates to GODDESSLINESS! XD

But still the FFXIII news is hard for me, it looks like the only people sticking behind Sony are Hideo and Sega of Japan given Valkyria, RGGK, and RGG3.

Valkyria is and still is my GOTY2008 btw.

I don't see any reason why FFXIII would suffer in quality at all from going multiplatform. This was a recent decision from Square-Enix, and FFXIII has been in development for the PS3 for 3+ years. SE will not even begin to port the game to the 360 until the PS3 version is completed and released in Japan. The fact of the matter is that this *is* being built for the PS3 from the ground up. Crystal Tools is a multiplatform engine, so porting to the 360 shouldn't be too difficult, but I don't see any reason to believe that the PS3 version of the now multiplatform FFXIII would be at all inferior to the same game as an exclusive.

I'm done arguing the whole Final Fantasy fiasco. DONE.
Can we move on please?

What do you guys expect of GoWIII??? CG Trailer?? Hopefully in-game?

What about Heavy Rain? Maybe some info on Sony last BIG franchise, GT5???

Yeah, but no strategy RPG before combined such elements to make it appeal to a wider audience, so it is revolutionary.

Valkyria Chronicles has the potential to appeal to a wide audience, assuming Sega markets it right, and Americans can get past the art style to buy an Anime-looking game.

Wasn't that canceled?

Anyway as awesome as all the 1st/2nd party games Sony has coming out, the PS3 is pretty much becoming a Nintendo console post-Snes and pre-Wii. =(

Prove me wrong Sony, prove me wrong.

anyone post this?

"Despite the recent announcement of Final Fantasy XIII headed to the Xbox 360, Kitase has apparently said to Kotaku that Final Fantasy Versus XIII is still a Playstation 3 exclusive. He also mentioned that there are "no plans" to include motion controls.

Kitase was asked through Kotaku's Live Blogging feature.

Question: Motion controls?
Kitase: "No, we have no plans."
Question: "Will FF Versus 13 be multi plat?"
Hashimoto: No.
Question: FFXIII uses a properitary engine. Correct me if I'm wrong, that's the last time, it will be used.
Hashimoto: "We haven't made any changes about that."

In addition, Kitase was asked a few more questions.

- Crystal Tools is a PC based engine, so the game will be developed on a PC then ported to the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

- The Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 versions will have the same content, but of course the Xbox 360 will have DVD(s) and the PS3 version will have a Blu-Ray. He wouldn't comment on the number of discs the Xbox 360 version will take up.

- Final Fantasy XIII will first be released in Japan and then development / translation will start on the English version. Then development will start on the Xbox 360 version.

HOPEFULLY S-E shows up at Sony's presser and announce 1-2 new titles... Grandia, KH any..

what'll happen if S-E doesnt make an appearance at Sony's presser??

its quite strange that S-E isnt loyal to another Japanese company..
