2 of the best I've found is the Gildour(sp?) Amulet which is +30 to health and magic and stamina and the spellbreaker shield. The shield is noticeably better than ebony, lighter and casts a strong ward anytime you block, which doesn't drain your magicka.

That shield seems cool, guess I'll go hunt it down later.

I think it was a good idea for me to play 2 characters, both of my saves aren't really too huge, and I did different sets of quests on either character, I think I'll just finish the main quest on either one of my character when I feel like it and I'll never run into the permanent stuttering.

Dax, if you haven't already, talk to the blacksmith in Riverwood and chat up everyone else in the town. I can't believe I never did before. In light of the conversation earlier today about needing to learn about the war, it's almost comic how plainly it's all spelled out there.
I think I did attempt to talk to the blacksmith but there wasn't any dialogue options about the civil war. Same with everyone else in town. I think I missed my point in which I could ask about the civil war. Which sucks because, as a new player, I'm hardly following the story and the game doesn't do a good job of explaining the importance of the civil war. Hell, I don't think I would've even realized there was a civil war going on if you guys on GAF hadn't told me.

Put some gear together to get the ball rolling on my new found love for archery. Got the shrouded cowl 20% boost, crafted a ring to add another 27% and unlocked the first archery perk which is 20%. I'll test it out, might have to boost that perk up to 40% and craft some gloves or something for another archery boost... that could put me at around 100% boost in archery. Fished a regular glass bow out of the chest and I just got the nightingale bow which is nice... See how that fares. Hopefully all this enchanting will balance out the fact that I have archery in the 30s at level 35.

How many times have you all saved? Just checked and I'm sitting at 1,142, 197 hours in.

Too much?

It is almost never too much. I mean, I don't save every few feet in a dungeon or anything, but I also hate to have to do stuff over and over if I die. So, I save regularly in the hopes of avoiding having to run certain sections over again.

I think I'm at roughly 700 saves and 80 hours of play.

Mask of Krosis also gives you a 20% archery boosts.

Wow lol, Winterhold's jail is amazing.

edit: damn you can go way farther north than I thought. Couple interesting things past Septimus' Outpost.

It takes up half the screen like Doom's BFG or something and the town's people will call out "get that mace away from me!!" from time to time.

What, you dont like a big ugly face staring at you all the time, or installing fear into the guard ;)
But yeah, the size of it is what keeps me from using it all the time.

I'm on save 395, 116 hours.

A little sneak is always good to have on the side for an archer. Picking apart bandits one by one while they pace around trying to figure out wtf is great fun. If you stay back, your companion, if you're using one, should stay back and croutch with you.

I'm at 13xx, 164 hours. It doesn't climb that fast anymore since I don't die so I rely on auto-saves in my play sessions now.

Yea, I have Krosis and Valsung and I think I'm about to acquire a third(got another letter from a "mysterious friend" the only previous one has resulted in Valsung).

Anyway, I just completed my first quest line, the theives guild. What annoys me is that the "one with the shadows" trophy requires an insane amount of little jobs, like a bare minimum of 20. I'll be stuck with this forever.

I think my shrouded cowl was bugged or something. It looked exactly the same as the non shrouded one. Pretty weird. I really wanted to have the same mask that
Astrid was wearing when you first met her in the little cabin

Anybody else had a similar problem with this item?

I'm dreading that one to, doing it bit by bit now.

Wow, just finished an epic dragon battle in Riverwood that wiped out half the town. Alvor and his wife, both dead.

No offense to Bethesda, but that's really a dubious gameplay mechanic. Unless Alvor respawns at some point, Blacksmithing in Riverwood has effectively come to an end. Sure, I can always whip around the map for alternate smiths, but that's not how I was rolling. Oh well, c'est la vie.

Nothing stops you from using his forge. But yeah, if you need to buy ingots and leather strips, gotta go somewhere else.

For the past fifty or so minutes of game time I've gone to about three different towns and have people from every town tell me some variation of the following: You look sick.

What the hell is going on?

You have a disease. Certain enemies are diseased and you can contract them if they hit you (rats, vampires, etc.).

Go to Magic --> Active Effects to see which.

Hit up a shrine of one of the Divines, or chug a Cure Disease potion.

You've got a disease. Check your active effects in the Magic menu. Use a Cure Disease potion.

Oho. Thanks! I'll take care of that when I resume playing it later today.

...

Might I say that I think Solitude is the most impressive city in Skyrim (that I've seen). I think it's by far my favorite city. I love the location and the architecture. It's also very strategically located; it'd take a lot of men to capture the city. It's been constructed so anyone who's attacking the city essentially has to funnel the forces at the front gates.

I'm in the middle of taking out that
fort
for that one female Imperial soldier. I think I'm going to decide to do Imperial because I got a really good impression of the leader, Elisif the Fair.

Or stroll into any temple(they're in every town) to get a blessing, that will cure diseases for free. "Active effects" under magic is a really helpful thing to check...

edit: whoops, too late.

Besides what everyone else has told you, have you talked to Brelyna at the mage's college? She does a quest that makes you sick and it can get bugged so the sickness never goes away. I had to use a console command to advance the quest. I spent a couple dozen hours being told how sick I looked because of her.

Nah I haven't. I guess I'll make sure to avoid that quest then. :)

Ya' know, if the game has a "yield" mechanic, they should actually yield instead of just getting up in a few seconds. It serves no point but giving me a free kill, because if I don't, they'll just get up and attack me anyway. Dumb.

Agree. I'd liked to have seen defeated foes actually crawl away from the battle for good. In addition to making sense, it would enable additional role playing for those who wanted to be merciful to defeated foes. There are a few mechanics in the game like that which don't make sense.

Alis began her quest last night, on Master difficulty. I'm doing something unusual for me, which is following the planned story path for a bit (I'll go off the rails later tonight). Doing so led to many enjoyble details, such as the extended conversation about the civil war back in Riverwood, and the brother of the guy that runs the Riverwood Trader escorting me out of town and directing me to the path up to Bleak Falls Barrow.

Alis is a one-handed axe user who specializes in Alteration, Illusion and Destruction magic, as well as Alchemy, Smithing and Enchanting. She will make heavy use of the axe's bleeding damage augmented with heavy long-lasting poisons to strike enemies and watch them bleed out, when she's not busy turning them on one another or setting traps. She will not pick up a bow. I didn't yet have an axe by the time I was at Riverwood, so I smithed one, improved it, and hauled it there with me. It felt good to make my own equipment and head off with it. I might make that part of her character.

The draugr kicked my ass. It got to the point where I was terrified of individual Draugr Scourge, and had to resort to leading them through traps or otherwise using hit and run tactics. The giant spider also presented a formidable challenge and took several minutes of dancing to take down; one bite would sap half my health.

And I loved it. I'd forgotten what it was like to have to proceed with caution, to have to rummage through my inventory for potions and scrolls. I've learned a fair bit about the melee system (shield staggers FTW) and while it's still clunky, it's got a touch more depth than I had thought.

Now to pick up my first Alteration spells (leaning toward Frenzy) so I can start building that side of her character.

I'll probably get dragons out into the word and work on saving for a house in Whiterun this time around (I didn't buy that house previously), then work on jugging the College, Companions and Main quest lines as the week progresses. It was tough to get myself to retire Luna, but I think this will be more fun in the end.

I have Enchanting up to 100% and have the two effects on one item perk, but I haven't really started enchanting stuff yet (other than jewellery etc used to sell/level up Enchanting itself) - what's the best way to get the maximum enchanting bonus without 'cheating'? Wear all enchanting gear, drink a potion? What sort of Enchanting bonus % should I be seeing? At the moment I think I'm still only getting single figure % bonuses.

Forgot where I got it, but I found an Ebony helmet of Archery early on with a 35% bonus on it. Also rocking a ring and gauntlets with Archery bonus - enemies don't stand a change with a sneak attack! ^_^

This is something that I've been wondering about too. My Enchanting is hovering around 70ish but I expect to be around 100 soon enough. My bonuses are also really low.

Oblivion Walker Trophy done! Everyone should go after those 15 quests. Some of the best, wackiest quests in the game and great loot. Just make sure you don't turn up your nose at killing innocent followers and then maybe eating them, you'll need all 15 items for the trophy/achievement to clear and that means doing the deadric princes' bidding.

Just started the Thieves Guild quests. Pretty funny getting tossed into jail for the first time in the game.

Starting to feel like I should develop smithing / crafting to make a better sword. I never do any of the alchemy / smithing type stuff.

Random dragon fight when leaving Riften. Two horses got in on that action. It was hilarious.

Get Alchemy and Enchanting at 100, or at least high enough to be good. Enchant crap iron gear and necklace/ring with "fortify alchemy" or whatever its called for creating more powerful potions. Then wear that same alchemy gear to create smithing and enchanting potions that you will then use when improving gear and enchants. Profit! Repeat to infinite if you want to "cheat". I didnt bother because it gets very boring after a while, and doing it once makes your gear powerful enough even for Master difficulty. I think i got some gloves with +45% two handed weapon damage.

Great, my Thieve's Guild quest is bugged. After shaking down the shopkeepers, Brynjolf just cycles through his congratulatory dialogue and never moves from his stool.

EDIT: fixed by reloading.

Any cool places/items to see/get for a magic user (Witch) not aligned with any factions or guilds? I'm trying to keep my character away from most quests, so just random areas or "go here..." is good enough!

There are 16 artifacts, and you only need 15 to get the trophy.

Just hike up to High Hrothgar by way of Iverstead and go from there, also check out Bard's Leap Summit. Most of the game is gorgeous. But, there are no items to pick up at either place and you'll have to visit the first one early in the main quest. Like I said, the coolest items are all related to the Deadric quests... some of the coolest places too.

Right, I actually had to get both of the items from that one quest in Falkareth because I didn't pick up a staff early on. It's just easier to avoid that deal, or if you've completed that quest before finding out that you could get both items, you're also screwed. Just easier to pick up everything you can.

I may check out those Daedric quests, seeing as how they're mostly independent of the game's narrative. Thanks.

Ah, got it. I thought it was the ending of the Imperial side of the civil war. My bad!

A question about that.
If I do the main quest first, can I then not do the Imperial side of the Civil War? Is that was Jeff Chen was talking about? I want to see the Imperial side of the war, but was going to do the main quest first. Should I reverse them?

I finished the Imperial questline after I finished the Main Quest.

So, I'm the Thane of Haafingar, right? I commit a crime inside Haafingar. +40 bounty. I put down my hands and yield to the guard. How do I tell him I'm a Thane and thus above the law? I thought being a Thane let you get away with anything...

In other news,
killing the Emperor's cousin
only gets you a bounty of 40 gold pieces. L to the O L.

Repairing the White Phial quest is glitched for me... I go to take the Briarheart from the corpse (followed the quest marker as well) and it doesn't recognise it thus the quest doesn't update.
