so to complete the popular music survey, which songs were the most downloaded/streamed on the various services? which songs/albums were the most pirated?

The lol at Gaga being forgotten anytime soon. She's the only one in years, and certainly currently, that has a shot at having the longevity of Madonna. Call her albums vapid or whatever, but the girl has undeniable raw talent. But the nonbelievers can keep spouting their nonsense, though I question until when will they continue doing so because it's been going on since 2008. Are you lot going to wait until she finally has a bad year, who knows when, to say "hah! I was right!" You'll sound as prophetic as those on the gaming side proclaiming their accuracy for calling the Wii a fad in 2006 as the system finally "underperformed" in 2010.

Old people love a song called "I just haven't met you yet." After all those years they should stop looking.

HBIC of the music industry. More hard working and talented than your favorite. Will top 2011 with Born This Way. Her disco stick is bigger than yours. Anything else?

Positions 11-40 can be found at source. Kanye-GAF: MBDTF sold 1.1 million copies (#39).

had to look this one up... how the fuck?

Michael buble's aversion to buttoning his top button has always annoyed me

But YAY gaga

:lol People always put their nostalgia goggles on in these kinds of threads. Find the top 10 selling list for every year of the 80s and 90s and you are probably going to find a lot of shit.

yep. she's aged the best out of any woman I've ever seen, and her voice is undoubtedly one of the best voices in all music

I dare anyone to challenge that.

taylor swift is really just an american thing. almost none of my friends know her. and the ones that know her just watched the mtv awards one year ago.

i dont get the gaga hate. the album is really really good.

Gaga seems like she makes really catchy glowstick music. I have some of her songs favorite'd on youtube but I just can't go the full way and buy/download the album.

Haven't listened to an Eminem album since Encore. That song with Rihanna was one of the worst I heard this year.

Not interested in the kind of music Biebs, Swift, Boyle, or Sade make.

Never heard of Lady Antebellum or Michael Buble.

BEP's is terribly annoying. I do like the song "Meet me halfway" but mainly because it sounds 80's/new-wavish. It's still a pretty annoying song actually but sonically I enjoy it.

I liked A.Keys when she first came out but once she started becoming a "hook girl" and got all involved with rap and pop I sorta stopped caring.

Not a good year for me in regards to popular music.

not interested in Sade? how dare you.

I like "No Ordinary Love" but never felt the need to check out her albums.

Outside of some of the 60's and 70's stuff, I'm not really into contemporary R&B. Either sounds really boring, or manipulatively over produced.

"Smooth Operator" and "Soldier of Love" are both fantastic Sade songs.

Then again, Sade is really only best fit with a certain mood, like winding down from a long day. Her voice is so impossibly smooth.

Eminem's CD has only been out 6 months while Gaga's has been out the entire year...plus he's the best selling artist of 2000-2009.

And he's still on top after 11 years. So if anyone is a certified supermegastar at this point it's him.

Heh, nice to see Gaga be number #1 on the list...

BTW, when is the next Player Hater's Ball coming up, GAF? :-3

Didn't you just defeat your own point? You established Eminem is a certified superstar and Gaga is still an up and coming newcomer, yet she managed to take the crown for best selling album of the year. In no way is Eminem not an enormously successful artist, but the sales of the Fame Monster are a bigger accomplishment than the sales of Recovery, especially when you factor in that the version on this list is the re-release of The Fame (an album from 2008).

Eminem is #1 in the United States for 2010. Also his sales are impressive considering his comeback from drugs and a lukewarm to negative mainstream reception for his 2009 album Relapse. He was basically gone from the music scene since late 2004.

Also, I'm confused...when I look on Amazon Fame Monster is a new album with 8 songs....

I feel good that I am 35 years old but I still know who 9 of the 10 top selling artists are.

And I am kind of amazed that Sade is on that list. I remember when Smooth Operator was a big hit. I was like 9. I bet half of GAF were still tadpoles.

Exactly.

Gaga this year has been at least this |---------------------| great, while eminem was only |--------------| great. Then again, on my list of awesomeness Jesusinem is still at least 3 clovers greener than Godga. Tekken master has a great point though about the drugs. Every album you sell after a drug addiction only counts as half a sale on the lists. So in reality EminemLord sold twice as much as officially listed.

My dad is a cop though, so he's awesomer than all the people on the list combined. He has handcuffs to take all you haterzzzz down!!!!

The Fame Monster is the 8-track EP that was only released in select countries (and on iTunes). The album on the best seller list is the re-release of The Fame with those 8 new tracks (this version came out at the same time as the EP).

And though being #1 selling artist in the US is an accomplishment, it's obviously irrelevant when we're discussing worldwide sales.

Wow, rock is fucking dead :( Not a single album in the top 10 even if the genre has thousands of sub-genres now.

Don't get me wrong, I know silly pop acts will always be popular, and I like small indie albums as long as they're good but it's kind of sad to know that record labels won't spend big money in a rock album again :(

I will certainly miss big and experimental or innovative productions like The Wall, Sgt. Pepper or even Metallica's Black album. Talent will always be there, but confidence from labels and big producers with expensive gear, it seems to be gone forever.

/depressive rant

Albums I bought this year...

Florence + the Machine- Lungs
Taylor Swift- Speak Now
Kanye West- My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Janelle Monae- The ArchAndroid
Arcade Fire- The Suburbs

3/5 on the list, right? I'm so not cool lol

Gaga is a gimmick. You can't compare her to Madonna. People copied Madonna's style. You can't copy Gaga's style, because it's stupid, impractical, ridiculous and only designed for shock value.

I think Gaga would have a much higher chance at longevity if she put away the gimmicks and acted like a normal human being. And don't give me that 'bububu she's just expressing herself!' It's so transparent. If she was genuine about expressing herself she'd do it through her music instead of writing shallow pop songs.
