You for real?

You have heard this song, SOMEWHERE: Smooth Operator

she's a pop star with a voice of a goddess (and one of the most remarkable in all music)

she's been around since before ANY of these other people on the list were even born.

Dreams-Visions: I almost never agree with you, but this is the one time. Sade is gorgeous.

Sad, sad haters, compelled to tear down what they don't understand.

Much, much more fun to love Gaga and go along for the ride. Roller coaster ain't stopping anytime soon.

Yeah I agree, maybe I didn't write it properly, but I was trying to put that record in the "big budget" category. The kind of expensive production with easy and catchy singles that sells millions and helps other smaller, more experimental acts to get some exposure at radio, TV, etc. I don't see more of that albums happening in rock, at least in the near future. Like it or not, the Black Album was an awesome commercial album; it might have been the start of Metallica's downward spiral, but the music -and specially the production- were top tier at the time.

Ah, yeah, now that I can agree with. Their s/t album had a pretty grand production (and the best production they'd had at the time), even though it ultimately wasn't much more than a generic rock album (the Load albums were interesting releases on the other hand, as the band experimented with everything from grungy alternative rock to country on those albums).

That's a huge fucking shame.

Anyway, Soldier of Love is the reason she sold so many copies this past year. It's brilliant.
I'm not sure if there's an official Sade channel on youtube, but if there is, you're actually better of not linking to those. They often get blocked for international (and sometimes US) viewers. Like with both Sade links you've posted. I always link to non-official uploads of videos.

I still find it hard to believe people genuinely like Kesha, oh well. I haven't listened to any of the top 10 besides Sade and part of Eminem.

That's like something that someone would make to mock pop music except I think she's for realsies. Wow, if she is.

Ke$ha is trashy and crappy, but I will always defend her honesty. For example, her live renditions sound just as bad as the studio versions. If you are a fan at a concert of hers, you are getting exactly what you expect!

Then you have the Katy Perry and the Rihannas who can't hit half the notes on their songs. What the fuck is the point of creating something you can't possibly sing? Dear lord, Katy Perry doing Teenage Dream or Firework live is like nails on chalkboard, and that poor Rihanna sounds like a wailing goat singing Only Girl and What's My Name. Even fucking Christina Aguilera (out of all people) did shit on her latest flop album she could never replicate live. This is borderline deception.

probably because she just lip syncs if the video i posted is any indication

lol @ the guy onstage with the guitar like he's actually playing something

Judging by the title this should just be pop music thread.

So lets talk about how Rihanna's Rude Boy has a bomb ass beat (on the hook)

You know, I get that Lady Gaga fans are defensive because the artist is pretty much perpetually under attack, but this is beyond that. A lot of the anger in this thread is directed at the fact that all ten of those albums cover a very narrow section of the musical spectrum. That's shit, no matter who you like.

The charts always look like this. What the hell were you expecting? The only real major genre not on here is rock which has sadly fallen out of the mainstreams eye.

This is pretty much exactly in line with my expectations; my expectations and my desires are two very different things. That the music industry has been in a poor state for a long time does not excuse the fact that the music industry continues to be in a poor state.

EDIT: The term "major genre" is totally ridiculous, by the way.

I get the criticism of Gaga being too gimmicky, but I laugh when people act like she's not a Madonna-level talent.

The girl is crazy talented - far more so than Madonna ever was. I'd argue that Madonna was far more reliant on her image than Gaga, simply because Madonna has never been a particularly good singer.

By major genre I meant that everyone with common sense knows you're never gonna see a jazz or death metal album on these charts.

So what you're looking for is "currently popular genre"?

Not really. Rihanna was doing the whole "weird popstar" bit before Gaga made it to the airwaves. Nicki Minaj isn't much different now than from her earlier mixtapes.

Koodo said:
Nothing before "Rated R" could be classified as "weird." I think it's false to say Rihanna copied Gaga (those desperate attempts at imitation are the ones that end up in failure, i.e. Christina Aguilera). I think it is correct to say Gaga opened the door for more freakier styles though. Rihanna wouldn't have been allowed to look like a cockatoo if Gaga wasn't walking down the red carpet in a meat dress.

DMeisterJ said:
Yay! My baby Rihanna is on the list (twice) :)

And :lol at the notion of her 'copying' Gaga. Rih is all her own.
I didn't mean that Rihanna is necessarily "copying" Gaga, but she started doing stuff like this (music video for Hard):

So, I don't mean it in a negative way, but Gaga took the costume/character thing to an extreme and naturally the industry followed suit. At least Rihanna was able to pull it off, unlike a certain Ke$ha:

Take That, 2,2 million copies? Boy bands still got it.

And the Take That sales are within less than 6 weeks - it's been insane.

Totally justifiable success, though. Amazing album, the best Take That or Robbie Williams have ever been involved in. Evolution, capital E.

I just got the new Solefald album on vinyl and it came personally signed to me and also came with a promo copy of one of the ban member's side projects.

Just sayin'.

Don't like Gaga. Not surprised though. Whatever. Le the people like what they like. I personally find her music pretty annoying and her persona a bit too much.

Its not that I call those bad taste. Its taste nevertheless. what kind of puts me off is that, those music are just good for first impression. I bet peopel who bought those track are bored already, thats why they are succeccsul. Popele listen to it first time and think that its good music while underground less known music are known to hold your intrest for very long because of creativity and creating something in the very least.

well, as long as music sells, i won't complain...

How fucked is the music industry when a $60 video game can sell more in 24 hours than the most popular $12 CD in the country can in a year? I know there are more ways to monetize music than just selling albums, but these numbers seem obscenely low given how much more pervasive music is in our culture.
OP says these are actually worldwide sales, which makes it (imo) even more surprising. I had no idea how horrible CD sales are (I know that digital download is way more popular nowadays but still, damn).

What's with the country love in the USA. Lady Antebellum? Taylor Swift that high (no, I've never heard of her outside of GAF. If it wasn't for Kanye's stunt last year I'd still be oblivious to her existence)?

wow I'm glad Sadé got some love. This makes me want to buy her CD. :D

I believe Lady Gaga earns that spot. Everyone basically knows her or her songs even if they hate her.

What they call country nowadays is nothing but pop sung with a funny accent. It's as mainstream as it gets. Labels like country don't mean anything anymore when those people are thrown in the same genre as the people who helped define it in the first place. It just doesn't make any sense.

GAF's Bob Woodward
In terms of how much the whole album gives, and the consistent quality of the songs, it's one of my favourite pop albums ever. (The Fame Monster that is).

Plus I do love 'Gaga' in the broader sense so...I'm not unhappy about that success.

Gaga=the next MJ confirmed.

Hope that was a joke. These numbers are pitiful next to MJs. Off the wall then Thriller, now repeat that to yourself. Think about it, he came out with an 11/10 album then one that is unquantifiable which continues to grow in sales - 20yrs on. Now sit down.

And wow at Em - He's still got it.

Edit: WOW & MJ selling that much in a week!
