Do I have to have watched Arrow to gain context for this show? Because I love The Flash and I forgot this came on last night, and I don't watch Arrow.

I would really recommend you watch Arrow first if you think you might like it. You don't have to, but there is a bit of continuity between the two. Not massive, but if you find you really enjoy Arrow you'll enjoy watching that first, I think. If Arrow's not your thing, though, you should be okay without watching it.

I'm honestly surprised by how awesome this premiere was. As a comic fan, I was obligated to watch by whatever metric, but there were some legitimately awesome moments that were missing from Arrow until much later in its run. The SFX really work for the series, and it only makes it cooler that they're able to do smart tricks to make it look cool on their budget. Grant Gustin - instantly likable. I really liked the
cheesy
conversation with Green Arrow; it didn't feel shoe-horned in and really highlighted, not only the dichotomy in the [interpretations of the] characters, but in the directions of each series. Arrow tried to ride on the Nolan standard by introducing a grungy hero before eventually finding its legs, but Flash is going for a completely different tone more in a Sam Raimi Spider-Man vein.

I'm kind of sad, though, because I feel like whichever series came first would have had the same dark approach Arrow got even though Green Arrow is rarely portrayed as such a serious character.

You don't, but Arrow made me a GA fan. I recommend it.

I've only watched part of s1 of Arrow, so should I keep going and then start this with s3 of arrow? Or can I jump right in?

I know flash starts in arrow so I'd really hate to "ruin" his big debut of his powers and stuff if that's supposed to be a cool moment in arrow (I feel like it would be)

regardless I'm going to catch up on arrow(which me and the wife both really like), but I'm curious if I should wait on Flash

Those numbers are pretty amazing considering the pilot leaked like 2 months before the premiere.

His role in Arrow isn't all that important to the Flash series, but I foresee them bringing in a certain character from Arrow frequently which would lose some of its significance if you didn't see his appearance there. For now, though, you can watch Flash and catch up with Arrow concurrently no problem. They do directly reference his appearance in Arrow in the first episode of Flash, though; it feels kind of weird because there's a sort-of time gap. Also, Green Arrow has a cameo in the first episode which references the previous crossover.

I know it's the pilot so it likely had some additional funds attached to it but I thought this one looked better than both Gotham and Agents of SHIELD although those two are probably far more expensive shows.

It brings me such joy that a series this good devoted to the Flash is on TV and got incredible ratings.

to answer your question-you technically don't need to watch Arrow to enjoy the Flash, but there dis no excuse for not watching Arrow, and your enjoyment of the Flash will be much more richer if you do so.

Mods change the topic to

RUN BARRY RUN

Gotta go fast is so stupid

I agree!

Very happy to see incredible ratings and a good start for The Flash, especially he is one of my favorite comic book characters. CW are really onto something special with this and Arrow. I can't wait to see where this goes :)

The Flash is my favorite DC superhero so the series making a triumphant return is great news!!!

I still say Barry's face under mask still looks weird, but the costume and lightning running effects are awesome!

Also is barry's dad the original Flash in the first tv show?

Seriously, Iris friendzoning Barry like there was no tomorrow was hysterical.

Still holding onto:
The Flash |OT| Even the fastest man alive can't escape the friend zone

I kinda want this now cause it was so damned clear in the pilot.

Yep

As far as pilots go, very good stuff. It's for sure more light hearted than Arrow, but still feels in the same universe. Also, like Arrow, it immediately set up a load of plot threads to run with, while AoS failed to do this til well into its first season and Gotham has been very muddled about.

Thumbs up.

She couldn't have been more in his face about it either.

"I know what you're trying to say Barry. You think that even though we grew up in the same house and sometimes think of each other as siblings, we aren't actually siblings and there's a chance that there might be some real sexual chemistry between us that could one day turn into a real romantic relationship? Well don't worry, that will never happen."

"Cool..."
"Cool..."

Loved that moment.
"You can be better, because you can inspire people in a way that I never could...Watching over your city like a guardian angel...Making a difference...Saving people...In a flash".
I don't really care how this sounds, combined with music it was fucking amazing, and Amell delivered this line perfectly.

And they kept the WayneTech reference!
Really thought it was going to be pilot hype fluff that gets cut from the final version.

How did they go from not even being able to say "Gotham" on 2 seasons of Arrow to a direct freaking name drop of Bruce Wayne's company in the first episode of Flash?

They already dropped the Bat-embargo with Gotham itself and considering Supergirl is coming, the Supes embargo also looks weak. DC might have loosened up.

Gotta be honest, kinda hate that line

Hilariously obvious.

Yeah, that was a fantastic "Dare to be Badass" moment.

Just watched the pilot. As a total Flash newbie I have to say that was pretty good. I could not help but to think about Infamous games while watching this. :p

I did like that bit a lot, even though Oliver's dialogue just before was terrible.

Heh, it was a bit cheesy. Amell has come a long way, though. He can take a line like that and make people take it seriously. The music was a good touch as well. Love the way Oliver challenged Barry to be something better.

I'm just having a blast with Arrow and now The Flash. CW has done a great job overall, all things considered.

No one's more disappointed than me. I would love to love Flash, because I would love to see most of DC's heroes fully realized in all their glory. But it's fine, I got Agents of Shield and Gotham and Gravity falls. I'll start watching Soprano's soon, I think, or something like that. I'm covered in terms of quality shows.

I tried watching Agents of Shield and found there was no motivation for me to watch. I tried again, for this season's premiere, and it still didn't grab me. It just feels so small. I already feel like The Flash is more epic.
