I've been eyeing the book too. Can't make my mind up. Does anyone have it?

I have a copy. I've only briefly skimmed through bits and pieces, but it is very good. It gives you a good overview of the car and it's design and manufacture. There are also a lot of good pictures and some CAD parts which give aid in the explanation of areas of the car.

Scarbs did a detailed review, and has some page samples.

That`s rather encouraging, I feared it might be a dumbed down explanation of the car and it`s development and fabrication. Haynes book on the Titanic is pretty good also fwiw. Might have to finally click that BIN-button on eBay...

He's still a cock - don't suck up to him.

I have no sympathy for people who beat up their ladies - utter twat. What has Verstappen done before out of curiosity?
Convicted for assault (fractured a man's skull) in 2000 and given a suspended sentence after settling out of court. He also reportedly assaulted his ex-wife in 2008.

No, this is the future of F1 the way things are going right now; less about talent and more about how much money you can bring to the team.

Still not as bad as it was in the 80's, but it seems to be getting worse after a few years with almost no pay drivers a while ago.

Why is that? Is it the recent cost cutting? Was there even any major cutting? (obviously not the £40m cap the FIA wanted, but I do remember talks of cuts)

A combination of things; budgets actually getting increasing larger especially for the big teams, meaning the smaller teams need extra finances from somewhere just to keep up, yet alone challenge. There's also the Bernie factor as well as the pot of money that the teams get at season's end been split between more teams. Sponsors not seeing any worth in F1 and pulling out is also a problem, especially in the current financial climate. Money has to come from somewhere and pay drivers fit the bill perfectly.

Tony Fernandes of Caterham F1 said that 10th place in the constructors was worth $30million to them, I'm assuming in British pounds?

Yeah, pretty much what Dantes said. I think it is mostly sponsors drying up while costs are increasing if anything. Be nice if Bernie would pass around some more of the ridiculous TV money and hosting fees to the actual teams who supply the spectacle he promotes.

Just on the last few races of the 08 season and wish that some car manufacturers would return to f1. Would love to see the return of manufacturers like BMW, Toyota and Honda. Kind of surprised some car companies haven't dipped a toe in such as VW who are one of the biggest.

Audi, VW or even Bugatti would be great to see as teams in F1. Perhaps not VW (not exactly the right stigma for an F1 team) but either Bugatti or Audi would be a great drawcard.

I'd add Lamborghini to that as well. It would ignite a lot of childhood memories for many car enthusiasts who inevitably argued about Ferrari and Lambo in the playground. I know whose side I was on.

Manufacturers hate losing though. When you've got a couple of manufacturers like we do now, it works out lovely because they've got the independents to beat. But when the grid is 90% manufacturer, someone has to lose and lose badly.

F1 was an embarrassment for Honda, Toyota and BMW.

Well, I didn't follow VW during Le Mans 24hr this year, so no.
You may have also missed this bit:

Definitely. Some of the more "classic" teams, even if in name (and perhaps spirit) only would be kinda neat. As an Australian, Brabham would be awesome but there's a reason they're not in F1 anymore :(

Alfa Romeo coming back is pretty much an impossibility since both them and Ferrari are owned by Fiat.

I have a feeling that he will beat Rosberg this year and get that elusive podium finish. A win would depend on circumstances at the front.

Schumi was better than Britney this year.. err last year

I think it will be a clearer gap this year.. well I hope so

He really wasn't at all.

Schumi had a few moments where he was beating Rosberg and people obviously a lot of attention to this, but lets not ignore the mediocrity he displayed for 80% of the season.

sure, Schumi is the best

to be honest, I think he did a very good job and he was unlucky so many times this last year, if it wasn't for that you wouldn't have said what you just did

Thats again another misconception. Its true that Rosberg was by far the quicker guy in qualifying and that Schumacher was closer in race-pace, but Rosberg was STILL better in this regard. He just didn't have as much 'room for improvement' because he was already qualifying where he was SUPPOSED to be, while Schumacher had to claw his way back from his pitiful qualifying showings(which is pretty much the only reason Schumi topped the 'overtaking list' for 2011).

well, Schumi still managed to end higher than Rosberg in some races. How would you explain that?

I'd say that's a toss up career move. On one hand you get screwed out of racing but on the other, promoted to the top team currently. Plus, if more inseason testing is allowed it might not be so bad and you can show off your prowess to other teams.

What do you guys think?

Edit: Does anybody follow the Porsche vs VW "scandal?" For those that don't, Porsche nearly bought all of the VW group by being a Financial beast. As in, their financial team was better than their car making division. On the London Stock Exchange they kept on buying clumps of VW shares in small amounts such that their name didn't appear. They did this when buying as the LSE & Germany have a law stipulating that any purchase of 10% (don't quote me) or more the investor has to be identified so there can't be any hostile takeovers.

Fast forward to one Sunday in '06 I believe and Porsche made a press statement announcing that it had leveraged it's way into owning JUST over 50% of VW. Porsche had effectively bought VW bought lost out on a very old law protecting VW. But to make a long story short, they bit off more than they could chew and now we see the VW-Porsche merge. Which is more of a personal vendetta of Wolfgang Porsche and Ferdinand Piech who are at odds. Both are basically from the same family.

I can't find, well, don't have time to find a good summary but these help:

The in season testing will probably use regular season drivers I'd imagine. Still a good career move though, moving down to another series would have effectively ended his chances at getting a F1 drive again.

To summarize. Given the deep economic crisis that is hitting Spain, and specifically the Valencia region (high tax rises and great cuts in public expenditure have been recently announced), the Valencian government has sent a letter to Bernie to renegotiate the terms of the contract for the European GP. We know how Bernie reacts in these situations, so probably, he´ll say no and will find another place that pays even more. The only reason the Valencia government hasn´t axed the race unilaterally is because the penalty for doing it is even higher than the canon they pay to host the race.

"It is not possible in the way that we understand so far," he said. In that sense, suggested that the Consell has sent a letter to Bernie Ecclestone, President and CEO of Formula One Management, with whom the Government has signed a contract for the Grand Prix in Valencia, to address a possible revision. Ciscar admitted that the Government is in a position of weakness because it can not cancel this contract unilaterally, because then it would cause more economic problems you have.

"I still have not read my contract and do not know the impact it would cancel next year's Grand Prix," he added. The annual fee paid by the Government to Ecclestone's Formula 1 Valencia 21 million euros. Also, Channel 9 pays four million euros a year for the broadcasting rights. The construction cost of the street circuit around the 100 million euros.

I'm happy, but only if this means that Spa and/or another good European track sticks around to take its place (I'd also be fine with another South American GP, I just don't want to lose Spa).
