That's actually super sad. I bet Whitmarsh could give a great pep talk though. He looks so wise!
Lewis needs more than a pep talk. I agree with the BBC crew, he needs a long winter break and he needs to forget this season.

Just finished watching the race, Mark's race was great compared to the last few.

Anyone noticed how he looked at Hamilton's trophy and then looked at the sky? :(

Well Martin and Lewis have known each other since the very very early days, although he's no Ron Dennis.

I know its not formula 1, but that Indy car crash was horrible.
15 cars or so, with a few of them flying through the air. They also seemed to burst into flames slot easier than F1 cars - scary stuff!

Random question, anyone know where I can see the actual qualifying / race times for the remaining races? Want to know what time I have to wake up or if I have to make plans to keep my afternoon clear.

If you have an iPhone (or iOS device) the official F1 2011 (no relation to the game, thankfully!) app is perfect. Shows what time every session is both in your time and locally. It's really, really good. Also sends push notifications with race updates as well.

Edit: Oh shit, there was an IndyCar accident and fatality? Holy shit :(

formula1.com & go to races, it will give you the start times for your time zone.

Edit: Eugh, I was slow

I just love how refreshingly honest and candid he is in almost all interviews, both post-race* and otherwise. Very expressive. That deep breath he took before his question was quite telling on how he's feeling with his performance, IMO.

i agree, i think f1 is the pinical of safe racing

kubica's crazy crash at 07 montreal + webber's flip in valencia ... its frustrating to see indy cars disintegrate and the drivers pay for it with their lives. completely unacceptable.

Debris is everywhere, even in F1.

It's been only 2 years since we almost lost Massa. And we did lose Henry Surtees a week earlier in Formula Two. Kid got hit right in the middle of the head by a flying tire.

Came home after watching the race to see the Indy videos. Horrible.

As for the race I was so happy to see Petrov pull a tribute to Kubica on Schumacher. That was the only entertainment apart from the lap we got of Webber and Hamilton side by side. At least that was noteworthy.

Honestly it was pretty boring. Yes they were very close, but only a few times was there any potential for passes. In the end Button and Alonso couldn't do anything and Webber couldn't make it stick.

Having the DRS detection zone right after where Webber made that overtake was so frustrating. The track in general remains awful. One of the worst pit exits ever devised.

There's also the fact that open wheel racers were going 5-wide around a corner, but then that's Indy racing in the US.

Motorsport is inherently dangerous, freak accidents will always occur no matter how safe you try to make it.
Absolutely. As tragic as an incident like this is it's so frustrating to hear the reactions from people who don't follow racing. No one gets in a racing car without knowing the possible consequences, and even if they imagine it'll never happen to them they're still willing to accept the risks. All you can do after a tragic incident is do your best to learn from it and keep it from happening again.

And we do, thankfully. Look at all the innovations done for the drivers equipment, for example.

Pit entry, too.

Great point. It makes it so much riskier.

"It was like a movie scene which they try to make as gnarly as possible," said Danica Patrick, making her final IndyCar start.

Oh dear...

Still, when i see a f1 crash im not as worried as when i watch dtm or indy car racing.

Like its been said just look at some of the bad crashed like webber and co had, and walked away from without a scratch.

safety should always be the most important aspect in f1.

Thats why i sometimes dont understand how people react to safety cars etc

RIP Dan.

I literally just finished watching Senna and went to Autosport and saw the news about Wheldon's death. What a horrible crash.

Anyone else having issues with the Formula1.com 2011 app on iOS5? I've downloaded it a few times now and most of the text is missing when I load the app

I looked at the latest reviews on the App Store and it looks like it's broken on iOS 5 =\

Hope they update it soon...

I am on the verge of crying. That last quote of Wheldon is so disturbing now. Watched him win the indy 500 this year. Poor guy and his family.

RIP

"Thank you for the opportunity," Wheldon responded. "But please don't expect any flips like Travis Pastrana does because I'm not into that.

"I'm going to keep it on all four."

Really, with the number of crashes that had been like Wheldon's in the past at the 1.5-mile ovals, it was a ticking time bomb. Davey Hamilton survived a bad crash but sustained major injuries; Kenny Brack did as well at the same track, Texas; Ryan Briscoe had a nearly identical crash at Chicagoland. Dario Franchitti flipped TWICE in one season. They've known for a good long while these cars are prone to flipping at high speeds. And they thought they had a solution to try and put an end to this, but it was one race too late.

It's a tragedy that probably didn't even have to happen if the right measures had been taken sooner. Goodbye, Dan. We will all miss you.

Just saw the Indy crash, sends shivers down my spin. I don't think I want to read that ESPN article. RIP Dan.

F1 cars aren't as safe as you think. Any debris flying against traffic into the driver might lead to a fatal accident, Massa and Button's Spa race are just two examples of that.

Those sighs and deep breaths Webber do, he does them a lot this year :(

Edit: Just found a tumblr just about Rocky http://inoubliablerocky.tumblr.com/

Isn't that app really expensive? And they can't be bothered to update it in a timely manner? Wow.

I had a decent weekend, stationary at 29.

Edit: Shit, looks fine now, my preview was screwed up.

Yeah. With James Courtney I think. I wonder how well the team knew him?

Of course it's not 100% safe, they still take more safety precautions than most other autosports and that makes a lot of difference.

Massa's was a freak accident, and if it happened again today he would walk out fine. And that's because people looked at the old helmet and improved it, instead of simply accepting that this is a dangerous sport.

If the bit of front wing hit Button in the helmet, he wouldn't have walked away fine.

I'm saying that just because we didn't have a bad accident in the last 2 years in F1 doesn't mean it's as safe as some claim to be. It's done to luck in a lot cases than precautions.
