Hungary and Monza are closest GPs to me. Hungaroring at 540 km (my cousin is ~ 210 km from here) and Monza at 547 km. If we had race at Red Bull Ring (former A1 ring or Zeltweg circut), it would be only 198 km from my place

Whew, glad I did not purchase hotel and plane tickets to Austin. Now I can just cancel my hotel reservation.

YAY!!!!!

I almost booked hotels rooms that were nonrefundable, but decided against it on just this chance.

Sky Sports News reporting that Sky Sports have secured rights to F1 coverage in UK.

It's on Sky Sports News at the moment, details are sketchy at the moment, though.

EDIT: BBC confirming it.

The BBC and Sky Sports will broadcast Formula 1 in the UK between 2012 and 2018 under a new rights deal.

The BBC has been the exclusive broadcaster of F1 in the UK since 2009 but its contract with Formula One Management was due to expire after the 2013 season.

Sky Sports will show every race, qualifying session and practice live.

BBC Sport will broadcast half the races live, as well as the qualifying and practice sessions from those races.

Both companies will broadcast in High Definition.

The BBC will have highlights on TV and mobile for any race it it is not showing live, and all races will be broadcast on BBC Radio 5 Live.

Barbara Slater, director of BBC Sport, said: "We are absolutely delighted that F1 will remain on the BBC.

"The sport has never been more popular with TV audiences at a 10-year high and the BBC has always stated its commitment to the big national sporting moments.

"With this new deal not only have we delivered significant savings but we have also ensured that through our live and extended highlights coverage all the action continues to be available to licence fee payers."

Races shown live on BBC TV will include the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, the Monaco GP and the concluding race of the season.

Barney Francis, Managing Director of Sky Sports, said: "This is fantastic news for F1 fans and Sky Sports will be the only place to follow every race live and in HD.

"We will give F1 the full Sky Sports treatment with a commitment to each race never seen before on UK television."

Seriously, FUCK YOU Bernie. Miserable old cunt.

Shit, as early as next year?

Anyway, is it at all possible that they'll get some of the production crew from BBC to Sky to try and retain the current "feel" of it? What are the chances of Brundle and Coulthard going over?

Sky's coverage will shit all over the BBC's if they're 2002 coverage was anything to go by. However the viewing figures will collapse. Only football has done well with going Pay-TV. Majority voting in FOTA with a lack of manufacturers ardently against Pay-TV has delivered this.

Yeah. Not worried about the coverage, but the viewing figures. Shouldn't effect us too much in Australia, except we may lose out on commentary.

F1 is over in the UK.

Well done. Well done.

FUCK SAKE!! Its over. Sky Sports (Sky Sports 1-4 + News) have 5% of the TV market share in the UK & even less in Ireland.
BBC coverage may aswell be over now as the current broadcasting team can't do 10 races a year.

FUCK FUCK FUCK!!

Looks like the rumours of BBC wanting to cancel its contract early were true.

I can't see how unless Sky can do it better unless they do per driver camera view for the race through interactive but I don't think FIA have this capability. The BBC coverage now is the best you can deliver with what's available from the FIA TV feeds.

As long as we don't have anyone from Channel Ten deciding that Greg Rust and Darryl Beattie should do the commentary.

The BBC coverage has been outstanding and it would be a great shame to lose that.

Oh, Sky is pay? I have no idea. Hopefully it doesn't affect Australian coverage... if we get Speed, I think I'll vomit.

I've got Foxtel HD at home but no free 2 air so I wouldn't mind at all if the F1s were on Foxtel in HD =P

I will never forget the first Australian GP Ten covered. Fucking rubbish the whole way through. I think it was Crompton, Rust, and Diffie doing the honours. Just painful.

Adam Cooper (Autosport) already confirming that the BBC team as we know is it is gone.

Sky couldn't care less about viewership figures only retaining paid subscribers and this is another notch on the post to retain those very valuable punters.

This is far worse than F1 being on ITV in the past. Its behind a pay wall now and with ads too. Its a double whammy to deter the casual fan who has flocked to the BBC coverage in the last 2 years.

I can see the BBC quietly dropping its coverage completely within 2 years.

Can't believe they're actually stupid enough to abandon terrestrial channels. The viewing figures are going to fall through the floor.

It's the end of F1 as a popular sport in this country.

what a load of alarmist bullshit from people here.

just wait to see what Sky have planned, also, you can still have bbc comms, you will just have to put your radio next to tv.

On the plus side - at least Sky Sports News will now acknowledge that Formula 1 is an actually sport instead of just ignoring it as they used to.

Just wait to see what Sky have planned, also, you can still have bbc comms, you will just have to put your radio next to tv.

I have no doubt that sky coverage will be fantastic, but they just dont have the viewing figures in comparison to the BBC.

Any word on how/if the BBC coverage will change? Will it just as good as it is now except for half the races?
Or will they cut back with it & make it rubbish?

And do we know any details of what races BBC will cover? Silverstone, Monaco & the last race...and what else?

You have missed the point completely. Expecting people to subscribe to watch races is shit.

God damn it, that's bad news...
Honestly shit should just stay at the BBC, their coverage is so stellar nothing's ever going to compare to it.

Bernie you old fool!

Still kind of sketchy but from what I've seen so far, the BBC will cover all the "European" GPs live leaving Sky with the Asian fly-away races live & probably US races except for Brazil GP.

Well I'm done with F1 until it returns to terrestrial television. Screw you Bernie. I'll read the points tallies on a website a couple of times a year and that's it.

HEY CRICKET! F1 wants to be your buddy.

If Sky can get Brundle & DC to do the commentary, I'm all for it. Otherwise it looks like I'll be watching only half of the 2012 races.

I'd probably rather watch the speed coverage. Fuck Sky. Now we get to pay for Sky Sports, fucking bullshit.

The BBC had it so perfect, everything was just great. Why couldn't it have just gone to ITV? God dammit.

Its the ad situation I'm worried most about.
Its not like football, tennis or cricket where they are breaks in play to "naturally" fit some ads in.
F1 is constant action for nearly 2 hours. No way Sky will show its uninterrupted.

Well I lost interest in cricket entirely once I was unable to watch it live on TV, and I have no doubt that after 20 years of watching F1, this will kill my interest in that too.

Very surprising decision though, 1) given the speed at which thus has happened, and 2) given what Bernie has been saying about F1 in no way wanting to go behind a pay wall. I can only assume that this indicates that he'll step down at the end of the year (or next).

Really interested to hear the teams' reaction to this though. I can't imagine it will help concorde negotiations.

Not saying too much, pretty miffed about it but basically said it came down to the BBC not being able to afford it.

Also, I asked Ecclestone if he mourned the loss of free to air coverage of every F1 race. He said: "it was not us who made that decision".
Bollocks.
