F1 on a sky pay channel is so fucked up, fucking shit I only have freeview :/

This isn't sharing, more like handing over to sky and bbc getting the scraps.

Whitmarsh said moves to take F1 off free-to-air could be viewed as a breach of the Concorde Agreement, with him claiming that there were clauses in the deal that ties the teams, Ecclestone and the FIA together that guarantees the sport's broadcast platform.

Please let there be some sort of breach in the contract. Please reverse the decision. No company will ever be able to replicate the BBC broadcast, especially the presenters Jake, Eddie, DC and Brundle. This is BULLSHIT

FYI - from the other media forums I've been reading it's the BBC that has been the primary motivator to cut down on their coverage - the non F1ers got antsy when they saw how much BBC were spending on the coverage - so Bernie had to put the rest of the races on somewhere.. Couldnt exactly do ITV could they?

This.

I think it's pretty likely that it was more to do with the BBC wanting to cut down that Sky coming in with some evil plan to steal F1 coverage.

"It is not a bloke or two blokes with a tennis racket and a pair of plimsolls with zero cost. It is a very, very expensive sport. The best thing we can do for fans, whether they want to come to the races or want to watch it on TV, is to reduce the cost of the sport without spoiling the show."

Taking it away from the BBC = spoiling the show.

Breakaway series in 2013, put it on the bbc, everyone wins. Except bernie and sky :)

Actually, I was thinking whether we could all just pretend the races that aren't shown on the BBC don't happen. Sure, it's a shorter season, but it's a better one!

This sucks, if BBC wanted to reduce costs i would've been ok with some sharing deal between BBC and ITV/C4 but to hide 1/2 the races behind a paywall fucking sucks :/

It's super for F1 - it will mean a lot more coverage for the sport

Anyone who might have access to Sky Sports, will by default have access to the BBC due to the license fee.

So explain to me how more people will be watching F1? They can't watch the Sky Sports coverage unless they have the BBC coverage.

The races that are shown on both Sky and the BBC, I hope and pray that the viewing numbers are massively skewed towards the BBC.

I can't wait to hear Eddie, he will not be happy.

They will be. Pretty much everyone has access to BBC. Can't say the same for Sky.

Plus everyone knows the BBC coverage will be far superior.

I assume they are thinking that all the people watching Sky Sports for the football will be exposed to alot more F1 related stuff on Sky Sports news (as at the moment Sky Sports rarely even acknowledge that it exists) and F1 will therefore gain more fans.

I see, but in reality that's not going to happen. Overall viewing numbers will go down. Do they really think everyone who watches the full season is going to migrate to Sky Sports? I'd be surprised if more than 5% did.

My only hope is that SKY hire everyone from the BBC to do their coverage as well, but I highly doubt it. They'll probably sign Legard to do the commentary.

Woke up to hear the news. Not surprised to hear the news, I think everyone honestly knew F1 on the BBC wouldn't last long until the the lobbying against it's costs started.

I was hoping to end my Sky Sports subscription soon but that dream is over.

Honestly, if they used Jake/DC/EJ/Brundle it would be pretty tolerable. Hell, enjoyable, even.

It won't happen though.

if any BBC people try to polish up this mess, its because they are worried about their job. #Strike

This is terrible news. Im actually in a daze. All of the team are as shocked as the wonderful F1 fans.

Now everyone will understand why this twitter account is not connected to the BBC website. #SickFeeling

This is what really matters. I wouldn't complain if they'd get the BBC team.

Well Jake won't be going anywhere. He's not going to trade the 2012 Olympics for F1 on Sky.

What makes this worse for me is that I watch BBC news in the morning and see them wasting money by sending reporters half way across the country to do some shit news report on moths, ping pong or bees. EVERY MORNING. they say they need to save money well fucking drop the things with shit viewing figures

So this means BBC4 stays? Seriously fuck this decision. I've got sky but I loved it ad-free on BBC and the awesome team. Do people think Sky will dedicate 3/4 hours every Sunday for the whole programme? Hell no.

Don't fuck with BBC4, it is the most worthwhile BBC channel.

They need to drop some of their billions of radio stations and BBC3. That was the original cost savings plan, but the management didn't have the balls to go through with it. Plus local news is shit everywhere except in major cities where there is actual news to report, not something about a cow in the middle of a road...

Aww, hell no. Well at least I have got my membership to thebox.bz sorted out...

I don't even have SKY and I can't afford to pay for SKY plus Skysports. So i'm fucked like alot of people who care about the sport and want to watch it live, not some bullshit second hand highlights programe.

Agreed one of the best channels on TV. My comment on BBC One earlier in this thread caused some anger but if you want to see the BBC at it's best watch BBC 4.

I don't think BBC Sport could cut any of it's programs to increase it's budget internally so to afford F1 the BBC would have to cut in some other areas. I do wonder why we still have BBC 3, in all it's existence the only worthwhile program it has produced is our war which would;ve done much better on the 9:00 pm slot on BBC One or Two.

Funnily enough, I was tuning my mother's TV the other day and was utterly astonished at how many BBC radio channels there were. I can't imagine most of them get much in the way of listeners.

It wont last 6 years. Its currently the most popular its been in 10+ years and they still cut half of it. Once the ratings go down because its a disjointed mess of half a season they will question why they spend all this money on something people dont watch, then sky will be left to show it alone.

Pretty much. Nobody is going to support watching half a season. It's retarded.

To be honest, I don't understand why they don't just drop it entirely. At least it's less confusing then.

Radio is cheap and collectively it has an audience of 10+ million

there's a lot of stations so the bbc can tick the "something for everyone" box

It's strange. This news combined with this weekend being Hungary, and I can already feel myself not really giving a fuck about the race.
