The Irony of Xbox Hardware in 20251

Isn't it extremely ironic that these last two years when Phil Spencer put in the work and made it happen with Japanese developers in regards to de facto exclusives Sony used to get that now are also on Xbox, we now see first party software threw in the towel and went multiplatform?

It's so hilariously sad that Xbox gamers are finally getting a near full breadth of Japanese games (I say near because Falcom is still a holdout)that skipped the entire Xbox One generation, and the moment this massive third party gap gets corrected we see Microsoft throw in the towel with their own software.

This is why it makes me think Spencer had nothing to do with their multi-platform strategy. He clearly put in the work to make the Xbox line up as strong as can be, but then his boss forced him to give up with his own software.

Thread title typo. Nice!!

Yes. I'm from the future. And yes, in 20251 every living being is an Xbox.

mods don't change the title please. Jokes about time travel will be way better than console war drive bys

I've had far too many beers to know what the hell you're talking about willus
Phil Spencer finally got Japanese third parties fully on board with Xbox and filled a huge JRPG hole.

The moment Phil FINALLY was able to get these games on Xbox, they give up on Xbox and release their own games on ps5.

100%

Satya Nadella issued insane targets for console and game sales off the back of Starfield, hence all the hype from the influencers for the game.

Phil failed to reach those targets, so Microsoft Gaming was forced to go third party whether Phil liked it or not. That Activision merger had to be funded one way or another.

I agree with the most of what was said, but I would argue against the idea that going multi platform is "throwing in the towel." They are now developing for a larger audience.

I don't really understand what work we're talking about. To have some japanese games after the other plateforms, it was always the case. Is that supposed to be something ambitious to "work" to get some old games port ?

They had one japanese studio, they tried to shut it off and an other publisher managed to save it.

Managing studios and releases is actually the hard work and Spencer has been terrible at it for more than 10 years.

Nah they threw in the towel, they finally came to realise that they would never come close to matching Playstation and the economics of leaving that many sales on the table just didn't make financial sense

If Xbox manages to keep producing hardware in 20251, i think their ok puting their software on the rival platform 18k years ago.

Threw in the towel to what exactly? That claim seems like it should be qualified in order to make any sense. Again, they are now developing for a larger audience.

They must have known releasing absolutely everything on PS5 would kill their console sales.

They knew this and did it anyway.

They conceded the console war, they threw in the towel.

It sounds like you got caught up in the going multiplatform fud. They have said one more console generation so lets see how it goes.

A beginning is a very delicate time. Know then, that it is the year 20251. The known universe is ruled by the Padisha Emperor Satya IV, my father. In this time, the most precious substance in the Universe is the Xbox melange. The Xbox extends life. The Xbox expands consciousness. The Xbox is vital to space travel. The Xbox Guild and its navigators, who the Xbox has mutated over four-thousand years, use the orange Xbox gas, which gives them the ability to fold space. That is, travel to any part of the Universe without moving. Oh yes, I forgot to tell you. The Xbox exists on only one planet in the entire Universe. A desolate, dry planet with vast deserts. Hidden away within the rocks of these deserts are a people known as the Jezmen, who have long held a prophecy, that a man would come, a messiah, who would lead them to true freedom.

But you see, the statement I'm pushing back on is revolving around Xbox's first party software. Read the OP again and you will see why their console hardware performance is irrelevant to my comments.

And that's precisely what I'm referring to.

In order to make all their games available on PlayStation they had to throw in the towel in the console war.

Selling subsidised hardware no longer becomes viable once you give people very little reason to buy games for it.

They knew this before they made the decision to go full third party, knowing that it would kill off any chance of Xbox consoles continuing to sell millions… and look what happened.

Weird, because a minute ago you said this.
They conceded the console war, they threw in the towel.
You are referring to the "console war" which is their hardware business, not their first party software. Their first party software has been developing their games for devices outside of their console ecosystem for nearly a decade now.

Waiting for the Xbox full screen experience to come to my main PC.
The console itself is over unless they release some super powerful beats the pants off my PC in a compact silent future box.
I'd pour one out for the Xbox except I'm still using PC Gamepass. Brand isn't completely dead yet.
Like a Florida hanging chad, it's still here and being counted.

I am with you on all your points, but WTF is "A Florida hanging Chad" 🤣

Not with those people making the decisions over the last decade or so. Yet they will still be the ones at the helm for whatever their next offering is.

here's the short version. The 2000 Bush vs Gore election had some controversy over ballot cards that had semi complete punches through the hole and they called them "hanging chads" and there was a lot of controversy over counting these as votes even though the paper don't fully get punched. Allowing them to be counted is what led to bush winning Florida and the presidency if I am remembering correctly. I don't know I was only 12 at the time.
