The Last of Us Part II announced

They could have, but there would have been too much disappointment surrounding the reveal if they weren't in it, look at the excitement once the characters are revealed, people have been dying for this.

Let's be real, people will go nuts not matter what ND reveals. If it weren't Joel and Ellie in the trailer, there would be pages and pages of discussion and insane theories about who the new characters are and what they're doing.

Wait, is this game already in development for 2 1/2 years?

They said very early development. And towards the end of Uncharted 4 they said they had "all hands on deck" for it (U4), and they are over 300 employees. It's not likely this is far in development at all. It's gonna be a two year wait at the minimum I think, especially since it's likely a good chunk of the team is working on the U4 expansion.

Kinda bummed that we don't have a choice of playing as Joel . As someone getting old and with a niece around the same age, I can relate to him way more.
And I can relate to Ellie way more than Joel so I'm pretty damned happy. TLoU didn't need a sequel but I'm really happy that we're getting one. Yes, the original story was amazing and could have been self-contained, but I'm more than interested in what happened to Ellie and Joel after the first game. I don't know that I would have been nearly as excited about a sequel without them.

My biggest concern is the gameplay. I really hope that is similar to the original. After U4, a game that was beautiful and I liked the story, I felt that there was much less actual gameplay than I remembered in earlier Uncharted games and a lot more watching stuff happen. I'm not against that sort of thing usually but I didn't expect that in that series. So, I really hope this sequel maintains the incredible story-telling that ND can do but doesn't sacrifice the visceral gameplay that we loved in the first game. This is probably not going to be an issue since the same people that made the original are back for this one.

And honestly, give me listening mode. TLoU was scary as shit and listening mode helped my ass get through.

Wait, is this game already in development for 2 1/2 years?

Neil said that plenty of ideas were gestated after TLoU came out. New IP, sequel with Ellie/Joel, sequel with different characters, etc.

But seems like internally during Uncharted 4's development they've landed on an idea they're going to go ahead with and picked up the pieces put on hold to go ahead with a sequel.

Probably like early gestation of the idea. Don't think it's in active development yet, seeing as how the team seems busy with a pretty hefty UC4 DLC.

I don't think the whole studio is on The Lost Legacy, it's being written and directed by people who aren't gonna have those positions on Last of Us 2. Although I'm sure the LoU2 team is smaller at the moment, but then the people working on Lost Legacy will come over to work on it once that's wrapped up.

They copypasted Elena's face. I hope her design isn't final, it's a bit disappointing. Joel being in kinda sucks. I hope he dies at the beginning.
lol bollocks

She looks more like Ashley Johnson. And it makes absolutely sense.
And Joe is the greatest ever.

They probably had concepts and ideas on what they wanted the story to be awhile ago but as far as actual development I see you being right on this. It's still very early and going by the panel yesterday we are in for a long wait.

I like that it's part 2 rather than a sequel. Feel like it drops some of the sequel stigma for me, and frames it more as another episode of these characters.

But still disappointed it's not a new IP personally.

Id love Naughty Dog to not work on a zombie post apocalyptic game. Something that felt as grounded and realistic as No Country For Old Men. Just me, though.

To be quite honest I am way more excited fot Chloe and Nadine. Honestly that made the show for me.

Just played Left Behind finally on the Pro.

Been saving it forever, the trailer got me to boot it up.

Finished it in one sitting. Short but so sweet. Naughty Dog is so damned good.

That's why i started this whole discussion saying how much i hate this kind of (expected by now) fan service, and find it exhausting.

Also this.

But yeah, i've made my point, not trying to rain on anyone's parade, so i'll leave it here.

What was up with Shawn Layden's opening for this announcement btw? He's usually so collected, but he was stuttering and stumbling through that. Maybe he was just as hyped as everybody else. Great trailer.

My thought is that Joel and Ellie were away from this place (which is likely the settlement that they're staying in) that Ellie is playing the guitar in. They were either attacked and that's why Ellie is bleeding, then they get back and find out that the camp has been ransacked by the remnants of the fireflies (led by the main villain) and everyone they knew is dead.

The reason Ellie is there before Joel is that she rushed ahead once she realized something was wrong, and maybe Joel was checking around for survivors.

The reason the guitar is there is because it's their camp.

Another reason that Ellie might be bleeding is that in her haste to get back to the camp, she tripped and cut her forehead.

In any case, I think it's awesome that this trailer has already sparked so much discussion. Just goes to show how much people are interested in this story.

Oh i get that, which in itself is just an unfortunate reality of videogames production, but i still maintain that LoU and ND had enough of a clout to where you could've had a LoU2 set somewhere else within that world, and leave those characters alone to their really good ending.
But before someone comes to tell me that i can't know better and that they had more to tell etc etc, we've had this discussion multiple times in the past, and it feels especially pointless to have now, so people can enjoy their reunion with these characters, personally i'm deeply disappointed, but i understand why i am in the minority on this; however i don't see THAT specific choice as a marketing necessity in the same way a more general sequel in the franchise was.

In the panel yesterday Druckmann said TLOU IS Joel and Ellie in his mind. So this new character stuff is a non-starter. He is doing exactly what he wants to do.

I think the Firefly sign in the beginning means it is a Firefly outpost

Maybe the guitar was from someone there and she finds it and stars playing

Love their "Trust us" response.

I can't abide the insufferable levels of "Let me tell you how you should really do it" that permeates society these days.

Everyone is a Monday morning quarterback expert on everything.

You like what these guys do? Then, hell yeah, trust 'em.

I don't think people are really listening to the lyrics Ellie sang in the trailer, It's not too far fetched to think she did indeed kill everyone there also her words at the end.

I think Joel is trying to get her on a straight patch before it's too late.

Isn't there more than one team though?

It doesn't really work like that I don't think. There are certain disciplines within the studio that can move off a project earlier than others, after which they can kickstart another project while the main force is still busy with the earlier project. But there aren't 2 distinct teams that can both handle a full production. That would be an astounding waste of resources.

People really think Ellie would kill Joel because of his lie? Lol fucking hell. The ending of the first game seemed to imply that deep down Ellie knows. She's willing to live with being lied to, and Joel is willing to live with lying.

Btw, wasn't there a performance that Neil directed a couple years ago with Ashley and Troy acting out an extended scene where Ellie knows that Joel lied?

Yep. Pretty much my reading too. The song's lyrics suggest she knows she's a shitty person, just like Tess did - but unlike Joel she can't just "find something to keep fighting for".

Game development sounds so easy when you said it like that. They can't just make new characters out of the blue. They probably went through hundreds if not thousand of concepts and character ideas for the game. Maybe they felt like there a story that they could expand on for Ellie. I suggest you watch the panel yesterday and Neil will tell you exactly why they decided to go this route.

So she's confirmed main character. Still doesn't rule out Joel killing her to save his own ass near the end. I'm imagining the OT right now.

Left behind had around half the studio on it back in 2014, while the rest of the team were working away on UC4. Most of that team jumped on Uc4 after Left Behind shipped. I assume the same is happening here, but with the directors on Lost Legacy and maybe a few others staying behind and beginning pre-production on ND's next project.

I think we've established that it's plausible, biologically, for her voice to remain largely unchanged. Does it have to change just because you've got it stuck in your head that it should change?

Like, I mean... Think about what you're saying here for a second. You just criticized the voice actress for not adjusting her voice, unlike Troy. And yet, the voice actress is a 33 year old woman, so if anything, her voice should sound too old. And yet, here you are, complaining that a 33 year old woman's voice sounds too "cute" and young.

I don't know, opinions are great and all, but this one's a bit weird.

You need to take all that you've said back, pretty much. She has the range to sound more mature. Does she sound 14 years old in TLoU pt. I? Maybe not. But when that voice is established as the baseline "14 year old Ellie voice," they need to make 19 year old, grizzled and battered Ellie sound mature in comparison. You're on the losing side of this one, bud.

No he's not and they don't have to do anything. Human voices change at varying rates and this is no different. Get off your high horse, you're spewing opinion as fact.

It's rather amusing to see the number of commenters on articles correcting websites who keep reporting on the game as "The Last of Us 2"

Kotaku in particular.

Really hyped for this!
