The Last of Us Part II announced

its naughty dogs engine..so an updated version of the same engine that powered U4.

They only have one engine. He just means the engine has been updated since Uncharted 4.

The Lost Legacy already looked updated with betetr skin shader textures, animations, cloth physics etc... Maybe that is why it is a standalone add-on (like Infamous First Light) because it doesn't share the same exact engine code from Uncharted 4 because it was a little updated.
It doesn't surprise me if Naughty Dog could achieve a bigger upgrade with The Last Of Us Part II.

TLOU with new characters wouldn't have made any sense in my opinion. Might as well go for something completely new at that point.

I'm very intrigued to see where Ellie and Joel's story leads, even if a sequel wasn't necessary given how part 1 ended.

I feel like the guy in the trailer being Joel is a dead giveaway. I'm still not sure why people are saying he doesn't sound like Joel but he does to me... even calling her kiddo.
It absolutely is Joel. Same beard, hair, everything. That's even Troy doing the exact same voice. In fact, everything is so identical after a five year gap that I'm kinda buying into the "ghost" theory. Or they just wanted to make sure people recognize him.

People are going to be in for a shock when they remember they can't swing across chasms with ropes and climb up waterfalls in TLOU and instead have to deal with God awful enemy design to top it off.

Like UC4 was finally an Uncharted game with great gunplay, cool level design and no bullet sponges and TLOU 2 is coming here to fuck things up again. Boy oh boy can't wait to toss my rope and platforming skills in for crouch walking and hilarious bullet sponges!

Who knows, maybe Naughty Dog will surprise me and create a zombie game with actually engaging zombie enemies this time. Or maybe they'll double down on brain dead puzzles like the first game and terrible pacing like UC4 and Left Behind. Who knows!
Man, you're really upset about a game that no one is forcing you to play.

God fucking damn it I'm so pissed. Why does everything need a sequel, and I just know, I just KNOW, they're going to give into fan demand and do retcon what I think was one of the best endings in videogames because most people didn't like it. And the worst part? I'm mad at myself because I got kind of hype at that song. I got really hype when she started playing god damn it.

I was thinking that too. Young Ellie voice in full effect. They need to nail the aging of her voice to make this cohesive.

A woman's voice doesn't change that much after 14 or so. Especially not by 19, and definitely not when Ellie's VA already had a more adult sounding voice for her in the first game.

Wasn't a big fan of the first game, way too drawn out, didn't like Ellie, didn't like all the padding, repetitive junk with ladders, crates, etc. There was greatness there, but like with Uncharted 4 it feels like they just don't know when to reel it in and establish some actual focus.

So hopefully they pace the next one better and Ellie seems like she'll be pretty cool this time. I'm excited with a dash of caution. I enjoyed the tone of this trailer and I like how Ellie looks.

Wait, you were disappointed by both Last of Us and UC4? Two of the best games I have played in over 20 years of gaming...how dare you!
On the bright side at least I know I can safely ignore your opinions on games from now on.

you're joking, right? women would pay good money to keep their voices the same as when they were 14 for their whole lives.

Chill out. If it bothers you so much, you can pretend like this game doesn't exist. For the rest of us, it's exciting to come back to the universe and see what's next.

"Updated engine for PS4".

This comment stuck out to me. So they're using the Last of Us Engine with a some new bells and whistles to take advantage of the PS4?

I always assumed they would just use the Uncharted 4 engine.

U4 ran an on their upgraded PS3 engine. Most games you see today were created on an engine from a previous generation and then heavily upgraded. ND noted that they went through a lot of hell creating that engine from the ground up on the PS3, so there was no reason to throw it away when they could just update it. As a similar example, God of War 3 ran on a heavily modified Kinetica (PS2) engine.

I sense a similar tonal shift/parallel in the same vein Godfather Pt. II took its story actually. The first very much was a showcase of love which by the end was strained by vengeance, while the second was consumed by it and illustrated how its main character ate away at his humanity as a result. In which case, that is, would almost literally make TLOU more the The Godfather of video games, lol.

first of all, 'we' includes me because i'm the one that brought it up. second, what's your definition of how a voice "sounds" and how is that different than vocal range?

Well, if you want me to explain...

Women usually go through puberty around 10-12 years old or so. Safe to say, at 14-15 Ellie's coming up right at the tail-end when the game takes place, so she's well past the chipmunk phase. Her voice, for all intents and purposes, could have plausibly been mature already.

As women get older though, they lose vocal range. Meaning that they can't hit the high notes that well anymore. Kinda foggy on the exact details of that, but safe to say is that the vocal range they are more comfortable with becomes narrower as they age.

But that's over the course of a life-time, not from 15 -> 19. So, plausibly, she could have nigh-on the exact same voice at 19 as she had at 14.

But that aside, why are you complaining? I remember hearing complaints from people that Ellie sounded like a 30 year old back when the game released. Who gives a shit?

can you imagine strangling someone while she makes those cute grunting noises

Hmm? Have you played The Last of Us? Those grunting noises didn't exactly strike me as "cute", nor have I ever heard a 19 year old "grunt" in that way and though "well, that sure sounds like a mature grunt".

It was ok. You wouldn't be missing much by just watching a video of the cutscenes on YouTube.

This thread is literally over 50 pages of people salivating for the sequel to that game you are being so dismissive about. Don't be selfish and let people find out themselves if they fall into the majority camp who loved the game.

Is Death Stranding 2017?

Would be an interesting battle between Death Stranding and Last of Us P2 if it comes down to them in a GOTY battle :P

all i'm saying is, she should change her voice a little to make it deeper overall.

Hmm, so now we're discussing what teen girls should sound like when you strangle them.

Carry on.
when THEY do the strangling

I liked Uncharted 4 a lot but I thought the pacing was terrible, there's a lot of padding, walk and talk, etc. If it were tighter and better edited it would have been amazing.

all i'm saying is, she should change her voice a little to make it deeper overall.

I think we've established that it's plausible, biologically, for her voice to remain largely unchanged. Does it have to change just because you've got it stuck in your head that it should change?

Like, I mean... Think about what you're saying here for a second. You just criticized the voice actress for not adjusting her voice, unlike Troy. And yet, the voice actress is a 33 year old woman, so if anything, her voice should sound too old. And yet, here you are, complaining that a 33 year old woman's voice sounds too "cute" and young.

I don't know, opinions are great and all, but this one's a bit weird.

I really hope they continue the Ish letters story. Would be pretty freaking awesome if he was like a secret character you can find who helps you.

The last thing we need is fan service in TLoU II

Ish is probably dead considering you don't even know when that note was written. Also considering Tommy's place is in the middle of the country, and Ish was in Pittsburgh, it would be insane to run into him.

I'm excited for the game, but come on people, are we pretending that this is not the dumbest, laziest possible name for a sequel to 'The Last of Us' ? It reeks so deeply of marketing suits trying to capitalize on brand recognition and a developer stating "we have no choice but to turn this thing into another paycheck so let's put in the minimum intellectual effort necessary to do so." The name actively highlights the fact that the original game was intended as a single closed loop but has now been extended with another "part."

The original game was so amazing in large part because it did convey a sense of narrative finality, you felt as though you were taking part in a tragic story arc that conveyed a sincere respect for both the characters and the player as part of a real experience. The idea of throwing a "part 2" onto the end of the story feels incredibly exploitative and cheapens the sincerity of the original experience in a way that really bothers me. I guess I must be taking crazy pills, because it doesn't seem to be bothering anyone else.

OK, the pacing thing I can see people being disappointed by, even though I was fine with it. Probably because I enjoy 'walking simulators' and loved taking in the scenery and atmosphere in UC4. Felt like I was trekking those locations and it felt more adventurous than previous Uncharteds to me.

Anyway, I was half joking when I said I was going to ignore your opinions on games. Besides you have redeemed yourself by saying you liked UC4 a lot :)

looks like i'll need to buy a PS4 again. can't wait for this! hopefully by the time this comes out there will be a PS4 Pro Slim. Maybe I'll just wait for the inevitable PS5 remastered version. TLOU was one of my favourite PS exclusives of all time. I really want to play it now :(

Eh, to me, the name comes off as pretentious and egotistical if anything.

Fuck yea, sequel to one of my favorite games of all time. Gonna replay it and Left Behind this week. I was kinda into the idea of different characters with each sequel in a different part of the world but Ellie as the protagonist is just fine. Oh, and please don't kill Joel Ellie

i like the title. I prefer it to The Last of Us 2 or The Last of Us: American Dreams (using the comic name as an example). as long as the story and gameplay is good i really don't care what it's called tbh. let's just hope for an enjoyable game.

i like the idea of ellie as the main character. hopefully we get to play as her throughout most of the game instead of joel. i have a feeling he won't make it to the end of the game. probably gonna get killed off.

Pretentious. Egotistical.

I'd really love for you to clarify what exactly that means in this context. What undeserved value are they attaching to the name The Last of Us by name its sequel "Part II", how does that make them self-absorbed, and what does a non-pretentious/non-egotistical title look like to you?

Well, the first thing that springs to mind is that you're attributing intentions to people on the basis of pre-conceived notions. Neil Druckmann has come out and said that he wouldn't be making a sequel if he didn't have a great idea to work with; and he did make the good point that he's actually making it harder on himself by making a direct sequel, seeing as how expectations will be higher, and he then went on to say that that shows how sure he is about the idea he's working on.

Now, you can choose not to believe him, I guess? But why would you?

Eh, to me, the name comes off as pretentious and egotistical if anything.

Interesting, do you mind explaining howso? The original game was so hugely successful that I find it hard to think of how anything associated could be pretentious or egotistical. When you win every GOTY award and go down in record as the "game of a generation" there's not really much room left for pretense or ego, any perceived arrogance seems more like fact at that point.

i don't know why you're making it seem like i'm boycotting the game because of this. it's just a detail i would've liked. and yeah, Ashley's normal speaking voice does sound young and immature, probably a reason she was chosen for Ellie
