The Last of Us Part II announced

So apparently Bruce Straely(Game Director of The Last of Us, Uncharted 4) isn't even involved with this game at all

Druckmann finally killed off the last remaining rival to be King of Naughty Dog

This...is actually somewhat concerning. Hopefully, Druckmann handles it well on his own.

Oh shit really? That explains the focus on the hands then.

Yes if you check out the Uncharted Lost Legacy panel, Claudia Black talks about how she walks her fingers on Nolan during the hotel scene on the bed, and they had to have a conference to determine if they could keep it in the game because it might take too long to animate. Then they mention that they can do fingers now.

I literally thought that Ellie was imagining the cheers to her guitar playing, adding to the sense of derangement.

Oh, it's being shown to a live audience, gotcha!

TLOU has more complex mechanics, systems and level design than all Uncharted games put together.

Uh, definitely untrue. Uncharted has verticality, mobility. Even in Uncharted 3, playing as Nate having to aim while on palettes floating on the sea, that kind of subtle level design is not present in TLOU.

Yeah, but from what they explain, it still sounds pretty basic. One marker on the index, one on thumb and one on pinkie finger. So i'd imagine something as sophisticated as that guitar playing still must take some solid animator effort in the end.

Trailer had me shaking. It has gotta be so stressful on the team to have to make a sequel to the best game of all time. Druckmann sounded very reassuring on the panel though.

No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No.

Joel and Ellie's story was done, they had their ending.

Um, wat?

Ellie was one of if not the only hope for a cure for humanity... her story isn't done at all.

I have a feeling Joel is dead

Er... TLoU was renowned for a lot of things, but in terms of gameplay and level design, UC series wins - TLoU takes a lot of other things though - narrative, characters, etc..

That whole sequence is really impressive. The animation is up there with Hollywood CGI. Reminds me of the Robocop reboot.

It's seriously impressive.

I cannot stand animating hands so anything that makes that process quick is A-ok with me. All mocap requires extensive touching up by the animator.

Dear Abby, GAF

I am not trolling but I could not care less about this series if I tried and it bothers me. I have tried to play TLoU 5+ times but stopped less than a hour in because I realized I did not give a shit about any part of the game or anyone in it. Help me. What am I not seeing?

Push through and finish it. The start of the game is extremely slow and not all that interesting.

The game really excels in the 2nd act, the third act is even better. Don't know what to say. I see people say "just couldn't get into it" so many times. Its honestly the only game Ive ever played through 5+ times and I've been gaming since Atari 2600...

Game starts slow. It really picked up for me once you leave Boston, which is a couple hours in.

Considering the game is about 15 hours, that's like stopping halfway through the first chapter of a book and saying you don't give a shit about the character or story

The game builds up slow in the beginning to introduce the world, characters, and tone.

So question about the story.

It looked like they were at a Firefly camp where someone, presumably Ellie, had killed a bunch of people. She says that she wants to hunt them all down and kill them and I'm assuming she's again referring to the Fireflys. The way Joel says, 'Are you sure you really want to do this kiddo?' make me think it might be part of his big lie from last game where he said they had been unsuccessful at curing the infection. Maybe he even had to elaborate more on it as she got older and began asking more questions?

If you do not like it, you do not like.
There is no reason for you to be ashamed and of course no reason for us to blame you.
For example: I do not like The Witcher 3 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It is how it is.

If the Fireflies came looking for revenge, to her it would seem like an unprovoked attack.

Which is pretty fucked up and tragic if Ellie is driven to seek revenge and kill because Joel is too much of a coward to tell her the truth.

So we're talking, what, a mid 2018 release considering Uncharted 4 was a year ago?
That's what I thought at first, but the fact that Shawn Layden and Neil kept emphasizing on very early in development makes me believe we will see it in September 2018 at the earliest. Also, Uncharted 4 released a year ago? What? It was just half a year, bruh. :P

By the way, did anyone at the panel mention anything about this trailer? Is it running real time?

I took it as that Joel and Ellie had spent the past 5 years living in that place before a bunch of fireflies attacked and killed the inhabitants (though Joel and Ellie lived obviously). Now Ellie is going to avenge them by hunting down the fireflies. Of course, your interpretation makes sense too. Regardless I'm sure Ellie is going to find out she was lied to.

I was under the impression she already knew at the end of TLOU but just accepted it.

She knows he's lying, but that doesn't mean she knows what happened. She could probably guess at some things, but she doesn't know that Joel killed Marlene in cold blood, for example.

So, Naughty Dog announces a sequel to a game was tied up in a way that did not at all justify a sequel and an addon to a game in a franchise that has now been declared "done" twice over. As someone who enjoys their work but has found it become increasingly stale lately I don't find myself nearly as positive about the PSX announcements as everyone else seems to be. It's so frustrating to watch all of the most talented development studios in the world continue recycling the same games and being praised for it rather than being called out for lack of innovation / ambition; imagine what Naughty Dog could do if they took their talents and applied them to another genre instead of simply extending their existing work forever. I would love to know how much pressure they're under from Sony to "play it safe" since the Uncharted series blew up. On the other hand, the response seems to be overwhelmingly positive, so obviously I must be in the minority.

Fuuuuuuck it's going to be so painful when Ellie finds out about Joel lying.

I guess that is comparable. It's crazy because I don't generally play Indie games which eliminates a few critical darlings from last year yet, I dunno why but I feel bad for not liking this game for some reason...

You dont think that maybe even at one point she finds out about it and hold a bit of a grudge? Remember the girl Joel killed was her friend and a friend of her moms. I dunno. I think its a possible plot point.

finds out what? she knows the moment joel says what he says that it's not the whole story. but, because she's come to love & trust him, whatever might've gone down, she accepts his call. the end...

if you can't wrap your head around this, i don't know what to tell you. it's not complicated. it's fundamentally a game about 2 people coming to love, trust in, & depend on each other, for better or worse, whatever's going on around them...

Which is pretty fucked up and tragic if Ellie is driven to seek revenge and kill because Joel is too much of a coward to tell her the truth.

She already knows the truth.

Obviously something else has happened:

* She has been raped by "evil gang".
* The fireflies either created the virus or were working on making it worse.
* She is going to wipe out all tattoo artists in the world for messing her arm up so much.

Which will it be? Almost certainly the second one, with the third one as post launch DLC.

So, Naughty Dog announces a sequel to a game was tied up in a way that did not at all justify a sequel and an addon to a game in a franchise that has now been declared "done" twice over. It's really impressive how much they're willing to bet it all on trying new things and innovating considering how much profit they've made on their releases over the past decade. What could possibly be next for them, Last of Us 2 DLC and Uncharted 5? Only time will tell!

Well they did announce the UC4 dlc months before it's release

I was under the impression she already knew at the end of TLOU but just accepted it.

Yeah you're right, after waking up in a the back of a car wearing a hospital gown she would have put together the pieces. That said I doubt she would approve of what transpired with Marlene.
