I think pretty much everyone expected this to open big. There's no way it wouldn't. Too much hype and credibility gained from the first game, as well as people avoiding spoilers.
However, we'll see if it behaves like FF7R. Which people were also trying to throw in others' faces who criticized the game's story changes from the OG game. It sold 3.5M in the first week, but within a week or two was off of every Top 10 list in every reported country. Legs are important. Especially to an expensive game like this one.

$60×4M=$240M USD gross. Even if this cost as much as GTAV to make and market, its still going to turn a sizeable profit once it hits 5 million.
The only problem here is that Ghosts of Tsushima is releasing too close to TLoU2 and the established IP is going to cause problems for the new one.

Sold-through and shipped are two different things.
Not downplaying FFVIIR success, just pointing out the difference as TLOU2 number is a number sold-through to consumers, not retailers (shipped)

I mean, to say ONLY, sure. But there's definitely truth to that IMO. The original game was beloved by many, so of course the sequel is going to sell just as well if not more so. Hardcore fans avoided leaks and were all in. Some saw the leaks and preordered as a result of curiosity because of all the attention. I'm sure there are other paths as well. Congrats to ND regardless!
