I played on Normal mode and found this game to be hard in many places... Maybe I'm just a bad gamer :p

Same here.

Feel more tension because you don't know if there are 4 monsters/enemies behind the wall and want to eat your face. :p

I think that just likely leads to death in my case, which results with unnecessary repetition, which in turn ruins the atmosphere. That's why I'm playing with listen mode on again.

FWIW, I had a lot more fun playing with Listen Mode on than with it off. With it on I was planning my attacks and taking my time taking down the enemies one by one silently without getting caught. When I ran my Survivor run and had to play with it off I ended up just bullrushing most encounters.

I just remembered how much fun i had using the bow in the singleplayer. Getting pretty hyped to go through this again. Nothing like the tension of shooter a clicker in the back of the head with your last arrow and praying it doesn't snap, so you can reuse it.

I think without listen mode the game is much, much slower because you're relying on sound to plot your movements in the environments.

I haven't played the single player with listen mode, but for the multiplayer online it's a huge advantage.

Let me also say that my first playthrough was on Normal with Listen Mode on. I loved it. I had plenty of moments with high tension. I feel like a lot of people on GAF just assume we're all really skilled gamers or super observant or whatever and that's just not the case.

I got really good at the multiplayer. I was that guy who when playing with friends, whichever team I was on was the team that was going to win. I played a lot of the multiplayer alone, in pickup games and did great. So I'm not some goober who can't play the game.

Now that I've qualified myself (kind of unnecessarily anywhere but here) I will say once more that I believe people should play it on Normal and use Listen Mode all they want for their first run. Nobody should have to risk being up against a wall and grinding through repeated deaths because the game is too hard for them at first.

Let me use my 14 yr old cousin as an example. She plays games. Not just Candy Crush or whatever, but is what I'd call somewhere between casual and core. She got TLOU PS3 bundle earlier this year and asked what difficulty to play on. Before I could respond to her text, she started on Normal. The game was too hard for her. She got downtown and couldn't past the first area where Joel is really on his own. I had to send her links to YouTube guides and even then she struggled.

Games are just harder than a lot of us realize. Play on Normal. Nothing wrong with that. The game is so great I've played through Survivor + and am really excited for Grounded on my PS4 version. If I can get excited enough to replay it, I think others will too. Plus, you'll want to use listen mode in multiplayer anyway, so why not get used to it in single player?

IIRC, Joel also moves slower when the listen mode is on, which makes it easier to avoid alerting the clickers by accident. That's an additional bonus for me.

Amy has left ND? If this isn't true then surely a mod needs to do something about these people spreading FUD.

He's just making joke at Cyborg's expense like many of us have been doing but yes, Amy left Naughty Dog months ago, did you really not know that? As you say in a later post, there's now way to tell anymore.

So I'm thinking of getting this from the US PSN store because it's cheaper and uncensored.

I know how to do it, I just wanna know, is their absolutely NO drawbacks to buying it from the US PSN when I'm in the UK? Like, I won't be blocked from the multiplayer servers or anything right?

I wish the PS4 version was my first time playing it. Especially after all these months of seeing and hearing people hype it so much. It must be unbearably exciting.

I'm excited but Gaf hypes shit to the point that it can't be that good. So I keep myself in check and usually enjoy the games more.

True.

But this game really does live up to the hype, even GAF hype.

Unrelated: Why is it that gore is allowed in the SP of EU copies, but not in the MP? What is the reasoning behind this?

Wow. I'm over the multiplayer... I'm not the best player but shit, some of these people you meet... talking shit on the mics, thinking they're godlike and overconfident. It has totally put me off playing the multiplayer... I can't stand people like this, the fuck is wrong with people?

Never experienced that at all, but I normally played with 3 of my buddies all the time. It was one of my most enjoyable multiplayer experiences, probably ever.

I played normal with listen mode on first play through. I thought it was a challenge. Since then I've platnumed the game and all dlc. I can do with or without listen mode. I feel like its importance in mp is enough reason to get used to it in single player, but its to each their own.

I don't, as I'm thrilled to experience it again in a better form. If I had postponed playing the game, the story would probably have been spoiled for me months ago. I did postpone the second playthrough, when the rumors about the PS4 version began to circulate.

IMO listen mode seriously gimps the tension that the game creates. If anything, it completely removes the tension for me. Hearing enemies and not knowing where they are exactly can be terrifying.

The hype isn't exclusive to GAF. Read the reviews. It was one of the highest reviewed games on PlayStation 3, or any other console last gen for that matter. It is a very fun game. The story is great, it has some very unsettling moments, you meet some very interesting characters along your journey, see many different locals. Heck, I was even scared for some of it, especially when you are in dark areas.

This will be my first pre-order on PS4. Anyone know the last possible moment you can pre-order? Is it up until the day before release?

I had listen mode off when I played on PS3. But every once in a while, listen mode would turn on automatically for a few seconds when entering a new area.

Was that normal?

That was definitely not the case for me, when I played the game on normal mode with listen mode on. To each their own.

If you're playing for the first time, the game can be quite a challenge as it is... I'd recommend turning off listen mode only if you're pretty confident, or if you're not worried about getting frustrated. The great part about the Hard + No listen mode recommendation is you can turn listen mode back on whenever if it's a bit too much. But if you can hack it, I'd agree, no LM definitely adds a lot to the game.

Like others have said, mute and keep playing. I personally never had a problem with this. In fact when I first started some people said helpful hints like try not too sprint much, etc.

Yes. That was part of the campaign storyline, with game briefly showcasing to the player that Joel has clearly heard that trouble is ahead. ND did not want to make game unfair for users who are [foolishly] skipping cutscenes and jumping into new areas without knowing that something dangerous is coming.

A lot of ppl are saying turn off listen mode and turn the difficulty to hard. I didn't play that way and wouldn't have enjoyed myself playing that way. The style described with listening off and hard difficulty is if u want to play this as a SURVIVAL HORROR GAME.

I like my game a little more action, so if you're the same as me, don't turn off listen mode. Hard is all personal preference. Personally I don't play games for the challenge. Life is challenging enough.

I played Normal/No Listen mode, I thought it was a totally fine first experience, it was challenging in a couple of spots, never frustrating, didn't die very often, but always felt close to death, no complaints.

Will be getting this game for sure. Never played it before.

What settings should I play the game in? I usually don't reply games after I beat them.

I want the ultimate TLoU experience.

I know nothing about the game other than it is awesome.

Hm. I'm sure you'll want to replay the game once you finished.

I think all mode offer something.
Easy is fun, you can really go wild with the enemys and bomb them to bits because you have enough stuff to do it.
But its not that easy that the tension is gone completely.

Normal or Hard(if you're good) are probably best for the experience in line with the story. Encounters are very tense, but its not that hard that you get stuck in certain areas.

Survivor is for people who want a real challenge. I wouldn't recommend it for a first play through, though, because unless you're extremely good you'll die too often and it destorys the pacing a bit.

Ah. Thank you for clearing that up.

Played normal with listen mode on as well. Full on stealth can be fun but in this game where the story is so good that you want badly for the story to progress...its a little harder to play like that for me. Can make the game much slower pace than I'd like.

Hopefully they cut the annoying MP trophies.

mp is supposedly amazing though? it'd be a little different if mp sucks. ill be honest and say i never played tlou mp on ps3. are the trophies of the annoying variety (halo comes to mind) where you have to do super specific tasks that almost never happen or do they just come through natural progression of the mp?

No, I mean trophies like the DLC ones where you have to kill X amount of enemies of every map without dying. Anything that wouldn't come with simply playing the game is annoying (like Halo 3's MP achievements).

That's cool, man. Each to their own. We all play games for different reasons.

I enjoyed playing it how i think I would have handled it in real life (if real life had mutated fungus monsters and i had access to guns, lol), which is stealthily. Setting the difficulty to hard was to add a little realism in terms of what it takes to kill you and how many supplies you find.

I imagine for people who prefer this game being a little more action-orientated, normal difficulty would have been ideal due to the amount of ammo you get.

They take a ton of play time to get.

Well the online trophies is TLOU makes sense... it is finish all the MP campaign in Fireflies faction and the other is finish all the MP campaign in the Hunters faction.

When you reach both side of the MP campaign you will have all the others easy MP trophies for sure.

Me too. Well it's a region free version the US, so if you bought the disc you'd be fine, but I'm going digital too. So much easier on ps4, and all integrated. Multiplayer should be ok, and will use local servers. It is literally ONLY the DLC weapons you have to buy again, a few quid well spent.. Enjoy, see you there

Yeah listen mode is better off.

Oh and the gym area that everyone hates

I just used the scope on the rifle to shoot those things on its body. It did take a long time but I didn't waste many bullets :)

The annoying trophies being referenced are the dlc ones. They were all get x kills without dying. Doing it legit was a pain. Either you get x kills and forsake your team for the rest of the match and hide, or you get lucky enough to not die. Or you just boost them. Hopefully they are gone.

I liked Listen Mode...

For those that didn't use it, how did the part
with the generators coming on and the bloater thing occurring work?

Don't they just know where you a re? I remember trying to hide but they knew exactly where I was...not having listen mode would make times like that brutal IMO.

Iirc the that map was kind of like a circle and I just kept running around it while fighting the bloater.

Same. I can't even fathom not using listen mode, but I respect people who are patient and skilled enough to do so.

For me it was about knowing where the enemies are, and planning how to best approach the situation, almost like a puzzle or strategy game. But I imagine that not being able to see that clearly would make it a more desperate and frantic experience, which I suppose given the nature of the game and atmosphere is more appropriate.

I just don't think I would have been able to get through it.

I did a lot of planning with Listen mode off. I just played with headphones and had to physically listen to locate enemies. The sound design is incredible for pinpointing stuff like that.

It was easy to just grab the keycard first and run. There were really only a few spots that forced you to fight, and that wasn't one.

I don't want to add another 8 hours of stress to my first through this game, just be having listening mode off. Maybe for me, I'll only turn it on once I'm spending too long in sections

The only drawback I can think of is if you want the MP DLC that isn't included (cosmetic head pieces & the ability to use some weapons and skills in custom loadouts) you'll have to purchase it from the US Store.

If you've already bought that MP DLC for the PS3 version from a Euro store and decide to get the PS4 game from the US Store, you'll have to rebuy the DLC if you want it cause EU DLC isn't compatible with the US version of the game. The Euro PS3 DLC will be compatible with the Euro PS4 game though and the same goes for US PS3 DLC with the US PS4 game.
