The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky PC |OT|

Bugs aside, when I got to the title screen the music got to me right away.
Estelle and Joshua are among my favorite characters, really looking forward to going on this journey again.

I'm enjoying how, at least so far in Rolent, Estelle and Joshua actually have a little conversation to say to you whenever you talk to NPCs, instead of them just spouting their info and flavor text at you. It makes them feel like they have more life in them instead of just being walking billboards and newspapers. It also kind of reminds me of the Party Chat system in the DS Dragon Quest remakes. Big plus if this keeps up.

This is one of the reasons why I like to compare the game to GameArts games like Grandia, because they do the same thing.

Neither the game nor the config will recognize the trigger buttons (or the right stick) of the 360 controller. Does anyone else have the problem?

It definitely keeps up. It's perhaps my favorite aspect of Trails, that each NPC has unique conversations and often their own side story going on; as you say, it breathes life into the world and makes it feel like it doesn't just revolve around you as the hero. The dialogue for most NPCs changes after every main plot point too, so make sure to go around and recheck them often!

I've tried several resolutions from 1368x768 on down, and disabled hi res text still getting the doubled videos.
Attempting to launch any resolution in windowed mode crashes immediately on launch.

Checking drivers right now, looks like Intel HD.

It seems to be an issue with the fact that the 360 controller uses xinput and Trails in the Sky is a much older game that prefers DirectInput. You can get around this by using a program like JoytoKey or Xpadder for now in conjunction with the keyboard bindings in the game config... I don't know if they plan to fix it or not.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Oh man, Trails pulled ahead of The Witcher 3 in GOG's best seller list. It's currently sitting at #2. Watch out, Divinity.

Yeah, don't sleep on the NPC dialogue people. It changes after every main story event. It really makes the world feel alive. No doubt it is a major reason these games are such huge localization undertakings.

Just started the game. Got to when I had control of the characters and saved.

I didn't get the weird FMV errors like others did, despite having CCCP codeces installed on this computer (4chan seems to think something related to CCCP is what's causing the trouble... LAV?) Anyway, I did experience a crash during the "present" sequence in the very first scene (1920x1080 full-screen) but I disabled HD font and I got past it.

Not sure why but the controls don't seem to be mapped right (using DS3 w/ Mayflash adapter), i.e. Select and Start are apparently the camera controls and the Camp command (and Cancel, it seems) is mapped to Square. Gonna rebind those right now and hope they stick, strange since Xinput should've binded those right from the get go.

I'm going to have to make sure I rebind my keyboard+mouse controls, some of them are pretty awkward by default, especially if you use the mouse alongside the keyboard. At least my Logitech controller has both D and Xinput, so if I decide to just go that route it shouldn't be too tough to work with.

Got to the S-Craft tutorial.

Been playing this with the 360 controller, and I tried to use them like you do on the psp (Press the directional buttons to move the cursor to them); but it goes way too fast, and I can't select them.

I've only had the FMV oddity so far, but that's partially from using Tom's work-around.

This game really opens up with a great selection of tuuuuuuuuuuuuunes right off the bat.

It's wonderful isn't it? That's why I soothe those worries about the amount of dialogue in this one with reminders of how pertient, vital, and believably conversational it all is. These are things other developers the world over should learn if they ain't already.

Is this a PC-8801 developer thingy? Both Falcom and GameArts started there.
Possibly. Companies similar to Falcom like Micro Cabin ("soft house", get it?) and Right Stuff did wordy, scenario-intense games like Illusion City and Alshark for J-PCs. Likewise, they did rather spare action-based games like the Xak series and Fiend Hunter. Hard to know when so few of the renowned JRPGs from that era (Burai and Bible Master, for example) haven't been translated.

Yeah, I mentioned that bug on the last page... I hope they can fix it. Until then we'll need the mouse or 1-4 on the keyboard to trigger them outside of a character's turn.

I haven't tried it myself, but try using this to map arrow keys to your dpad:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=123196118&postcount=711

That might solve the problem.

It doesn't fix this particular issue, sadly. Even using the arrow keys on the keyboard to select results in the same behavior.

Meh, I configured the 360 controller as well as I could and am using the keyboard for S-crafts. Navigating menus with the analogue stick isn't as bad as I thought, I don't have the patience to do more today.
The talking treasure chests get me every time, hilarious.

Oh yeah, would be lovely to have Glodia games translated.
Heck, even TGL sRPGs would be nice to have - first 6 Farland Stories have fan translation, so potential Western release would be much easier.
Anything non-H from PC-88/PC-98, basically.

I can apparently play this without crashes at 2560x1600 but it refuses to load at 2560x1440.

I'm screwing around with resolutions because the FMV seems like the aspect ratio is screwed up when I play it at 2560x1600. I'm not sure where to leave the resolution, honestly.

I'd like for one of the PC releases of Emerald Dragon to be available for people who can't understand Japanese to check out. I'm glad the Super Famicom version got translated, but it's so different from the originals. The FM-TOWNS version would be the way to go there though.

Thought I'd say that our programmer is looking over this thread and the Steam forums as well, so all of this is getting to her directly.

Use left/right to select a button at any time in battle, then hit confirm on the one you selected.

EDIT: Actually this seems to be broken for me. If I use left/right, I can see it very very briefly select a sphere and then the cursor disappears. Is anybody else seeing this behavior?

My friend and I both were having this issue. I have just been using 1-4 on the keyboard for it. Slight annoyance, but not a big deal at all.

Does anyone have a completed Japanese PC save that I could drop in to access NG+ right off the bat? I'd really like to start on Hard.

If it's crashing immediately on launch, it's probably the movie playback that's doing it, since the Falcom and XSEED logos that display on startup are a movie file.

If you go into the game configuration, try checking the box to disable movie playback, and see if the game runs for you. If so, we'll know that that's the problem, and you'll at least be able to play and enjoy the game until the issue is fixed -- though whether or not this is the case, I'd still suggest emailing support@xseedgames.com with a brief description of the problem and a copy of the latest .mdmp file in your Steam game folder (assuming you're playing this on Steam and not GOG), as that will be a huge help in resolving the problem.

Thanks, and sorry for the trouble!

Cool, I'll be reporting any bug I find here then.

Anyway, if you alt+tab the game on the opening video and come back to it later, the audio works fine, but the video shutters for a while (Eventually it works properly, though)

I love that you guys went the extra mile with the Direct Input controller option, BTW. Lots of developers ignore that in favor of Xinput these days.

Did the first couple of story bits and got up to the prologue just now. I'm playing in 800x600 because the text was a little small at 1080, also the game crashed a couple of times but lowering the res seems to have done the trick. Digging the game a lot, a lot, love the music, nice and peppy.

It's great to see people having the patience despite all these bugs and helping XSEED fixing them. The world can be a great place sometimes.

Does this game support 16:10 resolutions or should we be using 16:9?

I mean, I know the game ALLOWS me to choose 16:10, I just want to make sure the screen isn't stretched.

Yeah, I'm kinda surprised, honestly. I dunno, maybe people just have more faith in XSEED to get it fixed. Or maybe people realize how lucky we are to have the game at all, and are willing to wait a couple days for some fixes.

Gonna be hard to top Divinity, which has been sitting comfortably above TW3 for several weeks now.

Wiz's CRW series of games really needs consideration, since people are gonna run out of Front Mission titles to translate. Kogado made tons of interesting CRPGs in their day (from Cosmic Solider to Power DoLLS 2 Advanced), and I'm going to keep hoping for some System Sacom games to get attention.

Hmm, FM Towns emulation's trickier than for the PC-98. That platform definitely had some of the best post-release ports, though.

Sara just posted on her twitter she's put the first post-release patch on Steam.

"I've just pushed our first post-release patch for Trails to Steam. No idea how much is fixed but I've made an effort to fix some things. GOG will get patches just a bit slower because I don't have an automated way of patching it at the moment."

So anyone having issues, see if that does anything.

For me, it's both reasons, but mostly the first one. They did a great job with the Ys games and I expect they'll sort this out the same way.

Ah, but that also means that the hype surrounding that game might be waning soon. Now is the time for TitS to cover the land!

Actually, whatevz. I love both the Divinity series and Falcom.

Unless there's some new surprises I think that was basically by default. The original game kind of predated Xinput and most Japanese gamers seem to love having their controllers even on PC (this does play reasonably well with just a mouse, but I recall a lack of gamepad support was an issue with Xanadu Next, which got it patched in response.)

The game was developed with Direct Input from the start. This was released in 2004.

UNZ worked well enough for me to play and complete the FM TOWNS versions Emerald Dragon, Xak 3, and others.

It's weird that the cancel/jump button also opens the menu. I wish there was a way to change this!
I'm trying to do my typical RPG button config, but I can't because of this.

Using the 360 pad ideally would look like this:
A: OK/Talk
B: Cancel/Jump (can you even jump in this game?)
X: Map or something else
Y: Menu

Sadly, it's not possible. :(
...or is it?

You can set it so an additional button opens the menu by using JoyToKey to bind a button to the ESC key, but that's about all you can do.

Just got an update on Steam. Dunno what it does though.

EDIT: "I've just pushed our first post-release patch for Trails to Steam. No idea how much is fixed but I've made an effort to fix some things." according to Sara. Vague!

Love you XSEED. Purchased and downloaded. I still got other games to finish but once those are done, TITS is all mine. I don't even know what I'm for other than JRPG greatness from what others are saying. Been a while since I've played one so really looking forward to it.

Out of curiosity I remember the blog saying eventually Falcom will send majority of PS3 Trails HD assets over to allow use in PC version. Is that including better quality character models as well?
