Catching up after barely getting any play time in the last few days, still in Chapter 8:
I went in the order of Bose -> Ruan -> Zeiss -> Grancel and I've just finally entered the Rolent area where I left off last night. As I completed quests, saved a school, restored the hot springs, killed Dimension Bugs and generally made my way through Liberl on foot (again) I picked up Gambler Jacks 12, 13 and 14 but no 11. I assume I'll find that in Rolent, and if so then it would appear I should have visited Rolent first. Hopefully that doesn't mean I missed out on some time-sensitive quest or story bit.

There was one during chapter 7, did you get that?

Yeah. They make it pretty obvious I should bring someone specific so I didn't miss it. Same with Tita's upgraded S-craft, the game goes to the trouble to let you know something is there for you but you have to bring the right person. I like that, wish it was present in FC.

Yes that one will be in Rolent. Nothing time sensitive that you could have missed but after you complete the quest at
Malga Mine, make sure you have a good look around the town. One of my favourite moments and I almost missed it.

I missed that part, but luckily I had a savefile just after I finished that particular sidequest.
The ending of that scene was awesome. The reactions of the girls were also way funny, especially Schera and Tita.

finished the game. about Kevin
what happens if he's in your active party at the end? He just disappears and reappears magically? New dialogue in his scene with Weissmann?
also I missed the unique dialogues of some specific characters during the numerous boss fights in the last dungeon, I wouldn't mind to read/see those somewhere without completing that dungeon 10 more times. sadly I picked a pretty boring party for the final part
*it's true that you can actually go back before each fight and change the party accordingly, haven't even thought about it. to be honest the final dungeon was a drag and I just wanted to rush through it.
edit,
Just Zane and Schera get significant changes for their bosses.
ok, seems like it's not just a few unique dialogues. what did I miss, then? :p
also curious about
Kevin&Loewe

Dat feeling when you kill 3 shining poms in a single battle and one slightly underleveled character gets almost 8000 exp and gets, like, 7 or 8 level ups.

homer_drool.png

And then kinda funny when this happens to another character at the same time who only got 1 level, despite getting a lot of exp too:

ZMA0OGR.png

Like, what are the chances that 1) I previously had & then got just so much exp (something like 1749 points for Agate), 2) confronted 3 shining poms in a single fight, 3) had my CP full for all characters, 4) just so happened to have three characters with mid-range AoE s-crafts that could reach all three shining poms & 5) after having managed to get a surprise attack on the enemies my first three turns were with those AoE characters and TWO of those got Crit attack turns and the third had that +10 attack turn, that I was THEN left 1 exp short of another level up. :p Once in a lifetime gaming experience there. ;D

Oh? I thought it was You Shiina

Nope, as far as I know.
It's possible Shiina's own style evolved during FC/SC's development period, though I have to imagine someone else some of the FC party members' status portraits because they're so glassy-eyed it hurts.

You know who should do more Falcom work? The unidentified person who did art for VM Japan and SC's Ruan casino trump. VM Japan has really balanced illustrations benefiting designs I already like, and the new interpretations of classic Gagharv/Iselhas characters via the Ruan cards is awesome.

Chapter 6 Spoilers

Man, I was spoiled by FC villains. I mean I assumed there would be more supervillain enemies this time around but like did they run out of grounded believable villainy or something? Even the mayor who burned down orphanages bothered to have a motive and personality beyond psychopathic. The enforcers alone are bad enough but typical of JRPG villains standards and I can forgive a little flamboyance. At the very least Loewe is still mysterious in a good way. Weissman I thought would actually be an interesting master-manipulator/chessmaster type villain. But holy shit the moment the organ music starts playing as Estelle enters Sanctuary I thought there was no way he would actually be playing an organ. But lo and behold, this guy bothered to install a giant organ in the middle of his spaceship that takes up at least 3 to 4 stories. He just sits there, waiting, playing the organ until someone walks into his room. As if the game had no other way of indicating his evilness to the audience. Everything about this guy and his organization gets sillier and sillier the more I see of it.

You'll probably be happier with chapter 7.
There's much more characterization/backstory of the Enforcers.

I always liked the Dinosaur Resurrection soundtrack cover the most.

Hard mode is, well, hard. I wouldn't recommend playing the game on Hard for a first playthrough: battles take just too long to complete, there is no fun in that.

Grinding is also required.

I played through SC on normal without needing to grind - thus, why it's 'normal'.

People coming from other Falcom games kind of get a rude surprise thinking Normal will be too easy - I know I pick Nightmare in every Ys title.

Actually, I have not had to grind so far besides gaining a level for that extra edge over the ridiculous final Prologue boss. Every other boss so far I've beaten with cleverness and a little luck. After that first hump I've been enjoying my playthrough on Hard so far. But escort fights like this can fuck off because they can easily one hit k.o. the NPC if they want, especially with all the extra turns.

If I were to rebalance the hardmode, I would probably lower the stats a tad but keep the high amount of speed for enemy turns. The key challenge that changes the flow of battle a ton from Normal is NOT the extra HP like people say, it's the extra turns. Every turn matters, and fights feel like a real struggle. It kinda reminds me of the game Gungnir on PSP if any of you have played that.

Is there any website where it can compare my PC specs to the game's?

Not sure if my graphics card is good enough and I really don't want to buy a new graphics card just for one game, or to buy a bigger-sized memory card for my PSP just for this game.

Trails SC came out in 2006, and even then is a sequel in the same engine with the same quality of assets for a game that came out in 2004. On top of that, even in 2004 this didn't really push PCs to the limit or anything.

I really don't think you'll have problems running it.

Is there no way to check? :/ I mean, I'm using a 2007 Dell laptop.

Minimum Requirements said:
OS: Windows XP
Processor: Pentium III 550 MHz
Memory: 512 MB RAM
Graphics: 32 MB VRAM, 3D accelerator compatible w/ DirectX 9.0c
DirectX: Version 9.0c
Storage: 4 GB available space
Sound Card: Compatible with DirectX 9.0c

I looked at dell laptops from 2007 and I really, really, super doubt that your laptop has specs that are below this.

Go look at your specs and compare them to this.

If you're that worried, I guess go download Ys Origin demo off Steam and see how that runs. Its not the same engine but the Ys games also are known for being toaster games IIRC.

Started this up yesterday after picking it up on the GOG sale. I've gotten to Ruan and so far it's been really pleasant. I didn't really care much for the boring love story in FC, but the prologue did a damn fantastic job of characterising how Estelle is dealing with it. It's also picking up speed on developing her from the brash archetype of the first game to a more rounded person and I enjoy that.

So far I'm all in on this quest.

PS! Love Estelle's new colour scheme.

Judging from the music I hear in that Evo trailer, they over-arranged it again, just like in FC, and I don't think I'll like it as much as the original SC soundtrack.

Yeah I get you originals are definitely better still I'm interested.

Both Ys: Origins and FC are $10 right?

It's back to $20 but sheeeeit man lookit all this fun.

Made more progress in Chapter 9. I'm having the same issues I had with Chapter 7 honestly. When the entire chapter is just dungeon crawling without the town/NPC/guild/sidestory stuff supporting it, I just don't feel it's as fun. I think it exposes a lot of the flaws of the game as well - the slower than ideal battle system, the repetitive enemy patterns, the slow animations for lifts/teleporters/etc.

Should still be able the clear the game within the next couple of days I think. But I'm going to have to re-evaluate how excited I am for 3rd after this, since I hear it's one huge dungeon crawl. :/

To be fair I do hear that the game does have quite a lot of story stuff to handle at the same time, so there is that. Still a buncha text. Honestly, one of hte things I'm looking forward to with 3rd if we ever get it is new areas. I figured we'd have maybe 1/2 the game in Liberl, with new towns and such to explore as well. There were some new dungeons, but I was disappointed in so many reused areas.

Well, the Japanese rate 3rd pretty low on the popularity chart I saw. I won't link because spoilers and also scans, but in the last Japanese poll I saw it went:

1. SC
2. Azure
3. FC
4. Zero
5. Cold Steel
6. 3rd
7. Nayuta

Sen II hadn't come out yet when this poll happened.

Favorite male character, obviously taken by Olivier followed by Loewe and Joshua.

Favorite females, Estelle followed by Renne followed by Tio from Zero/Azure.

I believe Aeana's favorite Kiseki game is 3rd, so you should talk to her about it.

Eh I'm really digging chapter 9 so far.
Having different visuals and music really helps keep the exploring fresh and after how little combat and significant moments there was in chapter 8, I'm really down for a long, high stakes dungeon. But to be fair, I really enjoy the combat more than most.

One of the improvements I'm looking forward to in CS is being able to hit enemies on the field before fighting them - FC/SC Evolution allow you to attack the enemies on-field before actually fighting them in battle, like in later entries.

Yeah, I saw that this practice started with Zero. I'm curious: what are the advantages given for striking the enemy first? I'm assuming it replaces ramming full force into their backs on the field to gain the initiative (my favorite tactic), does it also deplete enemy HP/stun or some other status affect? I suppose you could also use it to keep enemies from chasing you if you're trying to avoid them.

Yes, I can see how that could be useful. R.I.P. Haze quartz, tho.

You get an attack bonus, which can be either attacking first with additional chances on criticals in those turns, and 1.5-2x the amount of experience points depending on how you strike the enemy/engage the battle. You can indeed use it to stop them from chasing you, or manipulate multiple enemies into attacking you simultaneously (for chained battle bonuses).

I was randomly going through the monster book in Chapter 8 and had a lot of ????? but I dunno who or what I missed, unless these are enemies that I haven't yet been able to encounter.

Anyway, finished the Rolent area of chapter 8. Ruan up next. Hope I can finish chapter 8 this weekend.

Also watching videos of Zero/Azure on youtube was a huge mistake, now I want those games so badly. Love the looks of the characters I've seen.

LOL I am not surprised.

On the other hand, I know the Tio from the poll is from Zero/Ao, but my mind always thinks about Tio from the Perzel farm in FC/SC first.

I haven't gotten too far in Nayuta yet but what's it doing on the bottom? Were they just rating the stories or something? Because it's really fun.

Is Nayuta even a "real" Kiseki game? Always looked like they wanted to make a Zwei 3 reboot or something and used the Kiseki name brand to sell it instead.

For some reason, I thought you had already finished the whole series.

I just started 3rd and finished the prologue. Lots of cutscenes, two boss fights and one very small dungeon.

For people curious about the 3rd, it's a game more about Kevin and it happens 6 months after SC. So far it seems more like a unique story with some ties to what has happened in SC, instead of a direct follow up.

Bladenic

Member
Isn't the 3rd more of a dungeon crawl with cutscenes in between?

Also I read that there are
16!!!! characters holy shit.

Anyway, still going through chapter 8. People who use Agate and Zane probably gonna laugh at me but I've just in this chapter used them to their full potential. That being Zane as a tank with Taunt and Agate as a Final Break machine with Wild Rage.

ALSO about chapter 8, poor Tita. She becomes effectively USELESS.
