The trailer, the concept, whatever.
I'm not a big comic reader, my only exposure to DC is through the DCAU and the animated films that have come from that. And the live action films of course.
Edit: feenix and jaded keep going please dont let us stop you
Alrught, I'm fairly drunk while writing this. If I make any erros, I'll correct them tomorrow
okay
so the problem with DC is that they don't really know the deeper meaning of their heroes. THis is aproblem I have with both marvel and DC, but Marvel has a vague idea of it. Winter Soldier is an excellent example because, while a fun movie, it also knows Captain America represents American ideals, and they place that in the context of how the modern world monitors people and how that violates rights.
To me, things like that, the deeper meanings behind superheroes are what make superheroes themselves worth while. Without that, you just have costumed assholes punching people.
Whereas Marvel tends toward levity in their movies, DC tries to make everything as serious as possible, which to them means dark and unhappy and angry. Man of Steel is an example of this, for various reasons I'll get into when I sober up and rewatch it sometime.
But to put it succinctly, the movie that they are making with Batman v Superman is that they want to see 2 well known icons fight. But that's not what makes their fight meaningful. Whats meaningful is that they stand for opposing viewpoints and that they're actually friends who just feel forced to fight each other. By making Batman and Superman just...antagonisticca towards eeach other, it's just about to huge muscled dudes hitting each other because 'badassery'.
That two heroes feel they are forced to fight each other, to brutalize each other the way they do criminals, is supposed to be a tragedy, something like a train crash, fascinating to watch, yes, but at the end of the day, a tragedy that would have been better if it hadn't happened.
I don't llike frank miller and I think The Dark Knight Retturns, is really overrarated. Batman is a fucking asshole in it, and Superman is depicted as someone whose two naive to see the 'big picture'. However, frank miller used to be a better writer than he is noow, so he atleast portrayed it as superman being goodhearted, whereas he now just portrays him as a moron, and batman as someone who takes pleasure in hurting those he deems 'wrong'. In my opinion, this is just not hte source you want to be drawing from. "Tell me, do you bleed? You will" is not a line that Batman should be saying, like he's excited to hurt superman. I get that they might not be friends yet, but it paints batman as a sadist. This has been happening in the DC animated movies too. Batman and robin had Bruce say the words "This is going to hurt, and I am going to enjoy it." That is supposed to be a fear tactic at best, to make enemies scared of him. It shouldn't be true, or atleast shouldn't be celebrated, because it simplifes the things superheroes do to a simple revenge fantasy, and they can be so much more than that.
Now, as a disclaimer, I obviously haven't seen BvS. They may deal with the conflict in a way that's not as bad as that, but considering the source material, considering the director and what he's known for, I think atleast the concern is warranted. Because Marvel is lighthearted, DC feels they HAVE to be heavy and dark, and while I do want more serious superhero stories, they are trying to appeal to people for shallow reasons, when they should be digging deeperr and letting the meaning of what Batman and Superman's crusades are dirive them instead.
I';l be more coherent when I'm sober, I promise
