Okay, 5th dungeon question

Another freaking rotation lock...what's the combo to unlocking it? I found the the combination on the floor but apparantly I'm not seeing it. I've tried right, left, right, up and up, down, up, left but I got zilch.

wheels ontoe floor have a number of red prongs indicating the order. The orientation of the prongs is up, as indicated by the wheels next to the door
I don't think so.
It seems like a weird attempt to rewrite the origin story of these characters, arbitrarily adding a new, stupidly predicable component that's had no place in the series so far.
I mean, it's okay, but inessential. Nothing revelatory.

Sincewhen has any part of Zelda story been anything BUT inessential?

Hylia needs a mortal hero to wield the Master Sword in defense of the Triforce. Which she sets up in that cut scene.

And which is not the interesting because
(1) we didn't actually need an origin story for Link/Zelda/etc (as I said, OoT had us covered pretty well--call this the Star Wars prequel problem), and (2) the game itself does little with the consequences of that plan for our two main characters (as I argued in my previous post). We're left with a revelation that is not particularly dramatic within the game or for the series as a whole.

You could argue that we needed an origin story for the master sword, but despite Fi's presence we really got very little information about Fi or the sword itself. You may also think that Zelda locking herself away and sending Link as her chosen agent to obtain the triforce and conquer evil is plenty interesting. It's certainly very similar to what we've seen in previous Zelda games. For that reason, I'm not going to say SS had a bad story--just a dull one. It peaked during the more mysterious first third of the game (climaxing at the original time gate), and then it got really fucking stupid in the last third. No one thinks to close the time gate behind Link when there is (a) no reason to think Link would ever have to go back through it, and (b) the villain admits he is looking for it? Impa blew up one time gate to keep Ghirahim from going through--it doesn't occur to her to be careful with this one?

Has anyone found any ways to break out of the boundaries yet? I want to explore, dang it.

I know this particular device is not unique to SS, but I have a hard time understanding why (3rd dungeon spoiler, I guess)
you don't gain access to the three regions simultaneously. Not that there's a whole lot of exploration to be done in any particular area of SS, but it would have been nice to have the option of flying to Lanayru, for instance, and then turning around once I couldn't advance any farther. Note that this would actually be good for beginners too since they would be able to gather more heart pieces or upgrades before returning to the main quest. These arbitrary boundaries are one of the worst trends in modern Zelda.

Oh, different kind of boundaries.

Just passed my 2nd trial (and then spent a lot of time in skyloft). I'm loving this game. Unlocked (minigame spoilers)
Fun Fun Island, and I LOVE it. Skydiving was one of my favorites in WSR, and this minigame is just as fun. I fear that is has broken the rupee system for me. I just spent 1200 out of my 1900 max because i knew I could get it back so quickly. And sure enough, 10-15 minutes later, I did! Oh well...Now everytime I upgrade my wallet I'll just head back to Fun Fun!

I'm kind of bummed that it seems like I have everything upgraded already. I hope the game surprises me somehow in this regard.

Also, any harp tips? I'm having trouble with
the performance with Kina at the lumpy pumpkin.

Just beat the game!

I think it's my favorite Zelda. Sure there are some annoying parts, but I found it such a joy to play the game. The ending was nice and overall just a really amazing game. The music, graphics, gameplay everything... sooo gooood.

Also weapon spoiler kinda

The Goddess Longsword is such a beautiful weapon... I like it more than the Master Sword. I'm pretty sure if I ever see someone selling a Goddess Longsword I'm going to buy it

dedicate like 10-15 minutes to learning the controls at the sword academy place in skyloft. seriously.

also, all your strikes are usually based on the wiimote being flat. so for example, if you want to execute horizontal strikes, make sure your wiimote is held flat, then swing. i mentioned this a few days ago but i tend to hold the wii mote sideways by habit so my strikes werent going the way i wanted them. since ive been conscious about it, ive hit just about everything i wanted to hit.

same with vertical strikes.

for tightropes, i dash while quickly shaking the wiimote left and right while the wiimote is completely upright.

i think if a lot of people spent some time dedicating to the controls at first instead of rushing out and learning on the go, they would have a better time with this game. the controls have been flawless for me for the most part

The early goblins adjust their blocking angle based on how you're holding your sword. So if you're holding it out to the side and they have their guard up for a horizontal attack, do a vertical attack motion quickly. You jostle the tight rope by flicking your wrist down. The tight ropes can be really annoying and it took me awhile to figure out that I wasn't doing the correct motion to balance right.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't know you were supposed to hold it vertically on the tightropes, guess that explains why I was flailing my arm around like an idiot with no success.

I've listened to Fi's theme , romance theme and the main menu theme. They are all amazing and relaxing. Do you guys have other tracks you could recommend that are mellow and relaxing like those?

Really? I tilted my wiimote all the time and I still got the strikes I wanted. I tested for like 5 minutes once I got into the first dungeon just to see what I could do.

If the Goddess Longsword is the one after you get Nayru's flame then I agree, it looks absolutely beautiful

It's the first upgraded Goddess sword, the second is the Goddess Whitesword which is just as beautiful, but I didn't like the whiteness of it at first... still they look amazing.

Jeez, just decided to google it cause I wanted to upgrade my Sacred Shield ... there are only two known places right now to get bird feathers? Sheesh.

You get feathers from any birds anywhere. Just use the bug net on them. Blue birds give the rare feather.

I'm guessing Faron Woods is the only place though right?

Kinda weird cause I can find blue feathers or goddess plumes everywhere but regular bird feathers can't be found in chests or anything.

So I think I just hit the part where you can experience a game breaking bug, but search is down so I wanted to make sure that I don't get it,
are you supposed to visit Lanayru last in order to not get it
?

Faron Woods easily has the most birds, yeah. But they're throughout the whole game really.

Ah, honestly they are both amazing, but I like this one the most. Something about the witness just appeals to me, maybe it's because this is the first time in 3D Zelda history that link is using a white sword? I don't know. But the design is genius, I very much prefer those over the master sword

I'm surprised Nintendo haven't commented on it if it's a game breaking bug.

Unless it's only happening to some people?

Well, got the last Heart Piece and now I'm moving on to Hero mode.

Really making an effort to appreciate the music this time around. It is AMAZING in the first hours of the game.

LoZ had a white sword

Did anyone else notice that... eh it's not some terrible spoiler but what the hell:
the exterior of the second dungeon looks identical to the dungeon at the highest mountain peak in ALTTP? And they're both on what is pretty much going to be Death Mountain
?

Are you talking about Ganon's tower?

They aren't really the same.

Here is the place from Skyward Sword. Here is the one from aLttP.

The exterior and interior of the SS area is Bali-inspired (and happens to be the most visually stunning dungeon in the series).

It's apparently done by a very specific sequence of events that is hard to replicate, so it's not effecting that many people. Still no reason for them to not atleast address the existence.

uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck

Yup, I generally hate escort missions, and this was no different. This was the "low" point of the game for me.
Come on, they can't be serious with this water dragon harp note fetch quest. Are the other two this awful?

They are worse, but that's because I thought the water dragon quest was one of the game's highlights :p

They are completely different. Anyway, I actually enjoyed that collection, which surprised me since the first thought I had was oh my god another collectathon.

They aren't really the same.

If it's not the same it's clearly inspired by it enough to maybe be there for the fans, I mean they're both essentially atop Death Mountain and they're both tall, layered structures.

I mean this is straight from ALTTP

And to me looks very close to the one in SS. Again they may not be the same building, but they're situated in a very similar geography, both in the same mountain region. Also, different time periods and stuff... we've seen the same places across various games taking different looks.

Easily the worst part of the game so far. Especially without arrows readily available.

I actually
ended up staying in one spot for a bit to dodge a Moblin archer and steal the arrows that missed me and stuck in the ground. Was a pretty cool moment. Felt like Legalos or some shit.

The other two are great. After the part you're doing till the credits roll the entire game was pure excellence for me.

Yeah man, I had a harder time getting ornamental skulls than golden skulls, which are supposed to be rarer.

I must be weird since I didn't mind the escort mission at all. Maybe it was because I upgraded the quiver to the large one and had a bunch of arrows available. It was fun sniping everything including the Moblins. Only part I failed was when those stupid lava slug things I didn't notice killed Scrapper

It was more of a terrible setup than anything else. The actual was sniping, I agree
