this thread is fucking disheartening

Just keep your expectations in check. There is a good game in here but unfortunately it's constant need to make sure everyone can play with little difficulty brings it down considerably. I reached the fifth dungeon before I couldn't take it anymore. All the worst elements of this generation are in full force in this game.

I do envy those that don't mind because it fucken sucks not enjoying a Zelda game.

I've gave up on the game. I finished dungeon 6 and, knowing some of the forthcoming tasks, I just have no interest in carrying on. The dungeons in the game are great, maybe slightly linear but well designed and fun. But nearly everything else about the game frustrates or disappoints me. Words can not express my disappointment in the lack of a real overworld. The three environments in the game feel lifeless and boring. The structure of the game just dooms it for me.

Please, for the next game, have a real overworld filled with things to do. Have more than one town. The world should be Zelda's filler. Not bullshit like the Spirit Realm, stupid fetch quests and fighting the same bosses numerous times.

On the boss of 6th dungeon, stuck and about to give up on the game and youtube the rest.

I can't beat Ghiram's first phase. I HATE the motion controls in this game. I cannot get a goddamn hit on him. I try moving my sword around quickly and swinging from the opposite direction but it never fucking works. If I move too quickly it slices and he catches it. If I move too slowly his hand follows it. The first time I fought him in dungeon 1 it took me FOREVER and now it's even tougher and I just can't land a freaking hit. It's also tiring the fuck out of me swinging around nonstop while not getting hits and having to waggle my way free all the time.

Hate the bosses in the game.

If you let him follow your sword around, after a few seconds his hand will "lock" in place and you can attack him from a different angle. Also if you raise your shield he can't follow your movements.

im sorry but the dungeon style inbetween dungeon overworld is 100x better than TP's barren wastelands, and the flying part could have been better and bigger but it still did a job of actually making it feel larger than it is.
OoT/TPs entire world could be traversed by foot... thats more lifeless than anything

There's times when the predungeon stuff is great. 5's was great. 3's was pretty great. There's also times when it certainly wasn't. 1, 2 and 4 especially. Those sections dragged the game down to misery.

The point I'm trying to make is that in SS, it never felt like I was in a world. I felt like I had three very distinct, lifeless areas, a shitty worthless sky section where I could collect the contents of chests I've already found, and Skyloft, which I will never go to except to explicitly do random NPC stuff. And even that area is crippled by the weird day/night cycle where you again have to go out of your way to potentially find content.

So let's say I finished a dungeon. Fi will inevitably tell me where to go. I'll have to go to the sky. So outside the temple I go to a bird statue and fly to the sky. Then I make a 10-30 second boring journey that requires no attention to the next area. Then, in this new area, I'll follow a path to where I have to go. Nothing about this is exciting and there is no opportunity for me to explore and find things. In Ocarina or Twilight Princess, I'd usually travel by foot or horse to the location I had to go, and there was always a chance I'd find or see something new that will distract me from the next goal. Your playtime goes up from doing these kinds of things. In SS, there's really not a whole lot of anything to do. You can see everything there is to see in the sky in 2 minutes. The three ground areas don't have towns or NPCs to interact with (at least none of note), and are primarily designed as large areas for you to travel through with some minor puzzles and combat. That's fine, but there's just nothing exciting about them. When you're returning again and again, there's no new NPCs, there's no new mini games to play. Its all just "dowse to find the direction you have to go, and go".

I think for me, the game was trying to pad the game time out with content, but it's at the expense of the kind of content that has always been the great time sink of Zelda. I played Ocarina on 3DS this year and I think my final game time was 40 hours or something crazy. Not because the game gives me a list of chores between dungeons, but because it encourages you to go around, talk to people and spend hours in its world. In Wind Waker, as much as I certainly didn't love it's overworld, it's literally designed for you to explore and get lost in. Skyward Sword just never made me feel like I wanted to spend time in its world.

I absolutely agree. The 3 areas were all watered down dungeons, and there was no actual overworld. The sky tried to fill that role, but there was nothing really there.

OoT/TPs entire world could be traversed by foot... thats more lifeless than anything

I don't see this at all. Being able to walk around the world doesn't make it lifeless. That has nothing to do with how lively an area feels.

I had to buy a new fucking Wii because my old one wouldn't read any games, so I couldn't play for like, a week. Anyway, I fucking hate the bird controls, that's probably my biggest complaint about the game. Post 6th Dungeon Spoilers:
Trying to fight Levias with the bird was all kinds of annoying. I didn't expect to fight Girahim, Levias w/parasite and The Imprisioned one after the other either, it definitely changed the pace of the game.

I thought the
escort mission in Eldin Volcano
was going to be hell but I didn't find it too bad, same with the
Tadnotes quest
, it didn't take me a lot of time to get them all. Right now I just helped the
Thunder Dragon
and I'm headed to
Eldin Volcano again to find the last dragon
. I might stop and do some side quests though.

Do as Zekes says. Move your sword around a little, wait until his arm stops moving or it's in a fixed position, then strike. You can also attack/strike between his crystals. Also, don't waggle and swing the Wiimote like crazy, do it in a semi-slow, controlled and precise way and try to use only horizontal, vertical and diagonal strikes.

It's like everything is constantly working against me in this game. You want to use that bomb? Too bad the camera isn't lining up right and the motion controls aren't doing what you'd expect.
... and the camera all conspire against it.

I don't recall troubles with the camera. What place/situations exactly are giving you trouble? The trajectory vectors for the bombs work great, IMO. And there is no crazy motion involved: 1) Wiimote up -> throw. 2) Wiimote down -> roll. 3) No motion, press A -> place bomb.

I was surprised that
the Eldin Volcano stealth section was actually kind of good. I really liked its execution. Plus the little atmosphere bits like the heart lub-dubs as you approach enemies, the lack of adequate hearts throughout the section, the volcano going to hell and the lack of weapons went a long way in making the section very enjoyable to me.

I figure those are Ocarina codes? I forgot how to use Ocarina (iirc only used it once for DKCR with Classic Controller), do I just make a notepad file and put it in an Ocarina folder of CFG Loader naming it the same as my Zelda version wbfs?

Also I don't get what I should put to have a 20x modifier while pushing A?
Are there other noteworthy codes to "improve" the game that you know of?

Quoting myself so you can implement those godsends:

There's several ways but the one which I find to be the most practical (you save the trouble of inputting all the numbers and letters) goes as follows:

You must have Accio Hacks (http://www.wiibrew.org/wiki/Accio_Hacks) ( download link: http://geckocodes.org/AH.php?dl ) installed in your Homebrew Channel. When you enter Accio Hacks you will be prompted to connect to the database where they have all the cheat code lists stored; then you just have to choose a system and subcategory. For Skyward Sword You should go to Wii --> Wii Ntsc (U) --> T --> AccioHacks --> The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

When you select the game by pressing A the whole Cheatcode list gets transfered to your SD.

After that you just have to go back to the main menu, select AccioHacks Again, do the same steps (Wii --> Wii Ntsc (U) --> T ) and instead of selecting the AccioHacks option you will see Skyward Sword showing up right below it.

Select Skyward Sword and you will be taken to the entire set of cheats.

Look for the cheats you would like to activate, and press right on the D-pad. You'll see the selected cheat move one space to the right.

After you make your choices you just press B, then you'll get asked if you'd like to create a .GCN file for that game. Say yes and voila, your GCN file is all set.

To run the cheats you should use a USB/ISO Loader (I think all of them support Ocarina cheats by now). I use NeoGamma for running ISOs, but you could use any other app you want. You should turn Ocarina mode ON and that's it, that's all you have to do. Ocarina prompts the loader to look for the game's corresponding cheatcode list (.GCN), and if it finds one then all the cheats get activated).

Hope this helps!

Enjoy!!

Just beat the game. I would give it a solid A-

Disclaimer: I played the whole thing on Dolphin on a decent PC at 3x resolution, solid 30fps the whole way through except for a couple minor parts. I haven't touched the game on Wii, so any comments I have about controls might be Dolphin related, though everything seemed to work fine - fine enough to beat the game anyway.

Pros:
- The art direction and music were both magnificent. The orchestral soundtrack is the best execution of music I've ever heard in a Zelda game, by far, and the colors / character design / world design is really exceptional. This game was meant to be seen in HD, and I do feel for those stuck playing it in standard definition.
- Groose, character of the year.
- Dungeons that really required thought and use of your entire arsenal. Some of my favorite dungeon designs of all time, I think - they hit just the right key in terms of balancing challenge and longevity. None of the dungeons overstay their welcome.
- The story beats really kept me going. Outside of some fetching, the game was paced incredibly well.
- Secrets, secrets everywhere. Even if the sky doesn't have much to brag about, there's lot of places to go on the three main lands that suggest many visits from the player.
- Extremely fun fighting (when the controller does what you want it to do)

Cons:
- The harp is just dumb - I know it's tradition for Zelda games to have instruments, but anything would've been better here - how about a violin or any stringed instrument? The Wii Motion Plus could've handled anything like that in a tremendously interesting way.
- Filler fetch quests. The game uses dowsing about twice as much as I wish it had. I guess the game wanted to balance out puzzles, action, and fetching pretty evenly, but who wants as much fetching as puzzles and action?
- The stabbing forward motion only ever working properly when I'm outside of a fight - no, jabbing my wiimote forward does not mean I want to shield block again, or do a vertical spin. I'll admit this is probably my mishandling of the nunchuck at certain intervals, but I swear I could never improve this behavior even as I tried to still my nunchuck hand as much as possible in fights.
- Flying / Swimming controls. Yes, it worked, but it didn't work well. Just because a player is using the Wii Motion Plus doesn't mean it should be used for everything.
- Hero Mode isn't Play As Groose Mode.

Yes there are! The list keeps growing and the codes just get better and better. You can find it right here: http://geckocodes.org/?c=SOUE01

Brawl, DKCR, and now Skyward Sword?
Hey Nintendo, stop making design decisions that resort to your fans making custom codesets.

brawl+ is amazing and got like 200+ hours at the house i was at
they claim that they take notes of peoples complaints but really it sounds like a half-truth

Guys, I just couldn't wait so I gave the Instant Text code a try and guess what?

This game is now FUCKING AWESOME. Yes, bolded and caps'd, it absolutely deserves it. To every Hombrew user out there: Try these 2 codes together ASAP, specially if you're on your first run:

Instant Text (160x Normal Text Speed)

No Notification The First Time You Collect A Bug Or Treasure

You won't believe the massive improvement both of them can bring to the gameplay, it's just ridiculous. As udivision already said, you can just wonder what the hell were the developers thinking when they took such poor design choices. Thank you coders, you have taken this game closer to what it should be from day 1.

Guess how long it took to do both upgrades of the
Bow
post-cheat codes: 20 seconds.

Yes, it's that good. Everything is now instantaneous. Go and try it our please, you won't regret it.

Just used this code earlier today, and it's hilarious. Super clawshot is too.

Goes to show if Nintendo had just based a bit of game/level design around this stuff and thrown in a bit of non-linearity...SS would have been my GOTY!

Haven't really gotten a chance to read this thread, but why is it that this game seems so divisive? The media, as a whole, really seems to love it. I've only put 4 hrs in but it seems pretty awesome so far (minus the stopping and explaining stuff -_-)

To beat Girahim, you need to hold you sword very deliberately up to the left or the right, then he will move until he is standing right by you, with his hand up in the direction your sword is to block it, and after a few seconds his stance will change slightly to show that his hand is now locked in that position. Then slowly and carefully - NOT IN A RUSH - move your sword to the other side of him. You'll see that since his pose is locked in, he won't follow. Then cleanly sweep from that other side.

Also, the pre Dungeon 6 bit people are complaining about can be easily done without any damage at all if you upgrade the bow!

It's a combination of things. It definitely feels like some people went in wanting to hate it, and thus they fulfilled their own prophecy. Others went in convinced they'll love it, so hey, they love it.

For many though it seems to come down to whether or not you consider a few game design choices to be gamebreaking. Some people can't get past certain questionable design choices while others find them negligible or even enjoyable. I think SS is a game where bias one way or another has played a big part in its reception.

It does seem though that most of the people that went on a complete media blackout ended up really enjoying it.

There's a lot of downright dumb stuff in this game. It just depends how each person handles these elements.

These things are probably broadly true.

I don't know where I fit though. I went on a media blackout, and this was the first game I purchased at MSRP in years. I just found it extremely bland. I enjoyed some of my time with it, but it just didn't strike me as very special. In terms of gameplay and puzzles, it felt more like playing a THQ Zelda-like or something. Almost everything was linear and existed on a single plane, so that even if you came across a clever puzzle every once in a while, the game doesn't even encourage you to think about it. You just keep going along the same path and interact with the next obviously interact-able object and then you're at the boss.

SS music haters are nuts

The music is my least liked aspect of the game (apart from Fi). In fact, this is the third straight Zelda game in which I have been less than impressed with the music. Most of the background stuff in SS is extremely forgettable. Nothing compares to the serenity and mystique of Lake Hylia from TP. Then again, my views of Zelda music are probably heterodox.

What baffles me the most is that, not only are they poor choices from a game designing perspective, but in both instance it's something that was way better in previous installments. As Jarosh has pointed out the text speed in Twilight Princess is much much faster. And the annoying notifications for items during every playthrough was poorly implemented in Twilight Princess.

The only way I can get any reason out of those choices is when I accept that Nintendo did not make this game for the hardcore zelda fans first and foremost, but just as much if not more for newcomers of the series.

Options would have been the best solution though.

SS music haters are nuts

Don't get me wrong, there are some EXCELLENT songs in the game. However, there are too many areas filled with dull, incidental background music that detracts from the experience. The entire volcano area, for instance, is one of the worst sections for this thus far. An awful tune that repeats for the entire 30-60 minutes you spend in that area.

Having recently replayed A Link to the Past, it stings even more as that soundtrack (though repetitive) was absolutely golden 100% of the time. I didn't mind tracks repeating as they were always fantastic and, honestly, you never spent as much time in one area with the same song as you do in Skyward Sword.

I love the orchestral stuff (not just because it's orchestral but because the tunes are well composed), but I hate most of the synth work simply because the songs themselves are very dull. Very disappointing.

Around the volcano you often have to toss bombs into specific areas. The timing window for bombs isn't all that lengthy so you need to be quick. You first have to aim the camera in the right direction by tapping Z, but that only works if you keep adjusting Link's facing. Once you get that right you have to use the motion controls to toss or bowl the bomb. With the way I'm sitting in my chair, the most natural positions for holding the Wii-mote up or down do not trigger the actual action. It's not difficult, of course, but it keeps cropping up. It's not a natural series of actions.

Not an issue if I'm standing or stiffly sitting on a chair, but I'd rather not be forced into those positions for a few actions now and then.

I felt like the music volume was kinda low in SS. I didn't really notice it much one way or the other. It's certainly no Wind Waker, which has my favourite soundtrack.

Just got it last week.

I'm in
the lake
just after Dungeon 3 and I have a question.

Am I the only one who found the 3rd Boss A LOT more easy than the first two bosses ? I mean it was ridiculously easy, it took me two minutes. I'm not saying the other two are difficult either but after the 3rd one I was like "Already Over ?"

The third boss is basically a miniboss with more health. It's sad, especially after Girahim and that cool lava spider thing which actually made you think a bit.

Haha I hated that lava spider thing. I was expecting a giant fire snake. There were snakes on the wall, snakes on the ground, snakes whistling in the bgm, it was a snake-themed dungeon !!

Finally got to spend some more time with this over the weekend, just finished up the 5th dungeon. I think the game has been quality throughout and I haven't had any issues with the backtracking I've had to do so far (
except for re-visiting the first dungeon, but that didn't last long
). So for I would say the third dungeon and the pre-dungeon stuff before the 5th dungeon are my favorite parts of the game.

Do I still have some major backtracking to dread?
