The Medium's dual reality concept, in which you are on the move in two parallel worlds at the same time, is something special: It is impressive and refreshingly different, especially since there are also a few clever links between the two realities. But as is so often the case with the Bloober Team, despite positive approaches, there is a lack of a thrilling plot and a captivating game design: The puzzles are child's play, the fights are boring and the few encounters with the monster are either dull or frustrating. Aside from the well-staged cutscenes, one learns more about the confusing story primarily through an exaggerated number of documents, the redundant search for echoes or the stylistically terrible reconstruction of memories in the style of Everybody's Gone to the Rapture. For me, this gruesome type of narrative is the only real horror that The Medium exudes. Because otherwise the trip is surprisingly tame, keeps playing the same and sometimes dull game elements ("cut skin") and becomes frighteningly tough over long stretches towards the finale. However, I don't want to deny that the game and the chic art design have a certain atmosphere, which is mainly created by the support of the successful soundscape. But anyone who hopes for disturbing and exciting psychological horror in the style of classics such as Silent Hill, Project Zero or Amnesia will be disappointed. The Medium owes its performance in the satisfactory range primarily to its fresh and well-implemented idea of the dual reality concept and the rare moments when good design ideas flash. - 65% Rating
