The Mega-Cave Shooter Post, because they're totally awesome and sweet

I much prefer pixel art over the "HD" stuff, as long as it's not blurred with filters.

Sounds like a good purchase, then. Just waiting for it to arrive.

I wish I could find EOJ's complete list of port differences. :/

As a warning, the game's original resolution is actually 224x448, so it's impossible to get totally uniform square pixel scaling out of it. Doesn't bother me much, but I remember being a little perplexed at why I couldn't get the scaling options to look just right.

Indeed, the best you can do is set the size to 93 or 94% (both are near the correct ratio to get 2x 224 at 480x640) to minimize the scaling effects. It looks fantastic when you do 93% nearest neighbor and run it through a scanline generator.

I ordered Deathsmiles and Akai Katana to start off my Cave collection....mostly because they were the cheapest.

Now all I need is an xbox.

Edit: I broke down and got Espgaluda II as well. I've been watching a really good youtube podcast/video of Akai Katana, and I think I'm really going to enjoy that one. It looks crazy.

IIRC, they don't. Which is a shame, since the sprite corruption is among the most fun parts of Ketsui and Espgaluda.
Thought so. I remember someone at a shmupmeet getting surprised by it, guess that was the first time he played the PCB.
Interesting note about Ketsui seeming smoother, I always thought the PCB felt kinda choppy in parts, in particular the stage 3 boss' last pattern. I have no clue if that's just cause an illusion from the graphics or movement or if it's actually dropping frames or something.

Note that the last one they have now (360E?) is HDMI only, maybe composite. Not a huge deal if you'll always play on a TV, but if you ever get a CRT cab it'll be a lot easier to set it up with the previous version w/the old multi out...at least until some HDMI-JAMMA kits come out. I know one that's been in the works but don't know if it's close to fruition yet.

^Yeah, it's a shame about the 360E axing VGA, I used an old CRT computer monitor to play Mushi Futari and RFA back in the day. With the display options all squared away it looked great.

Great job on ALL of those purchases. Akai Katana took up a good portion of my year trying to chase a contest thats goin on here (one that I dont think anyone has one yet). Basically score big enough in Origin mode and get an artbook for it was the situation. Trying to get there was more fun than anything for me. I never made it but still the game is a joy and slash and Origin modes are so different in scoring that you essentially got TWO games in one there. LOVE that game with its rhythm. Start out, build meter for other form, slip into other form, build metal, go back use metal for katanas to clear screen...fly inside katana path and grind things safely for meter. Rinse/repeat PROFIT. Origin mode is trickier but sooooooooo good with its Gold hoarding.

Currently my Cave addiction is Deathsmiles 2x. Do one shot, get rings for multiplier, get that to 1000, switch to other shot get bigger rings for score and generate tons of suicide bullets from enemies. Use a combination of both to cancel those bullets for massive score. Time it right to be in a scenario to instantly refill meter to go back in.

Amazing pair of games, the Deathsmiles series. Both are easy to score in and a great intro to the genre.

Also I envy your Espgaluda 2...I bought one that was faulty and had to return it. Never replaced it and I hope to someday. I still haven't played it as I opted for Muchi Pork/Pink Sweets to get more titles in one purchase. Can't say I lost out, but I do still want it.

Hey guys, am currently very excited for Ikaruga, which will be launching tomorrow on Steam.

But my true shmup love will always be reserved for Cave bullet hells and I know I'm not the only who wishes Cave would bring their games to Steam, as a cursory glance in the Ikaruga OT as well as the discussion hub on Steam will attest.

Treasure seems to be quite happy with the feedback they've received via their Greenlight page for Ikaruga, even going so far as hinting of bringing Radiant Silvergun as well as announcing a new game specifically developed for Steam.

There seems to be some traction building amongst Japanese devs regarding Steam and I am wondering whether Cave are even considering the possibility of porting their games to Steam. Heck, are they even capable to do so in their current position? Are they aware of Treasure's foray into PC gaming?

I haven't been keeping up with Cave news lately but I do know they're not doing very well, even with good sales of their mobile ports. And didn't they just lose Makoto Asada?

What do you guys think?

Is DoDonPachi Saidaioujou worth ¥5000~?

Edit: Also, I'm ordering Espgaluda II Black Label with the soundtrack for ¥3,165 right now. ^^

Edit 2: It is ordered.

With the soundtrack? Is that the limited edition? Be warned the limited edition is NOT region free.

The limited edition is the one that originally came with a faceplate. I can't remember if standard editions had the soundtrack included.

Saidaoujou is being released as a Platinum Collection title next month so it will be super cheap then. That being said I still think it's worth every penny, what an awesome game.

Thank you! I actually checked and double checked before I ordered. It's the normal edition packaged with the soundtrack~

I saw that! And the platinum will be region free, too?

Kinda bummed no one else posted their shmup/Cave text message sounds haha. Hoping I'm not the only one that does that, I love the furari one I have but it's getting a bit old now. Seriously, if anyone has any I'd greatly love to have them on my phone.

I'd be very surprised if they ever make another game worth talking about.

I'd like it, but I'd be surprised - plus they've EOL'd their hardware platform so it would be awful Nesica crap.

Safe assumption to make. Historically all the Cave platinum releases retain the original region code data.
Huh. I guess I didn't realize this.
Was Espgaluda II Black Label Platinum confirmed to work on North American systems? I see it works with PAL.

My J360's DVD drive died. How lame is that? The tray works, but the discs don't read. It's a Jasper.

Gives me an excuse to order one of the 2013 ones, though.

I really like SDOJ but, if you don't already know, it's a major ball kicker.

ESPGII isn't exactly a walk in the park either but they're both great games IMO.

No, Dodonpachi Saidaioujou (SDOJ) is Arcade/360 only. Blissful Death is Dodonpachi Daioujou (DOJ).

Ah, those names. What do they translate to anyways? Is Blissful Death accurate? I recognize the first two characters which would be "biggest" or probably "greatest" or something but I don't know the last two.

Major ball kicker? Ouch...
The novice mode is pretty nice though, and novice-expert is a nice step up between novice and the normal arcade mode (and normal-expert is another step beyond that).

(There's also 360 mode which is its own beast but I never really got into it)

I decided to just try it at the arcade today. It's not too crazy. Pretty fun. I'm not too good, though. Playing on a cab is so different! I'm not used to having to move my eyes around as much.

What I really want to know is... what on Earth is this game?? It looks insane. I watched a guy play it for a while. Does anyone recognize it?

Crimson Clover started as a doujin PC game and then moved to the arcades, I think you can still find the free demo for PC if you want to try it.

Buy lives, buy continues and it aint cheap at all. Forces you to go for score or go home. GET THIS GAME.

The guy I was watching must have been playing on super-duper-hardcore mode, or the arcade version is much more intense. The screen was so full of bullets, that I had a hard time comprehending what was happening.

Where can I buy Crimzon Clover? The game looks amazing

Lately its been places like ebay and used sellers. The website that was linked in here that I bought it from doesn't have it listed anymore. Think it was sk8tokyo...either way its gone now. Best shot is to hit up shmups system 11 or possibly contact Nyu media to ask if they know whose selling it since at one point they sounded like they were after it and got beaten to it.

Here is the link to the demo if that helps

I'm sure if you private message Rancor he can tell you if it's readily available. I've asked him for stuff that isn't listed on his site and he can typically get it. he actually just got me a battle garegga japanese pcb a couple weeks ago :) super nice guy

I emailed sk8tokyo about Crimzon Clover and he said it is out of print and he sold his last copy earlier this week - can't believe my luck, so disappointing. He said if they ever do a reprint he will buy more copies, but from what I have read that seems like it may never happen.

Just wanted to pop in and say how much i love Espgaluda II BL! My absolute favorite Cave game, second only to Mushi Futari, then DOJ.

Oh how i wish there was an arcade accurate version of DOJ that didnt require owning a Japanese 360...

Is that Jeff, aka Rancor, from the SHMUPS forum? He can usually find you anything. He has helped me obtain at least $1000 in console goods over the years.

It's not just available for download? Too bad it didn't come on 360, I actually like console ports of shumps because I like physically owning the game.
