I emailed sk8tokyo about Crimzon Clover and he said it is out of print and he sold his last copy earlier this week - can't believe my luck, so disappointing. He said if they ever do a reprint he will buy more copies, but from what I have read that seems like it may never happen.

I bet it really is hard to find then.

I'd say then the next best option is to keep your eye on yahoo auctions japan or try to put up sale threads on marketplaces like the shmups forums.

looks like the last one to sell tho (other than Rancor's from his site) was back in Jan 2013

Got Ketsui PS3 today, and X Mode is a complete blast, love it!
Graphics look fantastic using the previous tip of setting it to 93-94% overscan. Loved that I could move the screen position freely as well, makes me no have to tilt my head upwards when in TATE since I could just position the picture at the bottom of my monitor.

The bullet patterns in this game are just completely ridiculous, what the hell. So creative and weird, haven't seen any of this before in a Cave game.

ketsui patterns are very similar to the flow/organic feel of Progear bullet spreads. It was even mentioned recently in one of the more recent STG Weekly's on Progear.

IMO Progear's bullet patterns are made up of pure bliss and beauty. I've been playing it via emulation on my PSP lately and it's so damn awesome to have Progear on a portable.

didn't even know that was possible on the PSP - very cool

CPS2 has been on PSP for like 9 years now thanks to programmer called NJ, who also did a good MVS emulator.

Most people think fighting games when they hear CPS2, but Raizing's Dimahoo, Takumi's Mars Matrix, and Cave's Progear no Arashi all were developed for that hardware.

and I agree! ;)

Yeah, it runs well enough that it's certainly playable. That moment at the end of the stage 2 boss is amazing when the bullets just fill the screen with slowdown and you are just navigating though the tight spaces; so much fun.

I ordered the platinum version of SDOJ, but it looks like amiami still has copies of the LE for 40% off, which is super tempting. Thinking about just getting that instead, but if the rerelease has all the bugfixes and stuff on-disc I think I'd prefer that version. How common is it that plat versions are up-to-date reprints? Patches are a bit of a concern for me since the 360 only retains them for a small number of games before overwriting.

Is that still the case? I thought I read somewhere that they changed this with a firmware update a while ago.

I have no idea, but I had to download a patch for NG2 after not having played it in about a year. Might be something else going on though.

You can place title updates on USB drives and install them offline, I'm pretty sure.

I do wish I could just have them install to the HD, though.

I have a question for people who follow Cave console releases. Is there reason to believe that Ketsui PS3 will become rare down the line? If it does, how long would it take? I'm interested in buying it, but it's a little bit expensive for me right now (not expecting it to drop though), and I want to know how long I could wait before the price skyrockets (in case it does).

Not actually that important

Possibly yes, not in the next few months but considering I unfortunately don't forsee a Best Price version coming considering the X360 port never had a Platinum sku andKetsui PS3 sold way less (there's gotta be probably 7/10k copies stored in warehouses/on the wild...) I'm in the same exact situation, I'll probably end up buying it used-like new for €35 in the next couple of months. I don't wanna spend much for it 'cause it pisses me off how barebones the release is and I don't have a proper collection on PS3 (just PSN stuff, Gradius V e Raiden IV soon) so it's less likely I'll keep the console plugged to a TV in the future when I'm done with my backlog.

I was actually on the verge of buying it 10 minutes ago but I ended up getting Shooting Love 10th Anniversary 'cause I Lund it for €33 and to me it was too great of price to say no.
I've put Mario3DWorld back in the wish list for it tho :/

But hey, I love the Raiden Fighters series and always enjoyed XII Stag on PS2.

My Google skills are fading - is there a list of region-free Cave Xbox 360 shooters? I know Akai Katana, Deathsmiles and DoDonPachi got a UK release.

- Mushihimesama Futari
- Espgaluda 2 (only the standard edition, not the LE)
- DoDonPachi Saidaioujou
- Muchi Muchi Pork & Pink Sweets

+ Guwange is on XBLA.

aesthetically DS2 sucks, but the scoring is so much fun that it was definitely worth importing for J360. I actually sunk more time into DS2 than I did the original DS.

What's the shoot 'em store of choice in Tokyo? I saw DoDonPachi Saidaioujou in a shop up in Sapporo last week, but decided to wait til I was back here to buy it. And yet, they didn't have the platinums at the Yodobashi or Bic I went to. Obviously, I could just use Amazon, but knowing this for future reference might be nice, too. I never really go to game specialty stores.

Saw this on shmups. Cave is rereleasing the Cave Box on amazon.co.jp again but also including SDOJ. $260 and $300 for importers with proxy. Don't sleep on it if you missed it last time! May 22nd. Worth a double-dip for me since it has SDOJ!

Nice, thanks for the heads up. This is a great deal for folks new to Cave.

Doesn't Cave have a Visual Novel on 360 that includes a port of DoDonPachi? I wish they included that too.

instant brain and the port sucks - can't remap controls nor adjust screen size/resolution. I think I bought it for like 30 USD last year.

not hard to believe that CAVE is still milking their back catalogue. This time it doesn't include the DLC disc nor the OST... but at least it has SDOJ which people were complaining about last release.

Broke as hell this year as well, so I won´t be able to get the Kan box. Oh well, it´s not like the standalone releases have faded into oblivion. Still have to get Saidaioujou somehow.

That is my biggest gripe about the set. It would be ace if they gave you an unlocked version of Kinect DoDonPachi. As it is, the set still remaind incomplete in my eyes.

No worries.

My only real exposure to these are the iOS versions of Esp 2 and Deathsmiles. Really looking forward to getting stuck into these!

For those more familiar with these games, which do you suggest I start with?
Whichever you like more.

...but on default difficulty at least, Espgaluda II can be brutal until you start getting used to the patterns and mechanics (if you want to maximize scoring at least). Deathsmiles can be pretty easy since it gives some options on path and rank while you progress, so if you want to sort of ease yourself in I guess that'd be better to start with.

And in both cases you'll finally get to use real buttons! It's a big deal in both (and a big impediment to scoring in general for the Cave iOS ports) but I think it's a bigger deal for Espgaluda II. Then again it's been a while since I've played DS and never got too into the scoring on that one (and I think the iOS version had the most button options of their ports so it played a bit better if you were willing to deal with it).

Death Smiles is probably the easiest to get into, as you can choose difficulty and stages, but be warned: if you play all levels at the lowest rank the final level will look brutally hard in comparison. It's also quite unforgiving as far as scoring goes, because the skull counter carries over from one stage to another, so if you fuck up a recharge your whole run is ruined, kinda like Guwange. In games like Mushi or Ketsui you can make a mistake without affecting your score in the other levels.

I think Mushi Futari is another good game to start with, it has a ton of different modes and aside from the standard Novice modes (not really worth playing, imho) it has a very easy arrange mode and Original Black Label is quite easy to 1CC too (your shot is so powerful the bosses won't live long enough to be able to use their worst patterns). On the other hand, Maniac mode is damn hard and good luck if you try Ultra/God mode. Futari has everything!

Right? I want to pick it up, but it'll be the most expensive copy of Akai Katana I'd ever buy.
