The N-Word Controversy: Comedian Tim Allen Questions Why He Can't Say N*****

I really wish people would stop self censoring the word 'nigger'.

If you have good cause to say then fucking say it!

Censoring yourself just gives the word more power.

Repeat after me: nigger, nigger nigger nigger nigger, nigger nigger nigger nigger, nigger nigger nigger. BAM, the scare is gone.
If you're black and someone says nigger to you in derogatory fashion you have the right to falcon punch him in the face, but that applies to every derogatory word.. and race.

good, at least be real with it

What's this European male shit? He is a white American male.

I don't have a problem with anyone using the word in a discussion about its use (Although I would use "N-word"), or even as part of a routine where its being quoted or argued about, and not being used as a weapon against people.

Comedians who use it, should damn well know what they are doing, I'm not confident Tim Allen qualifies.

I don't use it, except when getting carried away "singing along" to hip hop.

That's bullshit, in this particular case because the story would make no sense without including the race of the people who gave me the permission to use the word in question. In fact, whenever you generalize about anything, you are wrong by definition, whether it's about one word or a set of words.

So maybe YOU should stop and reevaluate what you're saying.

The point was, that I DON'T say it...and tried to get my black friends not to say it either...but they wouldn't go for it.
I highly doubt any black person or group of black people gave you permission to call them NIGGERS. And that you're trying to tell me otherwise immediately makes me suspect of your claim of having tons of black pals.

Nonsensical or not, there are two words being discussed here and it has been my experience that the people who always get caught up in this topic are the ones who can't differentiate between the two.

Just look up the controversy. No one cares she called the robber a nigger. People care she wanted her black employees to be slaves and for her to be their master in a plantation themed wedding.

Quite a lot of people care she used the racial slur (ie. the N word). Actually the media critized her more about using the N word than they did about her wanting to dress up her black employees as slaves.

The really surprising thing here is that people are paying to see him do stand up.

I've never seen any of his stand up, maybe it's like with Bob Saget. He does this family friendly show but his stand up is dirty and raunchy as hell.

He's genetically European. That one poster was alluding to a genetic deficiency found in white people that makes them intellectually inferior or something. It was satire, of course.

He probably did talk to Wilson first. This sounds like one of those situations where Wilson gave him sage advice, and now he's trying to explain it to someone else and totally fucking it up.
You're right, this is exactly how it would play out. Hopefully everyone has a good hug at the end of the episode. Unless this is GothMark era.

To some people it's just another word. same with faggot, bitch, cunt, slut etc. my friends would go on calling themselves these words daily in a playful manner. They weren't all or mostly white kids either. They will never understand why these words offend a certain type of person because they haven't been through what others have and because the words are pretty much popular culture and heard everywhere.. But telling them" that's our word" sure as hell won't work either. Should they use other words? yes. But people should also realize the intent behind it's use and not get completely up in arms over it and start calling people racists. It's a complicated situation where neither side can see the world through the others eyes and it will probably never change. Outrage all around.

When I was an older teen there was a fad of white kids using the word nigger to refer to anything they thought was bad or stupid or fucked up. So if someone told them something or did something they didn't like, they were a 'nigger'. Or if door was stuck or a box was hard to open, the door was 'being a nigger', a car that wouldn't start was 'being a nigger'. Some of you may have encountered it. Some of you probably did it.

It was a display of sheltered ignorance and entitlement and disdain that I didn't see often. A personal freedom to use that word to describe everything negative in the world, and they didn't understand the origin or the irony. They certainly don't give a damn about the true misery. I wish I could impart it onto you so you could understand. But words fail.

I still hear the nword being used exactly like that when I play games online still. So it is still pretty normal to use it that way.

The day the KKK or Aryan Nation no longer exist, white guys start calling each other "N"""a" will be the day N"""er loose its impact. Its a trip, to hear two Filipino guys call each other "N"""a" and not be offended.

To speak seriously about this stupid subject for a second: when is there a good cause to say it?

That's what confuses me about this question and whenever I ask it that's how I want to respond. Why exactly do you want to say nigger and for what reason would you ever have to? I even take issue when my own race says it but at the same time I get it. You grow up around people saying it every five seconds naturally it's going to work it's way into your vocab. But other races? What cause? When? Why? There are so many other words to use in it's place.

It's such a dumb question.

Radical idea here...but bear with me....

How about people just accept that there are some things some people aren't allowed to say. If you can't work out why you can't say it, then that's ALL THE MORE reason for you not to say it.

Really isn't rocket science.

This very discussion. Is discussing the word 'nigger' not good cause to use it?

Because that is not true.

Tim has to understand: right or wrong, it's not worth using the word.

Really, t's just not worth using it in ANY context, because you have to trust people can put themselves in your shoes and see what you mean in the context of the situation, which is not a safe bet. As a white person, it will NEVER help you to say it, and you honestly probably have no real necessity to use the word.

I'll tell you this much, though: The Apology Tour (Kramer, Deen) almost never helps, so when public figures slip up, they should just shut up and hope maybe it blows over. I think it helped Dog the Bounty Hunter, but man, he graveled like a fool for months to get his gig back.

hah, I haven't used a headset with a stranger in 3 years. But you're right. I forgot about Xbox Live.

I think it's probably time to start kicking the asses of the youth.

Yes. When racism is over I will drop in on my white neighbor like "whassup my nigga" and he will hug me and say "myyyy nigger!", Because you have to stress the R of such a proper word that isn't at all a southern bastardization of a spanish word for black, "welcome into my home, brother!" And then we'll go eat Korean BBQ.

I don't say it because I don't feel compelled to. It just doesn't apply to anything in my life except these discussions about the word itself. For me, it may as well be Latin. If fully black people do (I only qualify because Im half), that's their prerogative. I don't feel compelled to say lunting or jirble but if other people want to that's cool. I don't feel repressed for not saying it. Why and where would I even use it?

When I use the word nigger it upsets people. I have no particular reason to use the word outside of discussions about whether or not I should be using the word. It's the easiest thing in the world for me to not use it. I'm not missing an essential part of my vocabulary.

For anyone that wants to say the word, go up to the Rucker in Harlem on a game night and greet everyone as "hey my ninja what's really hood?" and report back your findings.

Double standards suck. Women call each other "bitch" all the time, but if a man says it, there's hell to pay. Black people kill each other every day, but if a Hispanic guy in Florida does it, there's outrage. The US government is constantly doing shady shit to control other countries and even its own citizens through intimidation, violence, or fear. But if someone else does it in this country or another, they are terrorists.

As a white dude with lots of black friends, I've been "given permission" to use the word "nigger" around them because, I was told, "You're one of us." I turned it around on them and said, "How about I treat you like white people then and forbid you all from saying it?" To which nobody would ever agree.

I guess no black people have ever gotten acquitted after killing someone in this country?

Smh

I don't agree with Tim because I don't think anyone should say it anymore black people included.

I really hope that one day we as black people will let the word go, we can't keep owning it for the rest of our existence. When will enough be enough? I've a couple of people call me a nigger expecting to get this huge reaction out of me and you know what. I laughed at them and walked away, their fuming faces when they got nothing was priceless.

Once again, this sound awfully like how the words "faggot" or "gay" are often used. For a forum that has such a significant LBGT population, frequent discussions about gay rights and homophobia, and makes strides to make it as welcoming as possible to the LBGT community, it's hard for me to understand why so many here so readily push racial discussions to the side, defend racism, or act like it's no big deal.

Why do people want to say this word so badly, knowing the history and context behind it? What do you gain?

Exactly. I want to hear a good answer to that first question so badly.

I really think they just don't understand the outrage. As people who never suffered the sting from it they never will. The fact that the word has such common use by the race which it offends most also baffles them.

Why do people want to say this word so badly, knowing the history and context behind it? What do you gain?

Precisely my curiosity as well. It's one thing to say the word if it applies in a conversation, most usually referring to something that someone else said. However, it just seems like some comedians are running out of material and want to dip their pen in the forbidden ink.

It's like white people feel left out of the oh so elusive society of people who say a word with a disturbing history stemmed in racism, bigotry, and hatred.

Allow Larry David to illustrate the conundrum of using this word:
