Sony Pictures is bringing the RoboCop remake to comic-con this year, a good six months before it hits theaters on February 7th, 2014. I hit up a group interview prior to the film’s panel. Present were Director Jose Padilha and stars Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson, Joel Kinnaman and Abbie Cornish.

When asked about the film’s rating, Padilha said they were pretty much aiming for a PG-13. “We were shooting the movie to be seen by the broadest possible audience, which means PG-13. This whole idea about ‘RoboCop’ has to be “R” because the first one was amazingly violent… I never really bought into that. You know, ‘The Dark Knight’ was PG-13, so you can get away with a lot.”

Sam Jackson added, “It would be “R” for its time, not “R” now. Padilla agreed, “Yeah, maybe now it isn’t.”

While I love Mr. Jackson, I strongly disagree that the original would be PG-13 today, just think about the amount of gore in that thing. As for Mr. Padiha’s initial statement, I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt until I see the film.

"Robocop is aiming for Total Recall levels of bad."

Except this reboot won't even have Bryan Cranston and Kate Beckinsale.

LOL at the TDK excuse.

Same one employed by McG

What's funny is that even in The Dark Knight there are annoying moments due to the PG13 rating. No screaming when you get your face cut or lit on fire in TDK universe. Not that the answer should have been go for an R rating, but that shit should have been done better.

Yep, I'm out.

Would have probably waited for Netflix/Prime anyway, but yeah. Unless the trailers and word of mouth are amazing (unlikely given all the studio intervention) I'm probably skipping this altogether.

The movie has a big budget and the lead isn't a bankable star. Even with a bankable star it would be hard to make an R rated movie with a budget 100mill +.

Saying that Robocop would be PG-13 today is absolute bullshit. That movie was a very hard R with lots of violence and plenty of F-bombs.

This movie sounds like a complete disaster.

Now it's official. The thing about that script that leaked, though, is that it was super violent at times. I'm going to say the final cut is toned down, because the way some things are done in the script were pretty violent and gruesome sounding.

But don't worry kids, we'll released a super hardcore 'bitches please would you mind leaving' extended uncut edition later on DVD with two minutes of additional footage and a few more 'fucks' thrown in to show we're totally badass

So don't make a movie that costs $100+ million. Nobody wants to see Samuel Jackson in a fucking Robocop remake, and I'm sure he got the biggest check out of everyone in the movie.
