We need Robocop vs Terminator

I look forward to the watered down PG-13 aborted remakes of Pulp Fiction, Silence of the Lambs and Fight Club we'll be getting in the next 20 years.

Fucking Hollywood has already fucked Total Recall, Terminator, Die Hard and Robocop

Remakes of Pulp Fiction and Silence of the Lambs seem almost unfeasible.

...until I remember the Psycho remake actually was a thing.

Remember 1993 when Hollywood made Robocop 3 into a PG-13 super hero movie aimed at kids? Remember how great that turned out? Fucking Hollywood.

Robocop 3 was such a huge 180 from Robocop 2. If I remember correctly, the producers on Robocop 2 were pushing to make the sequel more violent than the first film. Unfortunately though (and not too surprisingly) Robocop 2 was a box office flop and made them rethink the direction of Robocop 3.

The original Robocop still got it so we don´t really need a remake anyway.

Pretty much. I get the feeling that there will still be only one good Robocop movie after the remake comes out.

Original Robocop became surprisingly popular with kids, which lead to aggressive merchandising and even a cartoon series. I guess they're hoping lightning strikes twice, so even more reason to go PG-13.

Thing is, the original reached kids even WITH the R rating.

Apparently you have too.

No, but if the bullets were to miss the article wouldnt make sense.

Also, to comment about the violence - a movie can be good (or bad) even if it doenst have ultra violence. The Total Recall remake was not bad because it lacked the violence of the original, it was bad because of a terrible script and unlikeable characters. If it were to have the same violence on top of that it would still have been bad.

According to the SDCC panel a lot of people liked the footage shown so even if this one doesnt seem to have the same ultra violence as the original, it can still be a good movie.

EDIT: which reminds me, if it hasnt been posted before, here is the panel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=o_eZWdX5X-s

A rating does not make a good movie and there would no point in doing Verhoven's movie again. It sounds like Padhilla's movie has something to say about our world and considering the man has never made a bad movie, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Why give Hollywood the benefit of the doubt at this point? Can someone name one (1) modern remake that was even remotely worth anything?

3:10 To Yuma
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
True Grit
Casino Royale
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Evil Dead
Dawn of the Dead
Oceans Eleven

Haven't watched it personally but couple of my friends weren't impressed so I haven't even tried to track it down. Better than original, then? Was it pg-13 like this Robocop here?

Nothing beats the original but I would say it's 50/50. While the original were more about atmosphere and scary sounds the remake had gore and stuff.

Well worth the watch.

Avoid Texas Chainsaw 3D though. :P

And the remake was rated R.
Rated R for strong horror violence/gore, language and drug content

Don't these people get that the over the top violence and social commentary made this much more enjoyable than the material deserved to be? This is going to be as joyless and sterile as the Total Recall remake.

TCM 2003 is completely different than the original, which is what makes it good. The original TCM has almost no blood or gore at all, but a disgusting atmosphere and style that makes it feel like a snuff film.

TCM 2003 has a ton of gore, different and expanded back story, while retaining the gross and dirty atmosphere. Too many remakes try to both be too much like the original and too far on their own at the same time and they don't work out. Like the ANOES remake. It added zero to the story and all the references and redone shots actually look worse than stuff from 1984 (particularly the scene with Freddy stretching out the wall, which looks AWFUL in CGI and still looks amazing in the original with a dude and some spandex.

I really doubt this will be worse than Robocop 3. Or the Canadian mini series that was even worse than 3.

It's not so much the rating itself, it is the aiming for a particular rating that removes any last shred of interest. And yeah, if they showed a kid actually getting shot in a visceral manner, it ain't going to be PG13. Unless you think Biebers death scene was well done :/

I wouldn't go that far, I'm sure José Padilha has a little more visual flare than Mr. Len "lets desaturate everything with filters" Wiseman. In every visual and literal sense the Total Recall remake took out any contrasting elements that the original film may have had and just blandified everything. I fell asleep near the end of the movie, and I had no desire to re-watch what I missed. I'll stick with the crazy Verhoeven/ Schwarzenegger version.

To me what made the original Robocop so good was that it had a lot of layers to it as a film. It does have some interesting underlying tones to it, the decaying factory backdrops in contrast to the sleeker office buildings, corporate buyout of an entire city, a cast of characters with their own self serving motivations, lots of cynical social commentary with violence peppered in for extra effect. The original movie had a lot of cool things going for it, and it still works even today (though there is an 80's Reaganomics vibe in the original film as well).

A lot of things here that could be translated over to a more modern timeline and still be relevant. But here it feels like they are making some missteps with this one. I'm still going to go see it, but I don't have the highest hopes.
