The new Robocop is aiming for a PG-13 rating

The movie has a big budget and the lead isn't a bankable star. Even with a bankable star it would be hard to make an R rated movie with a budget 100mill +.

This turn of phrase is almost entirely meaningless.

Hollywood hasn't been about the star-system since around 1997. The number of movies that get by solely on star-power are maybe what - one? Two?

"Bankable Stars" aren't anywhere near as big a factor on a movie's success as they used to be.

The "Bankable Star" is the name "Robocop." It literally does not matter who plays him, so long as he's an adult male who has a chin.

just watched the original 2 days ago

this is indeed depressing news. feel bad for Padilla, he probably could have made a great movie without producer interference

Saying that Robocop would be PG-13 today is absolute bullshit. That movie was a very hard R with lots of violence and plenty of F-bombs.

This movie sounds like a complete disaster.

Thing is, most of that scene was cut out as the MPAA refused to give the film a rating with it in place. You can only get the uncut version on the unrated DVD/Blu-Ray.

An R rated movie with a big budget is going to need something to sell it. Either the director, lead, or the IP. R rated movies have the hurdle of parents not wanting to bring their kids to see them so you lose a lot of sales. PG-13 movies you will see a lot of families no matter how much violence or sexual content is in the movie.

Anyone that knows anything about Robocop knows these people are full of shit. The original almost got an X rating. No way in hell would it get a PG13 rating.

And yeah, Jackson's full of shit on the quote that Robocop would be a PG-13 now. Murphy getting his hand shot off, ED-209's first demonstration, Robocop's dispatching of Boddicker, Emil's car-wash impersonation - none of that fits under PG-13.

That's not even getting into the real reason things get rated R in America: Too many fuck-words.

Robocop would absolutely still be rated R if it came out in 2013.

All of that is known. It doesn't address the fact that "bankable star" isn't really a factor in most movie's greenlighting, planning, or marketing.

Producers prefer it that way. Almost everyone in hollywood but the actors prefer it that way. And the system has been tilted towards making sure that atmosphere is maintained over the past 10-20 years.

They keep saying the wrong things about this movie. I want to root for Padilha, but this is looking like a disaster.

If the satire is solid, it'll still have some worth.

The only real reason Robocop has survived like it has, is due to the fact the satire was on point, and stayed relevant through the years.

Yeah, this scene alone the guy says it about 10 times.

So Samuel Jackson is under the impression that movie ratings are less harsh today then in the 80's? Is he fucking high (well ok yea, he probably was)?

Robocop's first submission to the MPAA earned it an X rating for violence. They had to cut this gem down to get an R.

What sucks about that cut was it ended up nerfing the satire. The original version of that scene was COMEDIC because ED just wouldn't stop shooting the dude. By making them cut that scene, it just ended up being violent, not silly.

Disaster? Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?

All the films that studios are super, duper confident about are delayed for months and then come out in February.

Everyone knows that.

The Dark Knight had no violence on screen. Hell did we even see a drop of blood in that one?

Why do these nut jobs keep bringing up that movie as some sort of barometer for the kind of shit you can get away with in PG13. It's ridiculous, just because it was dark and grim...

"Robocop is aiming for Total Recall levels of bad."

Except this reboot won't even have Bryan Cranston and Kate Beckinsale.

You know, I wouldn't even say the Total Recall reboot was bad. It was just dreadfully boring. I rented it and was only able to watch up until some scene with them at the piano. I just lost interest after that. It felt like a movie that was 10 years behind its time.

The best part is the guy in the back that says .. "will someone call an ambulance" hahahah

Sam Jackson added, “It would be “R” for its time, not “R” now. Padilla agreed, “Yeah, maybe now it isn’t.”

No, Sam, the theatrical version of RoboCop would still be R-rated today. As much of the violence they cut out from the deaths of Murphy and Mr. Kenny, it's still a pretty brutally violent film.

Any dialogue from the robocop? I'm eager to hear his voice!

Dead or alive... you're coming with me!

Silas Lesnick:
They are really winning over this crowd! The footage looks great!

Silas Lesnick:
We see a couple different RoboCop designs, including one that looks just like the original.

5:24

Silas Lesnick:
The original design is actually pitched to Keaton's character and he doesn't like it. He says he wants it changed and likes black as a color.

Silas Lesnick:
But there's a flash later in the footage of Kinnaman in parts of the original suit.

So what they're saying is that this hunk of shit is going to be a hunk of shit aimed at kids. Good to know. As far as I'm concerned this abomination doesn't exist and never will. It's really that simple.

I wouldn't even buy it for a dollar.

How did Padilha fall on that trap, the guy on both Elite Squad gave the audience hardcore violence and wanted to follow that path with robocop, and now he accept to tone down a violent classic like Robocop? Hell no i'm disappointed

Look Robocop was a master piece....I actually loved 2 ..... and 3 ...well it doesn't exist.

Any there's no reason to hate on a PG-13 Robocop....yet

Are you serious? PG-13? That's disappointing.

Here's hoping they don't do the same to Mad Max remake (do we already know what the aimed rating is for that one?)

100% it'll be PG-13. That one however can probably get away with it, it was never an overly bloody series.
