The Nostalgia Critic |OT| He Remembers It So You Don't Have To

True, still wasn't NC burned by YT before?

Years ago.
The main reviews will be still be through Blip... and the League of Super Critics YouTube channel. However, that one is owned by Blip.
The one with the Making Of is the official Channel Awesome YouTube account. it will very likely not showcase copyrighted footage.

The Purge

Huh... I felt this movie had a good concept. I didn't know they played it THIS badly.

Actual Pinky and the Brain cameo. Amazing.

10-1 I bet you think NC only films through a webcam

I've seen most of his stuff including the more polished pieces he's put out in recent times. It's still weak as all hell. His work is the very model example of quantity over quality. He's not particularly funny, unless you like shrill, sarcastic screaming and his opinions are popular to the point of redundancy.

But seeing as quantity is what matters online he's golden.

I'm pretty sure I have literally never even heard of this movie. He seems strangely convinced that this is some watershed film, but opening #1 against... The Internship is not exactly a worldchanging box office win...

It cost $3 million to make and made $89 million worldwide.
A friend of mine wore a Purge mask for Halloween (or some similar event).

It wasn't a humungous hit, but it still turned over an immense profit ($89 million revenue on a $3 million budget).

I think Brad Jones put it best: The Purge had an interesting idea that turned out to be a rather generic home invasion film. That's probably why the sequel has been getting better reviews, because it actually tries to explore its concept with a more meaty plot.

Sure, I won't deny it was clearly a success, but Blair Witch this ain't. For all the names involved in it, $89 mil isn't even all that good.

Yeah, that's the main reason why I heard people didn't like the film. It's mainly untapped potential. A day where people can do ANYTHING illegal, like sell drugs, hack into banks & steal money, research viruses & biological warfare, hunt endangered animals, steal information from the government, all sorts of things, & it's just trying to break into someone's home. I've also heard people who didn't like the original are liking the sequel much better.

He had the Animaniacs people on a past episode, so they could probably put him in contact with Maurice and Rob.

Doug has worked with Rob Paulsen in the past (one of the few Demo Reel videos he made involved him), and has mentioned him in Facebook posts. I think he asked if he could do this and agreed, as well as getting Maurice to do it to.

Wouldn't be the first time hearing Pinky and the Brain curse. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvRCT-hPAZ4

Not only did you try to push a blanket subjective reasoning as though it's objective, you also insulted people who actually like his work! Bravo.

Stating an opinion as a fact is trying to argue. Also stating an opinion without expecting any form of people arguing with it is pretty dumb.

Just an internet opinion, peevishly phrased.

But let's not pretend you didn't generalise in your response.

Didn't want to start anything. I was surprised by how much effort from a production stand point his stuff takes considering the end product. I really don't see the fruits of that effort in the final product.

Going by this movie's logic, the Purge was done to "get aggression out"
But as you mentioned, there are other crimes that rely not on aggression or anger. Stealing government secrets for one. If someone were to do that, and sell those secrets to an enemy nation within the Purge, America would be fucked.

I didn't. Hell, I'm very open to the fact that he produced shit and will 100% agree on that part. Just find it odd that people would say he produces "quantity over quality".

Oh, you mean EVERYDAY in the HISTORY OF MANKIND?

The Purge is a really flawed concept that tries to be smart, but in the end, is just used as a rule to show anarchy. That would be fine if they tried something else. Hell, post apocalyptic terror worlds like in Mad Max or Escape from New York are more believable as possible future scenarios that one where all crime disappears because one night of anarcy, and all need to commit crime stems from our natural aggression(hence "releasing the beast" makes us more peaceful via venting our violence... and bullshit like that). As others said, not all crime is tied to anger. I've basically talked to someone regarding my feelings on the idea. I would've liked if they actually played it two different ways, but both stemming from a concept where the government put the PEOPLE in charge of ridding the United States of criminals(violent criminals), y'know, to make the streets safer and fix that "overcrowded prison" thing:

1. Once each year, each household is sent a criminal to "dispatch". If, in cases where the criminal has ties to a family(say a drunk driver killed a son, or a pedophile did sick things to someone's kid), they get priority over others to deal with that criminal specifically. If more than one family/household has been harmed by a criminal(a serial killer with many victims), the families draw lots to whom gets him, or, if they are generous, invite the other families over to have a party where all of them get to take turns torturing the criminal. Two highly trained armed guards accompany the criminal(to make sure he/she doesn't escape as well as makes sure the household delivers "justice" before the next morning(6am the following morning). If not, the household is fined for refusing to "do their duty" as American citizens.

2. One night, each year, the government sponsors a great hunt for vigilantes. Each year, a different type of criminal goes "in season". One year, it might be sex offenders, while the next, it might be gang members. The information of all those "in season" are posted on the internet(including addresses and such). Hunters are given mounted cameras that record their treks and are set loose into the night to catch their prey. Hunters(anybody can be a hunter, as long as they aren't "in season" and must sign in at one of the many outpost offices that are set up around the nation to be fitted with a camera) must bring proof of kill(many opt for the classic "sack of decapitated heads") to the government outposts while their footage is reviewed(they can't kill or harm those not "in season", nor innocents or fellow hunters), and each kill nabs them an award(money).

That's just me, though. I thought that's what the movie was originally going to be like, considering it was originally going to be called Vigilandia(though it was going to have something to do with vigilantes run amok, which I find the concept of THAT more interesting because it seems to be done for the greater good, yet makes us question if are allowed the power and freedom to go apeshit on murders, rapists, child molesters, is it truly "right"?). And I think of how one this system could be abused, like innocent people being convicted and put on the "lists" for to be "in season' or criminals that have been rehabilitated, but are still sent to be killed by a household(or a household that has forgiven said criminal, but must kill them anyways). Meh, I'm thinking too hard.

In the end, I agree with Brad Jones on the whole, "once you get past the ridiculous idea behind why people purge, the movies are somewhat entertaining" thing, at least that's what he felt about the second movie. I thought the first was a passable home invasion flick, and if the second one is anything like how he described it(likening it to something from the Cannon Group and Arnie's Commando, just pure, fun violent action for the sake of it), I can live with that. All you gotta do is not dwell on the stupid premise.

And yeah, the Pinky and the Brain skit was fuckin' hilarious!!!

alien's trailer is pretty god damn amazing. it's actually really surprising that it's from 1979 when trailers didn't improve in general for another 20 years at least.

Small Soldiers

I remember when Doug wanted the fans to request his "final" review (back when he "retired"), this movie won out, but he felt it didn't have enough to make fun of. Sounds like he found material.

Oh damn, the next review is
Princess Diaries 2
. I remember him stating that he wanted to do a NC review of that when he was doing Disneycember. That's going to be a fun watch.

Princess Diaries.

Princess Bride is one of the best comedies ever and thankfully has no sequel.

I make that mistake sometimes too, and Princess Bride is in my top-5 all time, so don't worry about it.

I hope he has another Nicolas Cage month and does the 2nd Ghost Rider movie. It's got more Cage-moments in it.

"He's...scratching...AT THE DOOR."

"SCRATCHIN' AT THE DOOOOOOOAAHHH!!!!!!!!"

"I'm gonna let him ouuuaaAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!"

Damn, I don't know how I STILL mix those two up. Thanks for the correction, though.

I dunno about a good film, but I certainly enjoyed it as a kid. And it was one of Phil Hartman's final movies.

It's average.

And as expected the review is kinda eh and focuses too much on "being a TS ripoff" even though it isn't. There wasn't much material to work with because it's an average movie.

And I still am annoyed at people saying Antz is a ripoff of A Bug's Life. It implies ABL is good enough to rip off to begin with.

Surprising absences from that list.

None of the LotR films
Superman Returns
The Phantom Menace
He said specially because after Red Letter media did it so well, there is nothing left to say about that movie like NOTHING.
he said all the jokes have been made already and just did not feel like he has anything to add.

I'm talking about his Trailer list, not a full review of the film.

What does it matter if they switch from blip? Don't people watch on their terribly designed main website? So they're not even going to put them up on the main terribly designed website the same day? Boo this man. Boo him. Eh. What do I care.

Any reason for the switch from Blip? And is the Maker player better than Blip? And does it have an HTML5 version? Edit: Nope. No HTML5. COME ONE PEOPLE! IT'S 2014! (I hope it at least plays on iOS devices. Which proves that the video is HTML5 compatible. And that these shitty video sites are purposely keeping HTML5 players from desktop browsers for no reason at all.)

I watch videos on blip because it has an actually working subscription interface. I visit the TGWTG site maybe like once every two months or so.

A couple of years ago, Blip changed their compensation model, basically requiring producers to triple their ad impressions to keep the same income. This was when mid-rolls started showing up on TGWTG content.

Also, Blip has been contracting in recent months, cancelling channels they didn't feel were drawing enough traffic. The casualties included the GameOverthinker show as well as several of the smaller TGWTG producers. With the site bringing on more new producers in recent weeks, they probably want a platform that will be friendlier to up-and-coming content creators.
