The Official Grand Theft Auto IV thread: The World Is Yours

Actually, I love the comments the peds spit out. There have been 3 laugh out loud moments for me and they were all what peds have said.

I am not making this up, these are actual quotes.

"Go f*ck yourself in the a**" - This one really had me rollin
"I will sh*t in your mouth"
And someone called me a "f*ckface" or something like that.

I was actually embarassed and offended and loved every minute of it.

Stupid questions from a newb:

-How do I have a shotgun only a few missions into the game? I did, at one point, find a cop car just sitting by itself, so I jacked it for a while. Did I pick up the shotgun automatically? Confused...

-When the fist appears in the upper right corner of the screen, what's it mean?

Thanks!

Is there a clothing store in Broker aside from Russian store?

Good question. Also, I would have thought that as I ran into and used more restaurants that they would be added to my map. It appears they are not.

I tried to get some MP in last night (have the PS3 version), but it didn't even work. Said it couldn't connect to the game server or some shit like that. Total crap.

- Yes you picked it from the Cop car
- You don't have weapons equipped

Naw she's really loose. You can bang her on the second date if you play your cards right. She never drinks either so...

Thanks. Do dates really care if you take them to a place twice in a row?

I'm pretty sure I picked up the shotgun from an enemy in a very early mission myself so I guess the same happened to you.

The fist means you currently have no weapon selected and if you press attack you'll use your fists to do so.

When should I push my luck with Michelle, when she's good and drunk?
Anytime, she's always up to it. Even after the first date.

Possible spoiler to be read by those who have taken her out on a bunch of dates already:
I think she's a police informant. When you're doing her she's always like "TELL ME MORE NICO" and she never drinks. Also: she asks about Ivan and shit. Fucking suspicious. I don't want to have to kill her later in the game, but I have the feeling I might.

Yeah. If you take them to a specific place their opinion drops by 5, and all similar places drop by 1. If it drops below 25 they refuse to go there.

Where can you find this to see what their opinion is?

The regular ammo store in broker has them. But you might have missed them at first glance..

Not sure, haven't done that yet. But they do seem to have likes and dislikes about where to bring them.

Awesome point.
I've only gone on one date with her but I was really suspicious of her. All the shit in her apartment is new, and she dodge's all of Nico's questions. She's clearly up to no good, either another Mob/gang or the police. I don't trust her.

I hate it, I've been playing the game for 13 hours and i still dont have the city memorized like i did with 3,vc,sa; and i don't feel the need to...

Although I don't mind the GPS I agree that that also results in not memorizing anything anymore. In previous GTA's when my friends were playing and they asked for a gunshop I could usually tell them how to drive by just looking at the street they were in.

But that's just like IRL, with navigation I cant be bothered to remember anything anymore

there's a hidden molotov pickup in the building across from the bowling alley.

speaking of bowling, just bowled 247 with 8 straight strikes :p

I don't think you can, I just know the strategy guide has Michelle's initial opinions of every restaurant and activity.

You can see her overall likeness of you in the stats menu.

Maybe it's a good thing she doesn't want to go out with me anymore.
At one point she sent me a message saying she can't talk so I should stop phoning her.

not going to spoiler tag this because it is so small:

the mission where you go to the porn shop, on the ride there while they are talking in the car, i was listening to the discussion about where they were goign, what they were going to do, etc.

i failed the mission, and when i restarted it and we were riding in the car again, they had a different discussion about the same mission. nico made some joke he didnt make before, they talked about different stuff... i was like 'wtf? i figured it would be the exact same thing as before?'

so they must have filmed several 'takes' for each conversation they did and it randomly picks one with for the mission. i just thought that was crazy, and i cant imagine why they would really do that and put forward so much effort. i was pretty impressed.

kind of dumb post, but..... whatever.

I'm still early on in the game and
I've just done a mission for Faustin to take the rigged truck to the auto parts place and blow it up. Dimitri is now asking me to meet him
. I've been taking my time, I've been going on dates with Michelle (
she is soo an undercover cop
), visited the strip club :D, stealing vehicles for Brucie (I do this because it gives me a lot of cash) and a few other things. I've also been surfing the net, I've been trying to do the online dating on it, does that actually work? And I haven't actually seen any hookers thus far, where are they?

This is one of the first retail games I've played to use the Sixaxis in intuitive ways. The helicopter flight with it made me fell like I was actually piloting a fragile aircraft like a novice and scared every moment. :lol

I only wish the bowling Sixaxis control was like High Velocity Bowling where it triggered on the up swing instead of the down swing.

What is the name of the traffic circle in northern Broker/south Dukes? Anyway, there's a cop car parked in a back alley just east of that landmark. I found it there at night, can't confirm whether it stays there during the day. At any rate it was easy to smash and grab and get away.

ok I need help. I'm still pretty early in the game but
I was chasing that dude across the rooftops for vlad, and I shot him off the roof and fell off with him by mistake. I never called vlad to tell him I finished, and when I went back to that spot there was nothing on the ground. I tried calling everyone, but I haven't gotten any story missions yet
, what should I do? I've gone on a bunch of normal cab quests and dates/hang outs, but nothing seems to happen.

EDIt: and the gamesave says I'm still on
Ivan the Terrible
, so I technically haven't beaten it, yet.

My impressions so far (8ish hours in I think?):

-Obviously the system crashes I'm getting...7 so far...are annoying as fuck. Fix it, Rockstar.

-Terrible framerate outdoors, rarely seems to hit 30 at all. I hear it gets even worse once you get to Manhattan, yikes, not looking forward to that.

-Muddy, blurry, smeary visuals. Cutscene graphics are nice, some minor character model yuckiness aside, but anything in the distance outdoors looks pretty terrible. The scope of the game and the overall amount of unique detail present is very impressive, but the game still looks kinda shitty at any given moment.

-Uncomfortable soundtrack. Commercials are funny but *way* too frequent, and there are barely any stations I seem to actively want to listen to. I was into pretty much all the stations in Vice City and San Andreas (don't remember the GTA3 soundtrack), but I seem to be buried in obscure genres and bands here. I also mainly have no idea what genre each station plays because there are so many of them and their names don't help me out (except for, like, "Liberty Rock" and such). Mostly, though, give it fucking a rest with the commercials, news bulletins, and DJ interruptions; that would be enough for me.

-Awesome animation. Collisions with objects, running, interacting with the environment, people reacting to being shot, it's all amazing stuff.

-Shooting rocks. Cover system is implemented well, shotgun is glorious to use. Bullshit enemies (i.e. guys who aren't gonna be wearing vests) seem to take too many bullets to drop in many cases, but that's where the shotgun comes in. As mentioned, the enemy reactions to being shot are excellent.

-Story rocks. It's well acted, well scripted, well lip-synced, with interesting characters and fun objectives.

-Too many cops around? There are a crapload of cops everywhere. Does their whole system of NPC crime reporting not work well enough, so they used this to compensate?

-Still the same "find a car, suddenly see the car you're driving everywhere" GTA syndrome.

-Driving is fine. Cars react strangely to full accel unless it's at the beginning of a gear...otherwise they'll sometimes bounce off the redline for several seconds for no apparent reason. The game is not depicting any wheelspin under these circumstances, so I have to come to the conclusion that uhhhh they're doing it wrong.

In real life? Is it the Grand Army Plaza?

I thought I saw someone else ask what it was earlier in the thread.

I totally banged Michelle after the second date, and even during sex her dialogue is totally stilted. "YES NIKO, TELL ME MORE!!!" She's totally a cop or up to something shady.

I also love that the dialogue changes if you replay a mission. It makes replays slightly less frustrating.

For those of you looking for weapons early, you can easily pickup the shotgun at the strip club. Just to go the security room where it says "staff only" and there will be a shotgun resting on the wall.

For a gun, if you try go to back from the strip club back to niko's place you'll run into a freeway bridge that's still underconstruction and unfinished(it'll have barriers, just go ahead and break them). If you pedal it and go really fast, you'll jump using the ramp at the end to get to the 2nd portion of that freeway. There is a gun lying there on the floor.

The game save will always say that until you start a new story mission. You should be good to go. Just
go back to Vlad who'll be waiting at the bar and continue from there.

Got a 360, or are you playing on PS3? If you have a 360 you can just play it from the guide menu. You still hear game sounds, minus the car radio since you have your music playing... at least in other games they do that.

I have it on the PS3. I can't play my own music :-(

I disagree with you here. Sure it can look a little blurry sometimes but generally your immediate vicinity and surroundings looks gorgeous. Are yo playing on a HDTV?

I have no idea. I took her to cabaret and there was this magician who did a lame-ass trick and he made his assistant fall. And then came this girl who was singing/saying stuff about losing babies and whatnot. As soon as we came out she remarked how weird the show was. Niko agreed. Then when I got her back home she said she was bored. I cut through her sentence and said bye. And she started acting all pissed off. Women. :lol

Has anyone got a high-res (1920 pref) image of the girl in GTA IV? You know the one, wheres she's got the lolly (its the background shot on PS3 when you put the disc in).

Thanks
