Counter-strike 1.6 and Counter-strike Source are still the most played games on Steam, by far. Counter-strike Source is it's own standalone game, it's sort of a remake on the Source engine with better graphics, and a few gameplay differences. CS 1.6 was on the Quake 2 engine or something.

I'd recommend Counter-strike Source since it's more popular, and the graphics are much more reasonable. CS 1.6 has a more hardcore community, but it looks like ass and I can't stand it for too long.
