The Official NeoGaf Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Thread

I finally finished this game last night, after slow-pace of playing since the US release. I also avoided this thread as a whole since :D

I finished it at level 41 with 18% or 19% of missions done, with no problems beating the final boss (it was actually too easy for me). Its only now reading the last 2 pages I see you can get materia that makes the shit even easier. I just used osmose blade, Vital Slash, Thundaga, wall, and curaga. also the HP++ materia, which gave me 7,000HP.

Overall I LOVED this game. It brought back so many memories of FFVII and i only completed that game once, way back in the year 1999. the music was fantastic (especially the piano theme when you visit Aerith in the church for the second time), Zack was very likable (his animations were joyful, and his character wasnt "too tough" nor "too weak/stupid") . The FMVs were tasty, just like in the PS1 days. Just sad there werent many of them! But i can understand that. And the ending, fantastic and emotional
I love how its just a blank screen at the end of the credits, forcing you to quit game
, that made it a better sense of completion for me.
most games just loop back to the main screen, not given you enough time to take in the final events you just witnessed
. The battle system was fine to me, along with random battles, since its a PSP game. Im just not too sure this system will work console based.

Anyways, i dont know, i love it, and strongly advise those of you that hasn't yet finished it, to do so, which then you will know why this is a true prequel in comparison to that GoW:CoO game.

Just finished the game today with over 22 hours clocked in and about 30% missions done. Man, such a great journey! The ending was just as good as i have ever witnessed in gaming, truely in the top 5 of all time.

Finished the hidden optional boss
Minvera
. The fact that you can steal 99 Phoenix downs from her and do with them as you please just makes boosting stats all too easy. Steal from her, get ko-ed, sell them and repeat.

It's to my understanding that this isn't possible in the Japanese version, as generally getting ko-ed in a mission will automatically lead you to the gameover screen? My condolences to whoevers trying to clear the game with those conditions :lol

I still haven't beaten this game. The villian is so shitty that it's impeding my progress in the final dungeon. Genesis is the worst Final Fantasy villian since FFV's.

I fear what would happen if they remade FfVII. They'd probably infuse Project G even more and include some shitty Gackt character that wasn't in the original game and is worse than Genesis 10 x. He'd probably quote Loveless more than Genesis. The fact the final dungeon is built around Loveless quotes me squirm in revulsion.

Gackt sucks. When Genesis party crashed my nostalgia infused euphoria when in Nibelheim, that was the last fucking straw. Even Sephiroth refused to acknowledge his shitty existence.

I like the game a WHOLE lot but every single time I'm playing genesis shows up from God knows where, and says some retarded Loveless quote. Angeal would have made a much better villian.

I thought the villain of the game was Shinra.

Equip a Lightning Armlet/Thunder Armlet, it'll block some of the damage from those attacks. You can get one in mission 3-2-1 or 4-2-1.

Are the missions toward the end that difficult on Normal, or is it just Hard mode that kicks your ass?

I don't recommend Hard mode for anyone, its an exercise in futility. Normal missions do get challenging towards the end, and it'll definitely make you appreciate that you didn't start out on Hard mode.

just view the ending on youtube, I'm sure the absolute shittiness of every other aspect of the story will just confirm the FFVII fetishists are wrong about that too

I can agree to disagree. From my perspective, as someone who is "neutral" on FFVII and thinks the other games in the compilation are terrible, my expectations weren't for anything amazing. I set them pretty low. But the game came out worse than those.

As fanservice, it was corrupted by "new Nomura taint", inserting things which clearly don't mesh with the rest of the FFVII universe into the story of Zack and piecing apart any nostalgia I can personally gain from it. The writing is just straight up atrocious at times, I nearly cried tears of pure crystallized laughter with the whole "WHAT DO ANGELS DREAM!?" bullshit. The non-stop quoting of Loveless, the bizarrely unfocused narrative regarding Hojo and Hollander. Genesis doesn't even need explanation, that was a mess start-to-finish.

This is just about the story of FFVII Crisis Core, it would have been overcome if the gameplay was any good.

I agree with you about the plot. I don't think it was really was necessary to get that involved. People who played VII came into the game wanting to see two things: Nibelheim and
Zack's death
. And I think they did those parts very well. The rest of the game was a complete mess plot wise. But for me those were my only expectations.

As far as the gameplay, it wasn't horrible, but I haven't touched it since I beat the game, mostly because item hunts aren't my thing really. If there were sidequests, pardon my ignorance if there are, that expanded on the plot, maybe I'd be more interested.

agreed and I am a FF7 fanatic.

Plot was retarded. Genesis quoting loveless got old and annoying fast for me. gameplay too boring, the stupid slot-machine system was annoying and should have worked in real time instead of pausing the game.

The only thing I really liked about the game was the ending, which I thought was well made and most of the FMVs which looked pretty cool.

Game should have just been a movie instead minus the Genesis plot.

quick question, as i feel like I am almost done with the game and sort of just want to put it away.

Why can I not open the
trap door in Shinra Manor?
Seriously, what the hell, I can see it right in front of me, yet I can't do anything?

I beat the game at level 37, took my 17.5hrs

I thought all the characters were ridiculously cliche and Zach was pretty lame, but I still enjoyed the game overall

I just finished the game too; 17.5hrs 22% mission completed. I thought the production value was pretty good, and the ending.

man, that ending was moving. Gah the entire way along the game you know what is going to happen in teh end, and yet you don't want it to,.

Any theory as to who the 2 first class soldiers that picked up Genesis at the end is?

And also, 4 years? Does that mean Cloud and Zack were in the shinra mansion for 4 years? wow

Finally finished the game, picked it up day 1 and been trudging through it since. To be fair, I stopped at that stealth mission for a real long time before finding out I could just kill everyone and not worry about it.

The cut scenes looked amazing, the CGI stuff was awesome. Overall though the story was pretty bad, all the Loveless stuff was just annoying and the inability to skip cut scenes made me put down the game for a week when I got killed by Sephiroth on my first attempt just because I didn't want to sit through 10 minutes of nothing.

The ending was overwrought and overdone.

The combat, however, was awesome. Once you got a little advanced and started tinkering with fusing materia the actual game got to be a blast. Everything around the game, however, was pretty bland.

Yeah, the writing is pretty damn awful.

I liked the story though...apart from the whole Genesis thing. It's terrible.

And don't get me on the slot machine bullshit.

It's a shame, because the story could have been pretty damn good if they just stuck to Zack and Angeal, Sephiroth's decent into madness and the Nibelhem incident, and everything afterwards. I was actually liking the direction that the Zack and Angeal relationship was going, up until
they started introducing crap about Project Genesis, Sephiroth, clones, Jenova Cells, and all that bullcrap in the most haphazard fashion. Oh, and not being able to understand exactly who's side Angeal was on hurt pretty badly too
.

And it's a shame that the DMW stuff really only has a positive impact on the ending scenes, rather than the actual game itself.

As for the game itself, I really just hated how unbalanced things became (on hard mode, at least). Nothing is more frustrating than suddenly getting OHKO'd by enemies in the final dungeon, and an hour long battle with the final boss just because you did not get the game-breaking equipment.

How many times have you said you were finished with this thread? You just can't keep away, can you? :lol

Even with the caveat of "it's fan service" the story in Crisis Core is pretty terrible. Crisis Core is just so random, so scatter brained with how it shoe horning in new elements and characters that aren't really needed. They should've focused on tying pre-existing plot points together, filling in the blanks simply and expanding upon moments from the main game NOT muddying the water even more with lame, superfluous characters, villains and events.

In the end I had to force myself to play through the game, and ultimately I just thought it was ill-conceived fan wankery.

I liked Final Fantasy VII when it first came out and what makes me sad is the reality that all of the crap from Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus and every other spin-off are going to get shoe horned into the eventual remake. Along with being Gackt-ified.

Look at the positive side, Cissnei will probably be a member of the main cast.

I question the logic of those who think this game was poorly written yet think FF7 was well written.

Also, outside of Cloud and Sephiroth, most of the cast in the original game were fairly one-dimensional.

Don't fucking get me started. You're probably one of those people who think AC felt like a natural part of FFVII canon.

Lol for some reason I expected an ending soon after everyother cut scene... I was like I defeated Genesis and Angeal shouldn't this be the end but this game just keeps going :(. I'm even starting to hate the slowness of the game. I just took a long break after starting on find the things to make a wagon.

WHoo. Finally got finished with this after waiting until I was done with Finals...
Tough wait, but definitely worth it in the end.

I'm pretty sure I went through 2 chapters worth of thinking
"Aww... its about to end isn't it."
"Oh no? Sweet."
And Repeat.

I enjoyed it. Definitely was annoyed about the lack of skipping through cutscenes (I wasn't the only one that tried Hard at first, then bailed out because you couldn't get past the Castley-thing-- the one with killing the troops with a progress marked with stars in the very beginning?)

Emotional ending... Aerith sending 89 letters... going nowhere. And Tseng having 88 of 'em. Ahh.

Good game. Had lotsa fun with it!

You certainly weren't. That's exactly where and how I noticed it wouldn't be worth the trouble.

Hey, GAF, I've been wondering, what was Takeharu Ishimoto working on Before CC7 and BC/LO? What's he working on now? His CC7 soundtrack really really impressed me, so much so that I'd say it's probably the best SE soundtrack since FFX/KH1.

Also, who do you think
those 2 SOLDIERs who carried off Genesis were?

Also...

;_;

Mine should appear today too. Although, GameStation overcharged me, so I'm not too happy about that. It will taint the game

Just had a quick go on this.. really nice opening cutscenes, but then I guess that's to be expected from Squenix these days. Can't quite seem to get the hang of this real-time combat system though... I mean, mashing "Attack" is fine for low level grunts but I can see this is going to be problematic when I come up against more powerful enemies.

Also, I guess running games from memory stick has really spoiled me, when I put the disc in I was like "huh, hope that drive still works, I've dropped this thing a couple times" and it does still work, but it's slow and makes clicky-slidey noises. And then there was like a 10 second delay after the PSP jingle screen and I was like "shit, I hope it's not broken" but then I remembered that UMDs have load times :lol

Am I LTTP?

This game is awesome, and makes me want to beat square enix until they remade ff7 on PSP or PS3 I don't care.

Beat this game just a few days ago.

I really enjoyed it, but I felt a little ambivalent towards it in its entirety. I mean, as I played, I occasionally thought things like, "Man, this game is so awesome" and so on. But as I continued throughout it, I couldn't help but feel a sense of emptiness with the game. I really loved FFVII, so I should have been stoked to orgasm with this game, right? Nope. It did rock, though. I just thought it'd be a little more...epic, I guess.

The ending was bittersweet and very well done. I thought they'd be too afraid to show how it really went down, showing us mere "glimpses," but when I saw what I did, I was shocked! The ending at least was a little slice of epic--like
the malfunctioning DMW, Zack being exhausted and injured--it really made you think, "Aw, fuck...this is it. Zack's going to die, and no one can help him :("

As I mentioned above, I was quite shocked with
us actually seeing how grisly Zack's death was. Oh, man...when that Shinra guard neared in on him and shot him, I was like, "=O!" Then of course you saw all that blood...! I'm glad nothing was edited! (At least I don't think so)

I REALLY loved the game's soundtrack. I thought it was amazing--especially the remix of "Those who Fight" and "One-Winged Angel." Of course, there were some great original tracks, too. In all, I think the soundtrack fit the game perfectly, and really helped set up some events with an "epic" flair.

Overall, I was pleased with the title.
