all of those times gief used his u2 in that video, it looked like he would have to anticipate the move coming rather than react to it. Still it looks like a good ultra.

That's key of course, but it's not like he can't just mash 720s in the air regardless of whether he does ultra or not. In that case, the only reaction he needs is the buttons themselves.

How long is the ultra active at the start?

Hold jab first.

You can even do cr.jab (hold) > s.mp (hold) > c.hp (release 2 buttons), etc.

Well yeah, aything that takes your body off the ground. I mean, you could already be air thrown out of hurricane kicks. But things that keep both feet firmly planted on the ground, it shouldn't have any ability to grab.

It's more for mindgames though - a good Gief only needs to do it once in a match to put the fear there.

Once they've put the fear there, they can jump in with his normals or do empty jumps to 360 - mindfucked every day basically.

Everyone's already afraid of getting close to Gief - now they have to be afraid of jumping/backdashing away too? Mindgames all day.

I don't know about that; most characters have decent normal AA attacks that don't take them in the air, and I'm really not sold that Geif's going to be able to hit that as a anti-anti-air on sight

Since it's only air-to-air, gief's ultra2 shouldn't be that bad against a grounded Dhalsim. Standard AA like b.mp, b.hk, yoga blast, and slide hk tripguard should stuff it...
