I cant even imagine how that studio is feeling right now. Probably just got off a couple weeks of overtime crunch only to be met with a crazy amount of hate one day before launch. Man... I'd be hitting the drinks hard tonight and looking at revamping my resume.
Isn't that kind of the case with every creative line of work? Even in shit movies goes often some hard work. It's cruel, but at the same time will people carry you on their shoulders if you succeed

Not to mention having to resist the urge to blame it all on the leak.

That's not what he meant and you know it. He meant that since he read reviews and saw what the game is really like on youtube, it's not worth his money and he doesn't need to spend the 70 dollars in order to have a "valid" opinion. It's in terms of him buying the game, not in terms of playing games in general. The restaurant analogy is similar to mediocre reviews at a restaurant your friend recommends, but you read those reviews as well as having a doggy bag from a different friend and you weren't impressed. There's no need to be obtuse.

The key in your counter-argument is "friend". My friend recommending something or not recommending something is much different than a forum opinion or a "professional" opinion which is what we're seeing here with The Order. I may trust my friend(s) judgement.

As far the other point, again, amazing how people are calling for apologies without even playing the game. My response was to that, specifically.

Disappointed by their game design philosophy on this. They should've designed mechanics, then $60 worth of well-paced gameplay (throw in replayability while you're at it), then weave their story around that. Then leave prepro.

With that said, I think the RAD team's next game will be fucking crazy. Hope they get the chance.

The hands on impressions from gaffers and the media were bad though.

Hmmm, I saw conflicting reports from GAFers - not sure about press I don't follow many of them so I may have missed their thoughts. Some GAFers praised it and some lambasted it (if I recall correctly). It definitely wasn't GOTY material, but I didn't think it would turn out this poorly in the end. After all people have varying opinions.

What's also intersting is even negative previews from the gaming press, they would go a week later and hype it up as "big game releases coming up in 2015".

See: http://www.gamespot.com/videos/what-are-the-biggest-games-of-2015/2300-6422896/

100 pages, impressive.

50 posts/page, disgusting. True page count is 50.

Holy shit, at the people talking about Sony greenlighting games and what not. You'd think people would like the fact that Sony is allowing devs to do what they want, no matter how "bad" it would be.

Nope.

If not every idea is being greenlit then it means that The Order took the place of something else.

Eh... I don't know. I personally didn't foresee it being bad until those gameplay videos were leaked and it showed what the game truly is a short, uninspired, QTE, snore-fest. Until then the little snippets we did get, looked like it had potential.

that is pretty much what they showed us every single time they showed the game. I don't know what people were seeing in those original gameplay videos other than that.

The byline on Jeff's review at Giant Bomb sums it up perfectly. The "bullying" comments from RAD are really embarrassing. A game length that would have earned them plenty of praise in the PSP days will not fly with a $60 console game.

If anyone needs to apologize it's Yoshida.

Why the hell would he green-light this game, given how outdated it is in everything but graphics.

The Order: 1886 has been reviewed, poorly, shortly before it was released. That's OK. Purchasing the game is not mandatory. No one needs to be offended.

The idea that someone would have to apologize for releasing a working product is utterly ludicrous. Get over yourself.

Interesting as most of the people on GAF who have actually played it enjoyed it. Yes its flaws have been outlined by those people as well but none of them said it was flat out bad which is what people are being led to believe. Shits weird.

There were plenty of previews that said it wasn't very good that explained why.

And although I know that this is kind of sacrilege to say, but I do actually trust videogame journalists who have to play games at trade shows for their job more than the average GAF poster.

It still comes down to sales numbers and their game has been pretty high on the Amazon hourly charts for days. Contrast that with a bomb like Driveclub that never climbed into the top 25 and mere days after release fell to around 500. Unless by "revamping my resume" you meant deleting this game from it. =)

As a company I think they're fine. They've done a lot of great work before this.

You apologize when the game is unplayable as intended, like the MCC.

You don't when the game plays as intended by the Devs, as seems to be the case with The Order

If a dev intends a game to play mediocre they get a pass? I think it's bad on both counts and on both counts people should vote with their wallet.

"There's a word for games like The Order: 1886. Rental."

Perfect. If you want people to buy your game, put things in there that want them to buy the game. Not an interactive movie.

Not everyone is so easily satisfied. I think most people just want good games.

Guys, there is plenty of positive to be plucked from these reviews that Ready at Dawn can throw up on any future ads:

EGM: ".... as impressive as anything seen.."
Kotaku: "...a game that combines the magic of cinematic technique with the graphical prowess of the PS4.."
Polygon: "...no better looking game on consoles."
Escapist: "...gorgeous, next generation graphics.."
Gamespot: "consistent, stylish visuals"
IGN: "...absolutely gorgeous and wondefully atmospheric.."

Man, this game combined with these reviews, combined with this thread...reminds me of the hype and later falloff of Killzone 1 for the PS2.

It's already happening.

Have you been under a rock for the last couple years?

Don't get me wrong, I was aware for years that this was the purpose of embargoes since day 1...

But not shipping out review copies is even worst, because it basically makes the embargo date = release day + days to finish the game... that's where I see things going now. It's just getting worst...

Publishers know when their games are good. We've seen games with no embergo or embargo a full week or more before release, and those games had glowing scores. When an embergo is the day before release, or no review copies are sent out at all, it should ONLY be taken as a sign for the worst... just assume a game is crap at that point and wait it out. And never pre-order anything.

I hate the "by the numbers" "well oiled machine" this industry is becoming...

Damn straight, son. No need to play the game.

I might start watching YouTube videos of games myself going forward. No need to play them. Actually playing games....overrated, if you ask me. Fuck it. I'm going to stop eating at restaurants too. I'm going to watch people eat at restaurants on YouTube as well.

You know what? Fuck, sex too. No need to have sex. I'm just going to watch porn for the rest of my life.

I'm sorry you can't tell the difference between something you'll like and something you won't without experiencing it first, but that's a thing a lot of people are perfectly capable of doing. I've been looking at the Order since it's released and barring the setting I could have told you the game play in this game was going to look bland since the first game play video. I've been playing video games long enough to be able to spot the way a game is going to be without having to actually play it. The same way I can see plenty of movie trailers and get a feeling if it's going to be terrible or not. I'm right far more often then I'm wrong. I don't need to actually go see Grown Ups 2 to tell that it's going to be a terrible movie. There are many factors at play that tell me that just by seeing a two minute trailer. I don't need to go play Sonic Boom to see that game was going to be a waste of my time.

If I go online and see pictures of the food from the restaurant you're talking about and it looks disgusting, I don't need to eat it to tell. If I look at game play videos of the Order online and the game play looks boring and linear, I don't need to actually go play the game to determine if that's true. There are enough impressions and videos out there for me to make that educated guess myself.

The irony here being that Polygon is actually middle of the pack.

Actually, at 55 it's a standard deviation below the median score of 70. I always find Metacritic's rating system interesting. For instance, in this case there are 19 reviews that are below their listed score of 66, while 20 of the scores have it at 75 or higher.

Fair enough, but if you're going to literally throw the entire review culture under the bus, that's on you, but getting on peoples case for reading reviews as well as checking footage of the game out in order to reach an opinion is asinine. If that's out of the way, then what's the solution? You can't make a decision unless you buy every game?

What bullying comments did Rad make?

No one should have to apologize for anything. RAD made the game they wanted to make, it seems the media do not like it at all. They made some very questionable design decisions but they made the game they wanted to make. It runs fine / doesn't crash your system / isn't a buggy mess. Its just likely, not all that good.

There is no reason to apologize, just hopefully they will work on their design choices for their next project.

Lol that overraction. Calm down dude!
He is not wrong! If the reviews confirmed what he doesnt like in a game (and almost every review were in a consesus this time) he doesnt need to spend 60 dollars (or whatever he pays in his country) to get himself frustrated.

I was fearing about this game replay value, and it got confirmed to be non-existent, also it was pretty much confirmed the game is indeed quite short (specially cutting off the cutscenes). So I wont risk paying 60 dollars (or 170 reais in Brazil, that is a lot of money) for that either. I may try it though if I find it for half of the price or less.

I was excited to get this game, was going to get it through amazon since I have 30 bucks in credit to use, but with the reviews and how short the game is, I think I will pass and get Kirby and the rainbow curse instead..what do you all think of DragonBall Xenoverse is that game worth getting and if so for what system(PS4 or XBOX ONE)

Now we are accusing people of astro-turfing when the entire outlook on this game for months has been negative.

Besides Driveclub and The Order? What other games have received such negative "opinions" before release?

Note: I'll reference this post, days before Bloodborne comes out. I expect nothing short of what's happened to Driveclub and The Order...for Bloodborne.

welp, i'll wait till it's bargain bin price. it's a shame, i was hoping it would be something more. next thing i got to look forward to is bloodborne.

There have been negative impressions at EVERY SINGLE EXPO this game was shown at. Not universally of course, there were some who liked it, but every time its been shown its been painted in a decently negative light by those who experienced it.

And because reviews are coming in super negative, and people are deciding not to spend 60 dollars of their hard earned money on a 6 - 8 hour game that has 3 hours of cutscenes then they are astro turfing. How ridiculous.

Oh please. You're acting like it doesn't exist and there aren't people here that never wanted to buy the game talking shit and enjoying every minute of this.
