The psp, who is getting it? If not why?

Yeah, that's getting posted in Drinky's thread fo' sho'.

Anyone have battery life specs on the other systems he mentioned? That could be amusing...

I refuse to pay more than $25 for a handheld game. It'd have to be something I was dying to play. I almost bought FF Dawn of Souls at Best Buy until I saw that it was $34.99. Ridiculous.

Not getting one in the near future, perhaps after someone gets Mega Drive (Genesis) and SCUMMVM emulation going then I'll consider it. The battery life is too low for me, since all my gaming nowadays is done on the go with the GBA. The screen concerns me, I'm terrible at keeping things scratch free - I bought a GBASP solely for that reason. Also, none of the games interest me in the slightest. If something like Disgaea comes out for the system I'll consider purchasing one sooner rather than later.

Any details on this? Will it not have the fucking confine system?

No details on it whatsoever. But since I love every Nippon Ichi Strategy RPG so far with a passion I don't care what system it has ;)

They're some of my favorite games this generation.

I have a feeling that this has become Phantom Kingdom...

Hm. Interesting perspective.

But I believe at some point Nippon Ichi specifically mentioned that the PSP game is still in the works.

There's something about these forums that compels people to buy consoles they don't necessarily want.

That being said, I'm curious to see if the US launch unit will be better than the Japanese one, so odds are I'll pick up a US unit then. Would be kinda neat to see if they can communicate with one another wirelessly.

IAWTP

Nippon Ichi = my system seller

I'm definately not getting one til maybe later next year.

When DS and PSP launch in Europe, I *may* get a DS at that time. But if they're gonna rip off UKers again, stuff that. I'll get a PSP shortly after that.

By the way: I saw PSP for the first time in the flesh today! CEC in Liverpool has one in the window for £350. A LOT smaller than I imagined. It does look great! Had Ridge Racers running on it.

I don't know. Probably not. At least not for a while. The best thing to do is to wait to see what kind of software is available a couple months after launch. If I see that 'must have game', I'll probably buy one on pure impulse. More likely, I'll stick to my GBSP. We shall see.

Not right away.

Why? Because Sony makes crappy hardware and I'm afraid it will break on me if I get a launch system.

Not getting one... but the missus has already decided SHE wants one at launch...(all she plays on the PS2 is Dynasty Warriors... but she's addicted to that... or was before the baby came).

Likely year from launch, same as DS. When they have exclusive content coming out at a fair pace that appeals to me like rpgs I be there :)

It was $24.99 last week at Circuit City. You missed out.

I'm not getting a PSP for the sole lack of money for it. I had to scrape enough of my free money for the DS just so I could get games for Christmas. Now, I have just enough if not less than enough money to buy games I want for the consoles I currently have. My wallet cries in advance.

I would purchase this if it was cheap enough. Heh, I'll keep my eye on the deals. Oh, and I don't have any products that would benefit getting a Sony memory stick, so movie and song playback would be rather slim for me. *Cries*

Maybe at US launch with a product replacement plan. ..Which might take ages to replace anyway. It's really nice but at the same tme its a launch sony product. You're just burning your money on faulty hardware D:

I'm not, largely on account of my mistrust of Sony's hardware reliability, a lack of interest in any software outside of Ridge Racer and Lumines, and a general lack of affection for the device. I won't use an ounce of its features outside of its game playing abilities and I wasn't blown away by it at E3; it seems like a nice device, but throw me in the late adopter group on this one.

I'm really interested but the problems with the Japanese launch has made me a bit cynical... hopefully I'll get lucky and not deal with those problems (I've never really had any problems with my PS1 or PS2, knock on wood), or hopefully they'll fix those problems before the US launch. I'm just gonna wait till it gets to the US launch.

WITH all honesty; probably NOT.

Why?

I am currently a purely PC Gamer even though I've owned practically every console there was. Most recently, I had a GCN which I sold after beating MP, I had a PS2 which I sold after beating FFX, and I had a GBA which I sold after beating Fire Emblem. For some reason, at the end of the Dreamcast era, I just got sick of the type of gaming home consoles offered up. If I buy a console, I only end up selling it a couple of months later. PC gaming just seems to offer me something that consoles can't give me. I'm not sure, but I think it has to do with the fact that PCs are so much more versatile with it's options.

So, you probably see where this is heading. The PSP, as I see it, so far looks just like GBA; just a portable version of a home console with a couple of extra whistles and bells. Knowing myself, if I bought one I know I would just end up selling it a couple of months later.

If I buy a portable in the near future, it will most likely be a DS depending on how much it differs from traditional handheld consoles(traditional handheld = offers up more of what's found on home consoles but on a smaller screen). I'll recognize Mario64-DS as a tech demo for now, but if DS turns out to be just a GBA with N64 graphics and ports, I won't bother.

GameFAQs is, at any given moment, full of whatever type of fan is winning the polls on the front page. And those fans are always the only ones who are cheating on the polls as well. Either way, <insert fanboy group of the day here> always wins polls on gamefaqs.

Just thought I'd get that out of the way.

I like gaming, but not to the point where I have to play games when I'm not at home. Besides, there's other things I can do such as read or listen to music. Thus, in order for me to buy a handheld it has to (a) provide an experience I can't get on a console AND/OR (b) make it really easy to reap the benefits of portability. The PSP does neither.

We already know it doesn't do (a). In fact, it's main goal is recreating the 'PS2 experience'. It can never succeed, but it can come reasonably close. That leaves (b). IMO, if you're going to go to make a handheld that strives to be like the PS2, then it should be able to play the PS2's games. Could Sony have made such a handheld that appealed to the masses? I don't know, but it's also not my problem. If they couldn't do it, they should've strived for (a) or a handheld that does high end 2D gaming. Otherwise, I'm left asking: Why should I spend X dollars for a machine that has games that, if it didn't exist, would've likely been made for the PS2 (better) or PS3 (much better)?

For the sake of balance, I could go into why I don't want a DS as well, but this isn't the thread for it...

I'll get it when it's available domestically and I don't have to pay for crazy mark-ups due to shortage. More interesting game lineup wouldn't hurt... but if WE is out for PSP, then I'd snatch it up right away, no hesitation.

same goes to DS. I am interested, but I'm willing to wait till the holiday craze is over.

Not getting one in the near future, don't need it (or any other portable) and no game for it so far is making me want it. Ridge Racers certainly looks nice, but then if I need an RR fix I have plenty of Ridge Racers in my collection already, as well as Darkstalkers 3 for PS1.

But I'm mildly interested in it in the long term. When and if that screen is used to do a high-quality, R-Type Delta-ish horizontal shooter, then my shooter-fan wallet probably won't be able to avoid opening itself and buying that and the PSP to play it...and probably grab a discounted Ridge Racers along with it.

can you prove that there is cheating on the polls?
Uh, you need to adjust your sarcasm detector. I was just getting the claim out of the way in as sarcastic a way as possible because the Usual Suspects are going to be all over that sooner or later.

I'm getting it and it's not for the games. I just want to use it to watch videos (music videos from my pc) and hear music (since I'm not buying an ipod any time soon.)

i will probably get one, but not now...

why yes ?
cause there will probably be good games on it.

why not now ?
cause it's not available, there are not enough (interesting) games and that the hardware is not finished.

I have an Archos av480 and I'm buying an Alienware laptop in a few months. The need for it decreased once that price hike happened

- UMD movies = bleh besides selection will be crap
- Nothing is really interesting software wise
- MP3 playback = i already have an mp3 player. a better one.

Basically the same for me. I'd add that it's a bit too expensive for something I'd only play only a couple times a month. It would take some killer games for me to get excited about the PSP, right now, meh.

Add in memory stick cost and I'm right there with you. It's such a sexy piece of hardware, but no games appeals to me outside of Makai Wars (depending how THAT turns out too) right now.
