The Waggle-Free Nintendo Wii Appreciation/Collectors Thread

FYI, Entertainmart in Arlington, TX is clearing their Wii inventory. Most games have been marked down to $4.99. Best time ever to buy for that system. Once inventory is gone, then I expect prices to swing over to the outrageous from now until the end of time.

With the amount of quality horror games, this would've been very fitting. :)

With the Wii it comes down to the two Fatal Frame games, Night of the Sacrifice, Ju-On and Other M with its heavy horror influence for me.

the X360 on the other hand is pretty much just the first Dead Rising, Alone in the Dark, and Deadly Premonition

After that neither console comes out all that well really. I could see the argument going both ways in all honesty

Problem with Reggie pushing the Wii is that the best stuff never made it to the states.

You should be burned at the stake for leaving out Shattered Memories. (and forgetting that Wii also had REmake, RE0, RE4, Dead Space Extraction (plus also Dead Rising and Alone in the Dark :P)

I'm on the "Shattered Memories is a giant pile of shit" train and I try not to include ports/BC. You got me on Dead Space though. It's actually the only Dead Space game I think is any good.

I always wonder about the Wii version of Alone in the Dark. I love the X360 game and I would totally be down with playing it with the wiimote and nunchuk but I just never pulled the trigger on it.

I stupidly sold my copy (alone in the dark) before playing it because I just wanted the soundtrack that came with it.

I'm ignoring what you said about Shattered Memories because otherwise the rage will keep me awake and I need to sleep soon :P

Dead Rising is not a port, though. It's more of a redo, really. And REmake and RE0 aren't BC category, Capcom released proper ports but yea they fall through your filter there I guess. Ignoring the still bestest version of RE4 is a crime, though.

Repeat offender.

I don't think RE4 is all that great even if I did include ports. It does play like a dream on the Wii though. Dead Rising I might give a shot one of these days.

Alone in the Dark on the Wii is mostly the same as the other versions but just really downgraded with a bunch of Wiimote gimmicks. I've played the entire thing from beginning to end and it's just painful playing it and seeing all the potential and the game being such a hot mess. I did buy the Limited Edition of the game because I wanted the extras more than anything.

Also, people hating on Shattered Memories. I don't get it. Personally I absolutely loved and thought it was a great game. Just the chase sequences were a bit annoying. Sure you might think that it's a poor retelling of the original, but I loved playing it as an alternate version to the original where
the bad ending is actually canon and Shattered Memories is a recreation of what Alessa think her father was like instead of what he was actually like
.

RE4 Wii is one of the absolute best games ever and still unmatched in its genre. I have no idea how anybody can disagree with that. Best version of an absolute masterpiece.

My top 100 games of all time would probably give you a stroke in all honesty. It's the stuff of nightmares as far as Neogaf is concerned.

That I'm fine with. It's more that you hate everything that's good. :D

Is this a good time to say that I think both of the Galaxy games are average?

On topic: are the RE lightgun games worth picking up over the PS3 versions?

Good timing, I was already asleep. Now I can use this to keep me awake during the day. :P

Umbrella Chronicles and Darkside Chronicles are the same except for the obvious HD difference.

So I lent No More Heroes a long time ago to a friend and when he returned it in them mail it got lost.

What made it even worse was we traded; my No More Heroes for his Silent Hill: Shattered Memories but I was too lazy and never even touched it before returning it.

To this day it still remains one of my biggest bummers. It still remains one of my favorite games on the system.

Just bought a copy of Kororinpa Marble Mania, woop. That's a game that's been on my want list for a while now. I'm excited to play it, I love tilt games like it.

I think I'm closing in on 50 Wii games now... and there's still at least 20 I want to pick up and try out at some point or another. Definitely my largest collection and I still have so much to play x_x
I think I'm gonna go for the Trauma Center games next whenever I clear out some more games. Currently playing No More Heroes finally and it's great.

Well, if you're not into RE4's storyline or aesthetics or whatever but love how it plays on the Wii and are thinking about picking up Dead Rising: Chop 'Til You Drop, you're in luck, because the game is a port of Dead Rising's assets into the Wii RE4 engine.

ran into some extra money today and ended up picking up Dead Rising. It's not really Dead Rising but as long as I think of it as 10$ DLC expansion to RE4 it works.

I have to say I like some of the changes to the mechanics though. Stuns being tied to headshots and not having stupidly overpowered melee attacks, so far anyway, is a gigantic improvement for me. I'm not rolling in ammo either which I was worried about since it seemed more like it might be more firearm focused.

Just a random thought that a few other people have already touched on in this thread... But, over the past few weeks I feel like I've fallen in love with my Wii again.

I had never been more excited for a system in my life in the time up until it launched. I had a great time originally, through about 2007; but as time went on I started to become more and more frustrated with the system.

I was constantly judging the system for what it didn't do rather than looking at what it offered. But now I'm really looking into the library and I really feel like I overlooked the amount of great games there are.

I had always though that the Wii was a step back from the gamecube, library wise, but I'm really starting to backtrack on that.

I just got a Wii recently to finally play all the GameCube games I never played because I only had a PS2 back then, and then I found this thread.

Is there a reason only No More Heroes 2 is highlighted in this thread?

They are both good but the sequel is much better. Both are worth playing though.

The first one had a clunky open world element; the sequel is more streamlined and has these awesome 8-bit minigames which are a better break up of the action.

The GC was one of the big reasons I almost quit playing video games and the Wii single-handedly brought me back. I had actually completely ignored the thing until I played Wii Sports and ended up getting one for Christmas. The library really is something else as it's one of those consoles that benefits from digging around and trying out all sorts of obscure little titles in addition to the bigger stuff. It's probably the last console where the term hidden gem actually means something.

The Wii library beats out the GC for me because of the much better first-party output, the wider selection of third-party stuff and the various collaborative efforts Nintendo put together for it. Most of the third-party stuff it did miss out on didn't really interest me so I was perfectly fine with the more experimental/off-beat stuff that it did get.

The GC was pretty much a Capcom/multiplayer/multiplat machine for me and not much else.

For my money Nintendo during the Wii/DS era is the best they've been and I don't see them ever getting back there.

I held off on the Wii until 2010 due to waggle but I was really pleasantly surprised to find that you could pretty much treat it as GameCube 2.0 for the most part. A lot of the best games were sideways remote, supported Classic Controller/Pro or GameCube controller, or had nunchuck with unobtrusive pointer controls + minor waggle at most.

There's a surprising depth to the library that was missing on GC though. Plus it was a great home for mid-budget experiments that just continually failed on the HD twins.

I've been feeling the same way. Never really fell out of love with it or anything but I've been reminiscing about it a lot the last month or two and have been buying and playing some of the games I missed out on, especially while most of them are still so cheap. Just finished Trauma Center SO tonight actually, great game. Kororinpa and Klonoa are next up I'm thinking. Or I can finish up No More Heroes...

I can kinda see where people come from when they say it didn't have a ton of heavy hitters or all time classics (even if I disagree) but it's got so much in terms of unique and offbeat b-tier type stuff, it's crazy. There's no other system with a games library quite like the Wii's I feel like, for better and for worse. It's honestly one of my all time favorite systems and second only to SNES for me in terms of Nintendo home consoles. Depending on the day it's my most favorite. I suppose nostalgia is a bit of a factor there though. :)

I think my collection is a bit past 50 at this point and I have a wish list of at least 25 games or more I'd like to pick up for it at some point that continues to grow. Definitely gonna be my biggest or one of my biggest VG collections when all is said and done.

I disagree.
The sequel is more polished but at the cost of losing the soul of the first game.
I do believe that it's the original game to be the real "cult classic" in the series while the sequel felt just a parody of the need to do a sequel.

This. No More Heroes 2 was really disappointing for me for the reasons you bring up. I barely remember a single boss battle from that game, yet I remember nearly all of the first game's vividly.

They all felt like events in No More Heroes as the build up to each one consisted of long and arduous work. But that work was also fun in its own right - those disdained jobs were designed in a way that they were replayable and mastery was in reach with every chapter.

Question... why is the thread title "Waggle Free" Wii appreciation collectors thread? Most of my favorite games on the system use motion controls and the notion that they're just bad is fucking stupid.

Yeah, I think even waggle controls had their purpose in being a specifically tactile method of input. I couldn't imagine doing a spin jump in Mario Galaxy if it were set to a button. It would work, but it wouldn't *feel* right.

Kimmy Howell, Matt Helms, Captain Vladimir and to an extent (get hype!) Skelter Helter were great.

I also add that to me removing the overworld (as barren as it was in NMH1) and replacing it with shallow NES-like mini games was a mistake.
It helped the world-building in the first game IMO.

This seems like an ok thread to pose this question

After seeing Mario in the switch reveal it inspired me to finally play the galaxy games, bought a wii at launch but motion controls got tiring to me very fast.

My question is, how well do the galaxy games play on the wiiu? I think both run at 480p widescreen, but any issues with the system upscaling?

You get a small boost in image quality if the upscaler in your TV is inferior than the one in the WiiU.
You still need the wiimote to play it I'm afraid.
The trick with using extensively the wiimote to aiming is to rest your elbow on a surface.
Truth to be told, SMG 1&2 don't require extensive use of the aiming.

EDIT2:
Ah I forgot about VC but as I understand you still need to use the wiimote.
EDIT:
Unless you are talking about the spin move.
Do it gently, it work the same.

because OP has a silly waggle and Other M bias that has no business here.

I don't even know if I'd call it more polished. The combat is dumbed down, the closet is bugged forcing you to rebuy clothes, and large portions of the game feel incomplete or missing because their reaction to the first games criticisms was to just remove stuff. Which would be fine if they replaced it with something else but they didn'tt. Hell, I don't even know why bothered with the shop since you buy almost nothing there. The new jobs still fall into the same trap as the first the first game where you just repeat the same job over and over because it makes so much more money than anything else. Hell, the one side-quest the game has doesn't even have a payoff to it.

To me every element of the game was a step back from the original.

They're waggle-free cuz they don't force you to waggle a second joystick around for camera control/aiming/interacting with the environment.

I think I am more optimistic about Nintendo's future here than you but with Wii and DS, yeah I'd say it's hard to argue against it being the strongest era for them since the Super Nintendo with all things considered. And pretty much, it'll be very tough for them to get back to the multiple "hidden gem"/"B-tier" type library the Wii and DS have, but with all their efforts consolidated on one platform now, I have hope we'll see more b-tier, AA, offbeat games from Nintendo and even Japanese third parties. But I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I've been feeling the same way. Never really fell out of love with it or anything but I've been reminiscing about it a lot the last month or two and have been buying and playing some of the games I missed out on, especially while most of them are still so cheap. Yeah, I just counted where my Library is at and I was surprised I almost have 40 games. But I have a similarly large wish list as well. Now is totally the perfect time to jump on the Wii because I was surprised scrolling through amazon just how cheap so many of the games I have an eye on still are. Like I think the most expensive games on my list are Arc Rise Fantasia and Rune Factory 4, which are like around thirty bucks each. Collecting for pretty much any other older Nintendo system, 30-40 bucks for any game of note is like the standard entry fee lol. Still isn't on SNES level for me at all, but it has gone up the list for me lately. Having Nostalgia for that really great 06/07 has helped as well.

Is Arc Rise Fantasia any good?

It's a pretty solid rpg once you turn off the voices. It doesn't reinvent the wheel but the mechanics are solid and leveling up and tweaking characters is pretty fun. I enjoyed it quite a bit myself.

So I'm trying out some different games and I've come to the conclusion that 2D games seem to look the best on my HDTV. WarioWare and Taiko no Tatsujin look wonderful despite being in 480p for example, whereas anything 3D and particular anything trying to look realistic doesn't hold up well. I need to play more games though - I haven't spent much time using it on a HD set overall.
