I'm just hoping the WiiU does something to get the japanese out of their HD slump.

That was one of my personal hopes...

Wii U being close to current gen.. and Nintendo well.. being in the HD race would help out Japanese developers who were just getting accustom to the tech or.. took forever to get stuff up and running..

I know only a pipe dream, but I hope this helps them return to glory.

The video streaming thing is very much targeting the Japanese market. Whether or not it succeeds is another thing.

That would be...beautiful. I just had my first dream about E3. Nintendo ended the show with a trailer for their big holiday game, which was Super Smash Bros. The end of the trailer had Mickey Mouse and Darkwing Duck. I now want Darkwing Duck in smash bros.

Epic Darkwing Duck confirmed!! :D ... Not. :(

Aaah! I just read the E3 Signage thread, and all the talk about the past Nintendo booths have really hyped me! I can't wait to see what they did this year!! O_O
Nintendo always such awesome booths.

The gaming industry could do a lot worse than CoD being its most popular franchise.

The games are quality and incredibly addictive.

Alkaline,

I apologise for this but on an unrelated note, being the inventor/discoverer of the E3 bear, do you have anything this year that will top that because you are under some real pressure to top last years efforts.

Back on topic but is CoD the most played game, I thought it would be Angry Birds..... ahahahaha I can't finish it.

Stupid question, but would Nintendo put someone on watch for this place?

they do have people that monitor message boards and social media.

there have been plenty of times that GAF has been asked to delete threads/posts at the request of companies and complied

HD guys can you believe it?

:D

okay that is as far as my hype goes

Nintendo in HD has been hard to wrap my head around. Every time I think about it, I just see Dolphin screenshots of Wii or GC games even though I own both HD consoles that are currently out. Nintendo working with more horsepower than the PS3 has been hard to comprehend.

Does anyone think this thread will explode today sometime until the Nintendo conference starts?

Konami's Presentation starts in about 3-4 hours so E3 really starts today for many of us. Then the nintendo crates sometime today and hopefully a leak or two about specific nintendo related stuff. Is it possible if this thread can move out of community and into the main page for the next few days when the other sub forums are split off?

About the Wii U discs

We know that Wii U will use a "proprietary" disc format (in quotes because it's a bluray with small alterations, like how the files are written on it, the encryption method, etc.), planned to be able to store up to 25GB of data, according to Katsuya Egushi.

It was in an interview from one year ago though.

A small info, linked to my previous message talking about third-parties burning their E3 2012 demos on this optical media:

- All the proprietary Wii U discs received recently by developers are really 25GB (so they didn't made the format so much proprietary that the space would be 20GB in the end in an unlikely example)
- None of them received 50GB discs.

Context time

- Note that my info come from a few sources, working in different studios, so it reinforces the fact that 25GB is a standard.
- Some of the games involved are huge in size (with FMV/CGI, etc.) but not to a point to fill up those discs (more like 10GB).

Assumption/Speculation

25 GB discs are certainly single layer "bluray", it's not sure if Nintendo choose an optical drive that could only read single layer discs (if they exists, and i assume the advantages, like savings, etc, are minimal, compare to the widespread drives capable of reading dual layer bluray) or not. The Wii could read dual layer DVD so i don't know why Big N would limit themselves to single layer bluray, but it's not sure for the moment, as every discs currently in possession of third-parties are 25GB. Maybe when they'll need more room later, Nintendo will release 50GB discs.

Yup, I strongly suspect that it'll be similar to the Wii with regards to dual layer discs, if we don't get dual layer discs usable via a firmware update I'll be very surprised.

Question for anyone out there that has handled the Wii U controller:

When it comes to the triggers, do your index fingers rest on "L" and "R", and do your middle fingers rest on "ZL" and "ZR"? That would be awesome.

Or is it more like PS3 where you use your left index finger for both "L1" and "L2"?
I've never been able to decide how to place my fingers on the 360 shoulder buttons, neither way is comfortable.

I'm pretty sure there won't ever be a need for 50GB discs. Only a small percentage of 360 games have come on more than one DVD this gen, and very few PS3 games use most of the blu ray (usually data is repeated to speed up load times I believe). Don't forget that many first-party Wii games were no more than a couple of gigs in size, I don't think the jump to HD will mean they will suddenly be filling up 25GB discs!

I'm sure the only Nintendo games taking advantage of the extra space will be Super Smash Bros and maybe Metroid and I highly doubt they will be more than 15GB

Does reading to the second layer not need any extra hardware? Is it just firmware that will need changing? This will not be needed until the first 25GB plus games are released so as to maximise the life of the drives probably so I guess we can have it down the line buit having it already implemented in the first firmware wont hurt in my view.

thanks

never seen this show... better go check it out after I get some subway

Its a bi-monthly show where she discusses games coming out etc. She has an interview with Warren Spector on Epic Mickey 2 etc. Its fun stuff. New episode came out today but no E3 stuff.

99% chance 50GB support is already in but Nintendo is not gonna send out 50GB discs or anything when Games arent using it. Just like the 3DS supports 8GB cards but nowhere to be seen yet. I look forward to seeing what Nintendo does with all the space. I imagine most of their games wont ever approach the 8GB mark let alone 25

Blizzard working on consoles? Suddenly that WoW rumor starts to sound possible. Or was it debunked? Well that, along with the MMO potential means they've got something along those lines. I predict I will be correct in my predictions.

Hopefully the graphics improve enough to make it happen

and no... I'm not talking about realistic graphics. Nintendo's art styles still
have a lot of room for improvement :p

just watch them do the same thing as the gc and wii u where every screenshot was awful and jaggy because of the method used

Except Ubisoft, who will deliver glorious bullshots.

I never watch GT.TV, and Spike isn't available where I live... Is there a way to watch tonight show and the Konami conference Live somewhere on the internet? will they be on the Gametrailer website?

yeah... pretty HARD

anyway I am afraid to watch anything Konami later and not find a single WiiU title or WiiU port

I'm kinda curious. I mean, we're going to find-out soon enough anyway, one way or another. This will be a moment of truth - but just for Konami.

The time period between this evening and the end of E3 will be a big moment of truth. That's part of the thrill of this event. I like the idea that, after tonight, I will know whether to pay any attention to Konami for this generation. That's pretty neat. :)

konami conference on g4tv.com, gttv clips will be online AFTER the show airs.

Um, the reason games on those systems look like that is because the games aren't HD, and your TV has to convert them to its native resolution. Just going HD fixes that.

Depends on how you look at it. I'm playing Mario 3D Land now and I don't see anything that really catches my eye as needing any work except some occasional aliasing.

There are definitely things that could be done to improve their games that require more juice. As far as I'm concerned the style they're using now is perfect and needs basially 0 improvement though.

I am personally just hoping to the gaming gods Kojima shows off Project Ogre. Not Wii U related but hey, that's all that matters to me. Also the endlessly sad hope that Suikoden VI might get announced.
