The Witcher 3 | Review Thread

Do you have a link? Because that's a pretty absurd idea.

I do not, sorry friend. Maybe Tovarisc does?

I think Q&A where I heard dev talk about skillpoint resets, and places of power ones getting wiped, was one they held on GOG. They have since deleted VOD of that session so I have no way of checking. Even then I do swear that it's what dev has said.

Yeah, it looks pretty much the same, but shorter animations, less bullshit and more responsiveness alone go a long way in making the combat more fun, I'm sure.

Different XP rewards on different difficulty settings and no XP from killing foes is kind of lame too, I feel like it makes choosing what difficulty to start on a bit harder. I dunno, I guess I'll just go with the "normal" one. If combat turns out to be actually fun, I'll crank it up, if it's as unfun as it was in TW2, I'll turn it down. Thank god for difficulty settings you can change on fly.

As far we know you don't any XP for just farming monsters on any difficulty setting. If this has been changed give me some sources :b

Oh, I didn't mean to imply anything like that, just happened to throw it there in the middle of all the difficulty setting talk lol.

I just wish we'd get exp for killing enemies. Even a very small amount is fine.

Can you import your Witcher 2 savegame file into the game? Is that feature available on PC?

No XP for killing foes is actually a really good idea and I´ll explain why.
In an open world game it is pretty hard to balance the game, because of that most of them use lvl scaling, like Skyrim.
Witcher 3 doesn´t use that, so if you could get an unlimited amount of XP from respawning foes, you could get a much to high lvl to fast and the game gets much to easy.
But with removing XP from defeated foes there is a set amount of XP you can get, so the game can be balanced around that.

I agree, that it is not such a good idea to include the amount of XP you get into the difficulty settings, a far better solution would be to seperate it.
At the moment it is impossible to play the game with a moderate difficulty, while also be able to explore a lot without to out lvl everything to fast.
It is also impossible to have a real challenge while only playing the main story.

Yup, it also removes the disincentive to clear our monster nests. In 2 at the start of act one it would hurt you if you immediately took out the nekker nests. You would lose out on materials and exp farming.

This solves that.

Anyone know what happens in that interrogation scene if you have imported your file? Do you just get a summary, without the options to make choices? I can't remember every choice I made, haha.

afaik there is dev tweet floating around saying it just skips that part fully.

Jaja. Additionally, XP rewards for completing objectives prevents quest arcs being skewered in favour of the most violent approach over diplomacy and preservation. In other words, XP rewards for battles themselves mean every quest arc is more rewarding if you chose to maximise your kills.

The guy who made the FCR 2.0 mode changed The Witcher 2 XP rewards to this, rightfully arguing it encourages proper role playing in quests. As long as you complete the quest (and its various stages) the XP rewards are the same, leaving you free to pick the path you want without XP repercussions.

I think XP rewards for fighting has its place, but only within the right games. Works brilliantly in 'Souls for obvious reasons. But XP rewards for minute tasks is crazy difficult to balance, especially in narrative driven RPGs. Human Revolution would have benefited from XP rewards for quests, not kills/takedowns/exploration.

after you finish the main story you can still go back and do the side quests right? never played the witcher games

I was expected to get an Xbox One version and ya. Nothing, No response and no reason.

Might have already been mentioned but I was told the only copies sent out early were for folks who have dev kits of PS4.

PC copies and other retail copies wouldn't be sent out until MUCH closer to release.

In fact, here's the quote from the email:
Put simply: we have not started sending review code widely yet. At this point, only those people with debug/development PlayStation 4 consoles (which are not available to the general public) are able to receive and play the game at this early stage. That's a total of about 25 people in all of North America. If you have not received code yet, that means everything is functioning as expected! (and if you're not in North America, sorry that you're receiving this email... you still need to talk to your local publisher PR rep)

We are anticipating final review code to go out fairly close to launch, for all platforms. I realize it's not an ideal situation for such an extensive and anticipated game, but this is the situation we're in.

So there you go. Was hoping I'd have something to start playing this weekend to talk about on the show tomorrow, but that doesn't look likely.

Apologies if this has been asked/posted already, but is there an article or something that would give me an overview of the Witcher universe and lore?

I would be a complete newcomer going into W3, thanks!

Gonna be the longest weekend ever!

Time to get so drunk you'll wake up Tuesday morning with no recollection. As an extra, you'll probably hear a lot of embarrassing stuff about the weekend from friends/colleagues/family, so you'll have a good reason to stay cooped up for the rest of the week and just play Witcher 3.

I'm more interested in possible Witcher 3 character builds.

I know you can only equip 12 skills but how many skillpoints can you earn in the game and how many hybrid builds can you make.

I was hoping to spend 6 of my skill blocks in signs, 3 in attack, and 3 in alchemy.

You can.
In a video I watched there was a pop up telling him to hold X to run if the battle was too hard.
The player was getting destroyed by guards for stealing.

Oh nice stealing is in. It made me very uncomfortable in the Witcher 2 how you could just walk in anywhere and take things right in front of people.

We don't know what is max of skillpoints you can gain. Apparently devs have kept adjusting that and haven't been comfortable with telling us how many that is. We know for sure that we get 1 point / level up all the way to level 50.

Edit:
Yep US for me. On the xbox store its says its not playable until 12:01 UTC.

For you it should be either 5PM or 8PM on 18th depending on your coast, if I remember right.

Also nice to see more Finns on Neogaf

I wonder if silence in this incident is because skill builds will not allow that much customization. Getting to a third tier in a skill requires you to invest points into branches that you do not even care about. Like if I wanted all of the fast attacks skills, I need to invest in defense, slow attack and crossbow just to make it to the third tier for fast attack.

Someone on another forum said even if the game gets delivered early you won't be able to play it because pre-order versions require a day one patch released on Tuesday to play it. This is bullshit right?

He was talking about PC copy, that can't be played before 19th because it requires activation download. Console version works right out of the box.

So how 'bout that hockey yesterday

i am sorry :)

I'm actually a rare breed in the sense that unless I happen to be betting money on it or I'm out with friends in a bar that has a screen showing the game, I really don't care about hockey at all lol.

The reactions on Facebook and such are usually pretty priceless though

I think it's just in front of guards unfortunately.
You can steal with out fear from peoples houses.

I have never played any of the previous Witchers.

How's the combat? Is it similar to Dragon's Dogma and the Souls/Bloodborne Series? Or is it closer to Skyrim?

W2 had a watered down Dark Souls combat basically. W1 had an entirely different combat system which is nothing like W2 and 3.

Do we know how much lore there is to be found in the world outside of quests

Also, please tell me there is a treasure map equivalent. It's become common in open world games, but I still love them
