This thread is for stupid GAMING questions that don't deserve their own thread

I don't care if you spoil me and my experience, I just want to know before I get in too deep:
In Danganronpa, are certain characters destined to die or is the game more where you can try to save the ones you like?
You can put it in spoiler tags :)

They are destined to die, you cannot take different actions to save them.

Why is Mario called Mario? Why didn't Nintendo call him Gianluca?

http://www.technologizer.com/2010/04/25/mario/

Regarding Mario’s origins, it’s common knowledge among game fans that legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto created him for 1981’s Donkey Kong arcade game. But few know that Nintendo borrowed Mario’s name and Italian heritage from a real man.
That man’s name is Mario Segale, and he’s not a plumber. He’s a wealthy real estate developer in Tukwila, Washington. Segale unwittingly stepped into video game history by renting out a warehouse that served as Nintendo’s U.S. headquarters in the early 1980s. At that time, a financially struggling Nintendo of America (NOA) was preparing the U.S. launch of Donkey Kong. Legend has it that NOA President Minoru Arakawa noticed physical similarities between Donkey Kong’s short, dark-haired protagonist and the landlord. So the crew at NOA nicknamed the character Mario, and it stuck.

Well, you wouldn't use the charger with this (not sure if that's what you meant), just plug in the USB cable. I don't see why it wouldn't work, I just charge my Vita using some random USB wall charger, haven't had any problems. I've also charged it from my laptop, only some laptop USB ports don't provide enough power.
Thanks. I've got a 16 hour car ride to Chicago.

Just keep in mind you may have to turn the Vita off (completely) for it to charge from USB. At least, that is what's needed in my experience.

Not in my experience (unless you mean computer USB ports). I haven't used the 'official' charger that came with the Vita in a while (too bulky when travelling), and I also haven't turned it off in a while. As I mentioned above, some laptop USB ports don't provide sufficient power to charge the Vita, but most wall chargers do. USB 2.0 ports have, I think, something like 500 mA according to specification, while wall and car chargers usually have upwards of 700 mA, many have more than 1 A. I don't know right now what current the official Vita charger provides, but in the end it's just a standard USB wall charger. When travelling, I've mostly been using the charger that came with my phone (Samsung Galaxy) because it's a lot smaller and it's in my backpack anyway and at 1 A provides sufficient power to charge the Vita in stand-by.

The Vita usb charger works with these little guys, right?

The official Vita charger outputs at 1.5A [1500mA] so I'd probably try that car charger out before you go on the trip as it might not output enough juice. Reading through Ricki's post, it would seem to me that the Vita requires some odd amperage draw from its charger somewhat above your standard 0.5A but maybe below 1A? Still better to check beforehand then be without the means to charge it

You may want to get one labelled as ipad-compatible, they output 2A because the ipad needs at least that much to charge.

I just tried it with a charger that provides 0.7 A and the charging light on the Vita comes on. So at least anything between 0.7 and 1.5 A will work, it'll just take longer with less. As opticalmace pointed out above, if it's too low you might have to turn the Vita off to get it to charge. The other thing is how high you can go. Some chargers provide over 2 A, and I don't know if the Vita can handle that or if it has some kind of protection that prevents it from drawing too much.

Yes any car charger that can charge tablets should easily be able to charge a vita

It's okay if the charger provides lots of amperage headroom [i.e. greater than 1.5A] as the device will just take what it needs, too low amperage and it just won't charge at all but won't be damaged, too much it'll charge fine and be unaffected by the extra amperage. It's voltage that if you don't get right can damage your device, either too high or too low voltage as well.

I got a new hard drive for my PS4. It's in, but when I start it up, it asks for a USB drive with update 2.03 or later. I have a USB flash drive (FAT32, 10 of 16gb free) I try to use, but the update page ( http://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/system-updates/ps4/ ) has two update files (one from the blue "download now" button, one from the black "download now" bar near the bottom under "Perform a New Installation of the System Software". When I try to use the one from the blue button (about 207mb), my PS4 says the file can't be used. When I try the file from the black bar (about 740mb), my PS4 says it can't find the file.

If that made any sense, I could use some help with this. I'll provide more information if needed.

You'll definitely want the larger one from the black bar, that should be the complete system software. The smaller one is just an update file if you already have an older version of the software installed.
I don't know why it wouldn't find it. I'd probably try reformatting the USB drive and redownloading the file just to make sure.

New ps3 harddrive related question as well. Or rather with PS+ saves. Assuming I've uploaded my save files properly, redownloading them to a new and formatted HDD with the same accounts shouldn't be any problems right? I accidentally forgot about my ongoing FFX save I seriously don't want to lose at this point :lol

Or perhaps I can simply put them on an USB (FAT32)?

I used PS+ to back up my saves when I got a new harddrive. Works very well.
One thing, though: I don't remember if I had this issue with Vita or PS3, but be careful that some games have only one save slot and automatically create a new save when you start them, which will then be the newest save file. Auto-syncing saves could then overwrite your online save.

Hmm okay, thanks! I don't have the hard drive yet so it'll be a future problem, maybe after Xmas!

I formatted the flash drive and redownloaded the larger file. The file structure is "Flash Drive" -> PS4 -> UPDATE -> PS4UPDATE.PUP. Still didn't work, can't find file.

Update: I downloaded the system software file one more time, and the PS4 found it this time. Thanks for your help.

Here's a dumb question: When someone refers to something as GOAT - is it usually because they honestly think it's the greatest of all time or is GOAT supposed to imply sarcasm? I never know because sometimes... Sometimes I'm pretty sure it's sarcastic but I'm not sure.

It's usually sincere, just so effusive that it can sound facetious.

Which do you think would be a better game for a 16 year old...

Diablo 3 or sunset overdrive?

Neither game is on his radar at all but I think he'd like both. I want him to experience sunset overdrive because I think it's an amazing game but I feel like Diablo will have way more replay value (but I've never played it).

He's just your typical Xbox live shooter multiplayer gamer.

Is the WiiU a worthy purchase to someone that thinks Nintendo games are for kids? I'm currently 25, is it too late for me to get into games like Zelda and Mario that has never played those type of games in years?

I believe they have a certain Disney or Pixar quality to them that make them suitable for families rather than kids. Here's another question to ask: do you actually enjoy these series and games?

Absolutely. Unless "for kids" is your definition of a game having vibrant colours, because you won't find a lot of mature games with a dark and greyish colour pallet. Even Bayonetta 2 is very colourful compared to the first one, but it still has the same gore and everything you'd expect from a sequel.

Definitely enjoyed those type of films, and the films that inspired them (Hayao Miyazaki).

I don't doubt I would enjoy the story to some level but are Nintendo games varied enough in terms of gameplay to keep me engaged? I tried the first kingdom hearts and I just couldn't wrap my head around a game that revolved around having one attack button. I never seem to get into these games long enough to understand the draw of them. Am I missing something?

I'm a little older but not much. The themes in sunset will be more appealing, and I found diablo to be boring in all honesty - I'm very much in the minority though.

I'd say gameplay is Nintendo's expertise, so you can't go wrong as long as you don't expect heavy plots and stuff.

The Legend of Zelda series for example, since you stated you're interested, have lots of items and weapons you can set to different buttons and attack or just experiment with. There's more variety in that regard compared to one-button attack games you mentioned.

I never played Mario or Zelda (except a bit of Mario Bros on 2600 way back when), so I'm in a similar situation. But if you never had a Wii, Metroid Prime alone makes it worth it. Also, Metroid Fusion and Super Metroid on VC. There's more than just Zelda and Mario. Of course, if you have a Wii, a Wii U might not be worth it at this point. But for me, the main problem with the WiiU is that I don't have enough time to play it because it usually takes the backseat compared to PC and Playstation. But I don't regret buying it and I have plenty to play on it that doesn't involve Mario.

You can turn on the Wii U, select menu items, switch the menu with the wara wara plaza to show on tv with the pro controller. But I think it will also automatically turn on your wii u game pad as well when the system is turned on. You can go into settings and turn the game pad screen off but the pad will still be "on".
I just leave it on the charger at that point.

What you CAN do is turn the Wii u on manually (or perhaps with the pro, im not sure), and then as its booting hold the power button on the game pad. Gamepad is off, Wii u is on

Based off the bolded statement, I suspect he'd enjoy Sunset Overdrive more. Diablo 3 is a totally different genre (loot driven action-y RPG). If the idea of using skills that either rely on a resource cost or cooldown to kill tons of demons and get awesome weapons and armor sound appealing, he might like D3. Going through story mode on Normal difficulty would be a breeze and might leave him itching for more. He could up the difficulty for Adventure mode and try out multiple classes.

Are there any PC to _____ (Android, especially) game streaming apps/services, besides Steam's In-Home Streaming, that allow you to set the resolution the game should be rendered at on the PC? Because most of the time, the resolution seems to be based on the display... which you'll turn off, because you're playing on a different PC/tablet/whatever.

KinoConsole on Android. Works fairly well for 3D applications, it's similar to how the Nvidia Shield does it. But it's not perfect, there really aren't many solutions to this issue yet.

I've actually been trying to use KinoConsole, but the game resolution thing is one of my problems with it.

Would Steam be possible on a console?

Every time I ask this elsewhere I get blasted on the premise of the question itself, but let's suspend logic for a second, if Gaben woke up one day and decided to make a PS4 app that plays most Steam games, would that be even possible from a development standpoint or not because of the way games are coded for windows specifically? Would they have to actually emulate Windows on the PS4 within the software?

I heard PS4 has a very PC friendly development architecture.

I believe it would be more about money if all you needed was an app to access your library.

No it wont be possible. I mean yes they could do a steam app and stuff but your previous purchased games would not be compatible. And they would have to make future games compatible with ps4 somehow

The PS4 uses some derivative of Linux I believe so there would have to be some kind of emulation(which wouldn't perform that great) or the games would have to be recoded.

If you have a nvidia GPU, you could try gamestream and install limelight on your android device. It's free open-source, and from what I understand it let's you set the resolution in which the stream is encoded.

I'll give that a spin once I upgrade to a GTX 970, since my current GPU isn't Shield compatible AFAIK (it's a GTX 560 448 core).

Well yea I was just wondering if it was technologically possible

It would be similar to the current steam clients on Linux and Mac. It depends on whether the game has a port for the platform. But if the game has a PS4 port, then why go through Steam, it's just one more middle-man. Plus if the steam client has to be running, it requires additional system resources.

Of course it's possible PSNow does the same thing except with PS3 games, PC games should work too with a little work. But Sony would never let Valve put steam into PS4.

But for PSnow Sony built a server of PS3s. So Valve would have to build a huge server farm of Windows machines that then stream the games to people's PS4s. That's technically possible, but it has the same problems as PSnow: it's rather expensive to set up the infrastructure, and would be online only and the quality would depend on people's internet. It's more like in-home streaming, except not in-home.

Is there a way to turn off the annoying background music on the Wii U and the gamepad? At the moment I just turn the volume down, but I would like to know if someone is trying to contact me (e.g. Wii U chat).
