ZombiU (I am playing through it right now) received a diverse amount of reviews, with the majority in the average range. The game has some interesting (if not the most interesting) implementation if the Wii U Gamepad, but I will admit at first it was slightly disorientating knowing when to look at the Gamepad or the TV in the first hour or two. Fortunately, it becomes second nature. Although i loved how the inventory and menu were selected in realtime, there were not many situations except for looting where this was a factor in the increased tension or speed at which I had to carry out the tasks in the game. This is because I cleared most of the room out before I even attempted looting or scanning. I will admit, this did encourage methodical and careful clearing of areas. With regards to the melee combat, I found it poor. Melee hits on zombies are not affected by which body part you impact on, except for the head when the zombie is on the ground (it triggers a context short scene where the zombie is destroyed). I also do not appreciate the mapping of the melee weapon to one of the triggers (you hold ZL to ready and press ZR to hit). I felt my finger sometimes slipping or not pressing the trigger hard enough to execute a hit. However, these were only occurred very few times in the game and are more due to human error. Using the Wii U Gamepad to setup sniper shots and crossbow shots (ranged weapons) was more hassle than productive. I say this as a person who does not like to use dual analogue sticks for shooters.
I could go on, but what this game needed was more variation within the combat system, time with creating a few more diverse environments and situations as well as increasing the randomness factor.
