This thread is for stupid GAMING questions that don't deserve their own thread

So, my PS3 HDMI port just died for no reason, can't get it to work. I have the component cables and I have set it up to 1080p and it looks pretty much the same as it did with the HDMI. Will I lose anything using component instead of HDMI? Is it worth the hassle to send it somewhere to get it fixed or I'll be okay?

Component can't do 1080p. Max component can do is 720p/1080i. Make sure and look at your settings because you may be looking at the HDMI settings which you're not really using since it broke.

Honestly not really sure what you're "losing" when you play via component since most games on the PS3 are upscaled to 1080p anyway when using HDMI.

As far as getting it fixed, that's entirely up to you, where you live, and how much you're willing to spend. I'd say you'd be alright just sticking with component but make sure your settings are adjusted accordingly.

Yeah, I set it up to 720p, it looks pretty much like it did before. I get some strange purple ghosting around the text and there's some small interference when the image is completely dark, but it's pretty much unnoticeable. I'll stick with component for now, maybe try to get one of those red super slims in the future because those look awesome.

I want to buy the Hotline Miami 2 soundtrack, and it looks like Steam is the only place I can buy it. I am not a PC gamer and don't use Steam for anything other than giving gifts to friends. I was just looking at the page for the soundtrack and it says that I have to own the game to be able to play the soundtrack. Surely that's a mistake, right?

What's the best easily available PAL region Bomberman game, aside from PS1 Bomberman? Either disc based or Virtual Console/PSN is fine, along with Mega Drive, PS2 and GC.

Ideally one that has Louies in it, because they're always fun to use.

I'm going to give a slightly left-field suggestion of Bomberman '94 on the PC Engine. It's basically the same game as Mega Bomberman, but with the PC Engine's trademark five-player mode and I think it's on the Wii VC.

That said, I'm talking the older games, I'm not sure if one of the recent 8-player options would be a better bet.

Oh, that seems pretty cool actually. I may go for that one then. I'll probably only be playing 3 players for the most part anyway, so a high player count isn't super important.

What are my current options to play first gen Pokémon games? what do you recommend?

Red, Blue and Yellow are on 3DS on the eShop.
Gold, Silver and Crystal haven't been re-released, but Heart Gold/Soul Silver on the DS are probably the best way to experience those, and are probably two of the best Pokémon games ever.

The original games are available in original cart form and on 3DS VC. That said, I'd recommend the GBA remakes, FireRed and LeafGreen, over the originals. Red, Blue, and Yellow haven't really aged that well.

Currently, what defines a "casual gamer" at this time?

... I'm feeling kinda worried when while looking for parts for a new PC I heard myself saying "I'm not of a enough of a gaming enthusiast anymore to justify spending 1000€ on a gaming PC. PS4 should be more than enough for me."

That's moderate at most.

People who play exclusively mobile games and/or exclusively AAA dudebro console games.

And you don't have to spend a lot of money for a gaming PC. You can build something decent that does 1080p on medium/high for lower than you think.

I don't know. 4 years ago PC gaming was my life. I kept putting money towards my rig, would bring it to massive lanparties, I did the 52 games in a year challenge, and I could not tolerate anything under 60fps. I even was irritating with the "PC Gaming Master Race". Not counting the modding stage before that.

Nowadays? I haven't upgraded it in 4 years and I only use it for Diablo III and WoW (sometimes), and whenever I think about putting money into it I begin thinking: "You already have a gaming device you bought one year ago. and takes all of your time. Do you really need to spend that kind of money just for gaming at 60fps+ and high settings? You still can use Photoshop and Lightroom without issues".

Heck, yesterday I was even playing the RE Revelations 2 demo and thinking that the game would look better at 30fps. Whenever a friend comes home and start complaining about how The Witcher 3 runs on PS4, I simply answer "Eh, it's better than nothing".

I still haven't played a single mobile phone since the Carmaggedon port, never tried a Call of Duty, but between not caring about things such as quality and aiming for shorter and simpler games (Persona 4 Golden is going to take me another year at this pace), I feel like I am casualising myself.

Just play what you enjoy on whatever you have and don't worry about labels. If you are enjoying a certain game but know you'd enjoy it more if you can play it on high settings, or if there is a game you really want to play but can't because of your current setup, then you can think about upgrading.

Say I'm emulating on PC to my tv via HDMI - there should be no input lag right? I mean, that's one of the benefits to emulating right?

Depends on the TV.

Mine has terrible input lag, which surprisingly is the most noticeable ONLY with my PC...other consoles aren't that bad...but the PC...oof!

I have that LG since 5 years and I'm thinking about switching soon just because of how bad it is with input lag.

Anyone know what the best platform to play Evil Within is? I'm thinking of picking it up and I know the PC version had some issues at launch. Have these been resolved or should I just pick up the PS4 version?

Is the PS3 version of Bayonetta at the very least acceptable? I don't have a 360 and I'm not holding my breath for a PC version, as much as I'd like to play it at >60fps.

Seconding this. Of the available current gen platforms I only have an xbone. Is it playable?

Vita question:

How do I get my PS1 classic games to recognise my PS1 save data on Vita?

I plugged my Vita into my PS3, clicked on content manager, and copied the save data for Alundra onto my Vita.

When I look at my Vita's content manager I can see my Alundra save data is there, but when I fire up the game on Vita and press continue, the game says there is no saved data on the system, and puts me back to the new game screen

What did I do wrong?

It's definitely playable, it's the way I experienced the game first because I had no other option and I had no way to try the 360 version so I never knew it was considered a bad port.

I mean if you have played any of the other versions it's gonna feel sluggish at first, but there's nothing game breaking, you'll be fine.

I don't have my vita here, so I can't confirm it, but:

Theoretically you need to import the data you have copied into the virtual memory card?

I recently bought Devil's Third while I wait for Deus Ex and found the game to be rather fun. Sure the graphics aren't great, frame rate blows, gameplay is simple and the multiplayer is weak. My stupid gaming question is, do you think going into a game knowing its crappy ease the hype and actually make it more fun to play? I just found Devil's Third flat out entertaining to play and fun to tease the game for its short comings! Money well spent considering I've wasted 20 hours playing it for $29 compared to a $20-$40 movie date night with the wife watching Secret Life of Pets....

PS4 question:

I'll be traveling to my brother's place abroad and he has a PS4. Is it possible that I can link my PSN account and my PS4 save files to his PS4 so when I get there, I don't need to bring my PS4?

You can login using your PSN account on different PS4. As long as you subscribe to PS+ you can download your cloud file save into your brother's PS4.

I've went into this game expecting a fun but dumb game and with that I enjoyed myself immensely with it. It's not great, far from it, but it's middle of the road fun like we had in the six generation a lot.

Is there a way to view photos and video I've captured on XB1 on a PC? I googled but it's only giving me info on the Upload Studio app, which doesn't seem to help.

I've been playing some PS3 games again and good golly is it ever slow at some things. The store takes forever to launch and game installs like Yakuza 5 took over 30 minutes (probably longer, wasn't paying too much attention). I've done the simple stuff like restoring and rebuilding the file system but haven't seen much improvement.

I've had the first gen Seagate hybrid (7200rpm/750GB/8GB NAND) in there for 2 or so years. I thought about SSD but read that only has a limited benefit due to the PS3 using the SATA I interface. My PS3 is the first "slim" revision, I was wondering if the last PS3 revision is any faster? Anyone have any experience with these PS3 models?

I don't have an Xbone myself, so I'm not really sure about this, but I'm pretty sure my friend who does ended up having to get Gold to actually upload stuff. Even once he did that, I don't think it ended up being retroactive. I think it only worked for screenshots taken after he got Gold.

Castlevania SOTN question...

I'm replaying my PSX disc on my PS3 and the music volume seems pretty low in the mix compared to the sound effects. No volume options in the game.

Is this normal and I just dont recall or what? Is there some workaround to raise the mhsic volume somehow? I dont remember this being a thing at all last time I played it damn.

In a game that uses forward rendering, is there any IQ advantage to using SSAA (supersampling) over MSAA?

If yes, and assuming it's possible to describe in writing, what is the advantage? How much of a difference does it make?

Login to your Xbox Live account on Xbox.com and then go to your profile by clicking on your gamerpic in the top right corner and selecting Profile from the drop down menu. Scroll down on that profile page a little bit and you'll see your Game Clips and Screenshots. There are buttons there to View All for your clips and screenshots.

Calculated on the fly.

Nope, procedural content can be created beforehand and stored.

Procedurally generated means that it has been created by some kind of algorithm (the definition here can be quite broad) with as minimal manual input as possible (the algorithm usually always need at least a basic input to work with).

Classic example is procedurally creating landscape. You have an algorithm with rules about how things can be laid out (forest, rivers, seas, etc) that can generate a whole island for example. As opposed to someone manually placing all the trees and rocks and everything else.

Yes. MSAA will only help geometry aliasing where SSAA will also help with other type of alisaing like shader aliasing (sharp specular highlights aliasing for example). SSAA is also much more costly than regular MSAA implementations.
