Am I the only person to just notice a hands-free hand sanitizer dispenser today on campus? Boss.

How do you single/double space a SPECIFIC paragraph in Word? My paper is double-spaced, but I want to single space the quotes I have in there, but everytime I highlight it and try to single space it, it ends up changing the entire paper.

Are you hitting CTRL+1 after highlighting it?

A buddy of mine mentioned the Atari line from "Fuck You" was removed from the album version. I told him it was in the MP3 album version I grabbed from Amazon a few days ago. As it turns out, he was listening to the version NPR had available for streaming. A Google search for "Fuck You" NPR Atari finds at least one other person mentioning the difference, but not the why. Seemed like the right sort of query for this thread.

So I'm working on a little site that I'll be using to host some of my writing as a sort of portfolio. The problem I'm encountering is that some of the images I'm saving in Photoshop as JPEGs are sometimes in excess of 1mb each for a 760x200 image, for instance. And that's on medium compression settings. What is recommended image format for highest quality for lowest size? It's not going to be an image rich site but I'm worried that files of that size might be excessive. Help?

When I'm at the gas station and pay for $20 worth of gas, why does it only automatically put in $19.58 (or thereabouts?)? For the last few cents I have to manually hold down the handle.

It's not because my tank is full (today, for example, the E light was on), and it's really no big deal, but it always irks me when it happens. Just put the entire thing in! :)

Use the "Save for Web" feature, or set your files to 72ppi when creating them.

Sounds brokey broke to me, it always goes to 20 when I put in 20 (in Missouri).

Can somebody please explain me what does the period
"did you long for summertime\
when you were growing up?"
means in this song? i can't figure it out

London Elektricity - Just One Second (Apex Remix)
Isnt summertime a traditional western(U.S.) vacation time? I would hazard a guess they mean something like "Didnt you long for the times you were free of responsibilities and could do what you want when you grew up?"

Wait, are you asking what that line means? I'm a little confused when you ask what the "period" means. In any case, the line is basically asking, "did you wish/yearn for summertime when you were growing up?" :)

If you're asking about something else, then forgive my misunderstanding.

I'm gonna take a stab in the dark that when you were young, summer was your time of freedom away from the responsibility of school.

So, the question is "Did you long for summertime when you were growing up?"

Meaning:
Were you excited for Summer when you were young?

Speaking of which. I'm in the right spot for this I think:

Why are sports a part of news?

I would submit that sports are not news, they are entertainment. They don't belong in the news, or at least not as a separate equal segment in nightly newscasts, and more probably as a subsection of the entertainment section where it belongs. It's not like there is any shortage of sources for finding out that information; there are entire channels and countless feeds in dozens of formats, so why include it with things that actually happened (as opposed to, were played and/or watched)?

i got a small fish bone stuck somewhere behind my mouth. i can touch it but not for long since i get a crazy gag reflex. how the hell do i get rid of this thing? its driving me fucking crazy.

Fish it out and if you throw up, then you throw up. The bone will likely be gone anyway after a good puke. Or tweezers.

Probably as an item of national pride

All news is entertainment these days.

It's a tradition. And it makes sense because you can turn the news on one day and find out about the things that matter; as it turns out, sports matter to a lot of people. So it is very convenient to have results listed inside the news.

Putting sports into the entertainment section thins that section out and makes it inconsistent (it's mostly about numbers and shit, where entertainment is about shocks and tits).

Ok got one. I just tried the "Chunky Soup" version of New England clam chowder and it was awful. Anyone got a good suggestion for packaged clam chowder that isn't atrocious?

Why is it always 'pair of pants'?

Like, you're packing for a trip and your friend tells you to bring two pairs of pants. This would imply you need 4 pants but it's highly likely he just means 2 pants. Does he mean both legs of the one pants come together to form a pair?

I was also going to ask why it's always 'pants' instead of 'pant' but Wikipedia answers that, I guess.

Various people in the fashion industry use the word pant instead of pants. This is nonstandard usage. The word "pants" is a plurale tantum, always in plural form—much like the words "scissors" and "tongs".[2]

Trousers, slacks, jeans, panties, briefs, boxers.

Possibly apocryphal, but:

According to several costume historians who have helped me with this reply, the answer to all this conventional plurality is very simple. Before the days of modern tailoring, such garments, whether underwear or outerwear, were indeed made in two parts, one for each leg. The pieces were put on each leg separately and then wrapped and tied or belted at the waist (just like cowboys’ chaps). The plural usage persisted out of habit even after the garments had become physically one piece.

Thanks for your answers, now i've understand better those lyrics.

I am a newbie here. Is there a 'what are you listening to' or music thread in the off-topic section? I'd like a link.

My parents have been bugging me to get netflix on their TV (CRT) for a while now. They have a PC, but hooking it up to their TV wouldn't really be ideal. What would be the cheapest netflix streaming device for a CRT? Right now I'm leaning towards a used wii.

Progresso's used to be goo but it's too diced up for my tastes now.

I would like Chunky's actually, but I really just like the restaurant stuff.

Ratings. Weather & sports (Particularly local sports which gets no national coverage are big draws to the local news.

Everything that is newsworthy is part of the news though which is why we know so much about Lindsey Lohan. I think sports is a step up.

Actually, sports cover the whole gamut of news such as business, celebrity, society, pride, success, & failure. You can't lose with all that drama going on.

http://www.roku.com/netflixplayer/

Comes with a remote too.

My parents have (or had -- I don't know if they still use it) a Roku, and I never heard a complaint about it. It probably is the best, cheapest option if your parents are going to stay with an SDTV.

As an alternative suggestion for futureproofing: I just picked up a recertified WD TV Live. It lacks the wifi that the Roku HD has but it includes USB ports and does 1080p (Roku HD apparently does only 720p). According to reviews, it supports more file formats if you want to stream from a computer as well (and it does it very well, in my experience), though that could have since changed via software updates. Source code is openly published for both, so both can be well modded, I understand. This may not be important to you, though. :)

I'm using a Wii in my basement for media. I can't make any claims about its Netflix capabilities, but I can attest that it streams video quite well over its otherwise gimped wifi connection (as an aside, the WiiMC interface is far, far superior to the one that the WD TV Live uses, but that is once again not amazingly useful to your situation).

Both the WD TV Live and the Wii also come with a remote. ;P

why do people put "-age" at the end of threads titles? and does "g/a/f?" stand for anything?
Germany/Australia/Florida

Where much of the messed up news comes from.

I know the answer to your first question, but I'm not sure how to explain it. Maybe someone else will.

When someone makes a thread, is there a difference between THREAD TITLE-GAF and THREAD TITLE-Age?
Yes, I would say so, however the difference is somewhat subtle. The content of the threads generally have no differences though.

*-GAF calls upon the group of people who are related to the topic. For example, USA-GAF are members from the United States, Athiest-GAF are members who are atheists, and so on.

*-Age makes more sense in the context of an event and the thread calls upon all members. For example, USA-Age might be about someone travelling abroad to the United States, or Athest-Age might be someone who is considering Athiesm, and so on.

Or maybe I'm just reading into things too much!
