I remember hearing about a battery (re)charger that can be used for regular batteries, not just for rechargeable ones. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Already got the Eneloop system.

I want to read a book concerning evolution (to the level where it's for an intellectual not for the common man) that's not a textbook. I was considering reading Origin of Species but is that too old to be considered relevant to the modern theory of evolution? Should I read some things from Stephen Jay Gould or Dawkins? And if so, which books?

Facebook related question: I just signed up again after removing my account a few years ago (full removal, not deactivation). As soon as I logged into the account there were two friend requests(people I previous friended from the old account). I'm curious as know if there's some sort of automated friend request sender inside of facebook?

Is there some kind of plug in for google chrome that does the following

* IRC chat in a tab (i currently use irc2go which sucks. i am looking for something like operas irc client)

what is a good chrome extension to block specific images from the internet? I am getting tired of seeing that cat gif koodo posts constantly.

(cue cat gif in 3....2....)

The Greatest Show on Earth (Dawkins) is a really great read!

Gould's Hen's Teeth and Horse's Toes is good, although I think it's written well enough for most readers to be fine with, not just people with science backgrounds.

Just WHY exactly can you not replicate the Vault Sequence at the end of Fast Five?
Depends on the weight of the vault, the horsepower of the cars, the amount of traction the wheels have, etc. I'm very skeptical of them being able to pull it out of the concrete in the first place. The other big problem is taking turns, especially the 180 kamikaze turn that Vin Diesel does when he unlatches Walker on the bridge, there's a lot of inertia there.

Somebody should do the math of how much the vault should weigh and from there you can figure out how possible the whole thing is.

it's lulzsec bro, Burn your computer to protect yourself.

My boss asked me to put together a video promoting a July 4th theme day at work. What's a good movie, tv show or other source where I can find a bunch of Americana themed video content? I'm after some footage of soaring eagles, Mt Rushmore, Statue of Liberty...that sort of stuff.

I've been wondering this for awhile.

So if two burglars happen to break into the same house at the same time (i.e, one through the back and one through the front) and the meet in the middle of the house, who has the right of way?

My friend had me listen to this song where either the intro and random parts played clips from I believe night of the living dead. I'm pretty sure it was a metal song, possibly instrumental.

The one with the gun.

Can you legally put notes on a car if they are not threatening in nature? There has been a seemingly abandoned car parked (legally) right across from my driveway when there is PLENTY of curbspace (we're talking unlimited space to park that is not impeding pulling out of a driveway). Co-worker says that would constitute harassment.

Make sure you leave a door or window open though, you could die otherwise.
Nah, fan death only happens when you're sleeping at night.

Also, I think you have to be Korean for it to work.

Has it been there a month? If so, it probably counts as abandoned (could be more or less depending on where you live). In that case, call up your local police to report it. They'll put a note on the car and then tow it if it's still there 3 days later.

Does a broken light bulb still use electricity? Like, if it's burnt out or smashed, but still screwed in its socket will it use the same amount of power it would if it was fixed?

Also, is there anywhere I can buy spicy chocolate?

It's been like a week. We asked all of our surrounding neighbors and no one seems to know who it belongs to. It has an Indiana license plate but we live in NY. All of the registration stickers in the windshield have been torn off.

My wife notified the police last night and they came out to check it out, but won't do anything because the car is parked legally. It's just annoying when they have about 200 feet of clear curb space, they park directly behind my driveway and it makes backing out of it difficult.

So my sister works for Rogers (a big cable company in Canada), and in about 3 months, will be getting a nice discount on any Roger's services. It is basically a discount for employees and their families. When this discount kicks in, I plan on getting an iPhone with them (which will mean a 3 year contract). Question: If my sister ever decides to leave the company while I still have a contract with them, will that discount still apply, or will it go back to the normal price? I'm thinking it will stay since I'm locked in a contract, and the price should be the same. But on the other hand, it is a discount being applied to the price, and why would they still allow me (and her) to have the discount if she is no longer there.

Anyone have any experience with this?

My friend was in a similar situation, but he got a discount because he worked at Best Buy. I can't remember which phone company (we're in Canada, though) but I remember him specifically saying "I shouldn't be getting the discount anymore, but they don't know I don't work there anymore"

Not sure if he just got lucky, or if that's how it works with Best Buy (I doubt Telus/Rogers/whoever is gonna call up Best Buy to find out if the person with the discounted plan is still working there)

There's a text tool I'd like to have, and could probably program a pretty decent one myself. However, it seems incredibly unlikely to me that there isn't already a better one in existence--I just can't find it. Any suggestions? What I want to do is take fixed-width text files and either un-fix them, or convert them to a new fixed width.

Simple combining of lines like
Code:
The first version of this guide. All of the walkthrough is completed. The only
things missing are the encounter data for Pokemon encountered through either
Surf or fishing (though I have made reference to some of them in the actual area
to

is pretty easy, but it would be nice if the tool was also smart enough to recognize beginning characters as a sign of a quote or sub-section, so that
Code:
> "WHAT?! Why, you.... you.... demon!"
> A third woman's voice joins the chorus. "Will you two please stop
>it! I mean, what's done is done, and there's no use arguing about
>it if it's already done, right?"
could be converted to
Code:
> "WHAT?! Why, you.... you....
> demon!"
> A third woman's voice joins
>the chorus. "Will you two
>please stop it! I mean,
>what's done is done, and
>there's no use arguing about
>it if it's already done,

or whatever other given width.

Equalizer settings...how do they work?

Seriously. I never understood the settings of each of the positions of say a "Rock" preset vs a "Jazz" preset.

I believe the bars represent tone and bass, but that's just out of messing around in winamp...

It adjusts the volume of various frequencies within the audio. So if you turn up all the nobs on the left that'd be increasing the volume of the low (bass) notes in the song.

The presets are just a selection of settings that someone decided makes that genre of music sound good.

So I take it that those frequencies at 1k and higher are for the high (treble) notes then. Thanks for the info.
