Thoughts on Revs Backwards Compatibility

I'm not sure this has been touched on (who am I kidding, this is GAF). Couple of things on Rev's supposed backwards compatibilty. I'm not an uber techie, but I'm just trying to speculate.. anyway..

Isn't it likely that GC BC compatibility won't really have to be emulated given the similar system core (IBM cpu(s) & ATI/Artx gpu(s))? Having said that, isn't it feasible to assume that with proper restraints put in place limiting GC games at 60fps (this is nice because it might improve some slower games), that the GC experience could really be improved on Rev?

A number of features that might get implemented if possible:
- Upscaling to HD resolution
- Antialiasing & Anisotropic Filtering
- Unique smart shader options effecting the appearance of the games (if 3rd party devs would allow it). Remember the filters from Far Cry?

Am I way out to lunch to assume some of this might be possible? I guess it would depend on whether or not the sound subsystem was compatible too.

We might get somewhat better looking GCN games, à la PlayStation 2. Nothing exciting, but interesting features like the display options with GB Player... Does PS2 "emulates" PSX, or is it done differently?

I'm not the uber hardware-wiz but i think it's totally possible. IBM could add a "Gecko mode" in the CPU ( same thing for the ATI and the Flipper ).

It could have some compatibility problems though.

A pure low level emulation would give you 100% compatibility.

Increased resolution/texture filtering are the only improvement I could see.

PS2 use the PSX CPU as an IO cpu. So the hardware is in there. Im' not sure how the GTE ans SPU are emulated though.

What I am dreaming of (and I am talking about dream here, I am CON-VINCE this could NEVER happen)... forward compatibility!

Games released for Revolution, but that could be played on GameCube with toned down polygon numbers and features... Exactly like PC Gaming!

I'm not an expert, but I don't think that's gonna happen.

Besides, most, if not all, Revolution games will probably use the Revolution's special features.

Anyone else think that Nintendo will screw with us by not letting us plug GCN memory cards into the Revolution without buying an add-on? :lol

I never thought of that. The memory card slots will most likely be the same, the memory cards for the revolution will just be a more reasonable size.

The 12cm Revolution disc would not fit in the Gamecube.

Alright, I will walk you through this... PC Games for recent computers sometimes comes on multiple CDs, even thought advanced computers have DVD drive. Why is it so?

Are you saying that Nintendo would release two versions of the game, one 12 cm and another 8cm? NOT going to happen. Besides, Nintendo would want to sell Revolution hardwares. Not softwares that you would play on a lesser system.

Unless we get a Revolution Player add-on for the Cube ;)

No. Why would they need to release a 12 cm version of all the games? The Revolution can read smaller disc. Alright, forget it... I'm probably too open minded for you...
