It is crazy how much I love Bleach (started with the anime) but on the othet hand I get very angry when I think for how many years Kubo is screwing everything up.

Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own
I think this Tumblr post does a good job going over the issues for the ending.

Basically,
none of the fates of the final cast match up with their character development across the series, tons of plot threads were unfinished, relationships are all borked.

Nah even with the degree of same face that tends to be exhibited in Kubo's art I'd still call him a good character artist. Maybe I give him so much props (on this particular front) because he's so willing to include People of Color as major characters in his work and they look good/cool instead of weird/racist caricatures (though there is one exception I recall which was kind of unfortunate :/). That's a bar 90% of manga authors can't clear.

I just....I just wanted him to do more with tousen, ya know?

Tousen was straight up one of my favorite captains alongside zaraki and toshiro

Good video. Surprised he didn't mention Kubo's handicap of "if I don't know how to advance the plot, I just make a bunch of characters" which also lead to the downfall. It started with the Visords, then the Arrancar, then the servants of the Arrancar, then the Fullbringers, and then the Vandenreich, which was the biggest mistake when Kubo planned out 26 of them at a minimum. He knew he fucked up early when he had Kenpachi kill 3 off-screen.

So was this wild ride worth it? I don't even remember where I left off in Bleach

Nope. It's a whole lot of nothing.

Actually... now that I've been thinking about, I could probably rationalize some points.

- Ichigo was 15 when this started, and 17 when he beat Yhwach. Both times could be just due to being a teenager, and the former would be BEFORE becoming a shinigami and the latter while he lacked his powers, he probably would've been content staying as a substitute in town and living as a human otherwise, not necessarily going on to become a captain or anything.

- Uryu's big beef seemed to stem from thinking his father was butchering his mother's corpse, when it was really to extract what would allow them to get their revenge. That's still pretty warped, but might've brought some resolution to that for him to accept wanting to be a doctor again rather than being completely put off by what seemed to be warped sentimentality.

- Yeah, the thing with Chad's kind of bullshit. Still, at least his original issue was picking on people and starting fights just to be a bully, so making a formal profession out of it and entertaining people's a hell of a lot better than being a thug at least, though it's not really in defense of anything but maybe Japan's name in boxing on the global stage or some nonsense.

- Can't really defend the lack of Ichigo/Rukia interacting besides the fact they may not have had much reason to do so during the war, but that ends up being more a larger scope issue of too many characters diluting things.

I also could plausibly see Kasui and Ichika not knowing each other just by not being brought into the other world until they were, like, 3 or 4 or whatever they are now. Rukia not keeping an eye on her however...

I'd actually argue it started with the Soul Reapers themselves.

I'm doing a whole series reread and while I was going through the Soul Society arc (particularly the earlier parts), he introduces so many low-ranked Soul Reapers. I mean, its fine to introduce mooks, but he gave names and designated ranks to damn near all of the ones who had a speaking role at some point.

Like, why did we need to know about Toshimori Umesada (9th squad, 20th seat) or Tatsufusa Enjoji (8th squad, 3rd seat)? The former only showed up to creep on Orihime when she and Ishida were undercover as Soul Reapers and the latter just existed to get sucker punched by Chad. They didn't need to be given names at all, really. Or that brother of Jidanbou that jobbed to Ishida. Or the fact that those giants even exist.

edit: And don't forget how even some of the higher ranking soul reapers didn't really get to do much. Remember Yamamoto's LT? He got taken out by Ichigo and then got killed by Yhwach's forces. Oh and he had BANKAI.

Only if you were following weekly and had an angle of morbid fascination (or willing to read for curiosity but accepting he may completely fuck up and fail to answer relevant questions.) I wouldn't dive in before other stuff.

Oh wow, it really was that bad early on... Been years since I read that part.

Ah yes, the endless fungled battle between creators and editors. The video also made me realize how I miss Kubo's early artwork in Bleach; the repeated compositions, character designs and facial reactions in his later work is even more noticeable. I'm sure Kubo used Ichigo's usual 'shocked' face at least 100 times in the final two arcs.

I was definitely enjoying rereading this, I'll admit, but even in my reread I"m all "I don't need to know the names of all these mooks. Why are you giving this one a title card, even?"

The giants still kinda baffle me. Jidanbou at least had some involvement, but then he came back to just hold off the three other giants, and...I don't think he ever showed up again, did he?

Anyways, I'm in the Hueco Mundo arc now. This was touched upon some days/weeks back, but one thing I really do like about Bleach are the chapter titles. Kubo really goes all out on them, they're so varied and strange at times (personal favorite is still Superchunky from Hell). And I'm a big fan of the poetry throughout.

Not only handsome, also just plain the best. Aizen carried the manga, even in his absence sometimes. Dude knew he was the most handsome creature in Bleach canon, that's why even when fighting he prioritized elegance with those deliberate swings. There will likely never be another.
They made him too strong. Super strength, intellect, and an ability that manipulates everyone's perceptions?

Yeah, the set-up for his defeat was going to be disappointing no matter what and had to be out-of-character.

What? You guys doubt that the Getsuga Tenshou will do the job? If that didn't work, all Ichigo had to do was more training to do super duper Getsuga Tenshou. Nothing beats the almighty Getsuga Tenshou. The biggest twist in the last arc was that Quincy Hitler didn't die to an Ultimate Shinigami Quincy Vaizard Fullbring Getsuga Tenshou.

That tumblr post uses bae unironically. I cannot read it.

They actually make pretty solid points

Ichika's last name should be Abarai because Renji is the father. Doesn't matter if Rukia is nobility or not. She's adopted anyway

Relationship woes are the least of this ending's problems, as well

Nobility is a big deal. It's not uncommon in Japan to go with the name that has the higher status, even if it's coming from the woman.

Byakuya wouldnt let the abarai name ruin his niece.

13 out of how many? Chart seems kind of misleading.

There can be anywhere from 12-17 series ranked at anytime, since those that have Color Pages and Cover position don't get a rank. For most of the last 2 years Bleach was part of the bottom 3 spots, which are the chopping block ranks. For 2015, Bleach only got the Cover position once (not including the 3/4 issues that had every character on the cover) compared to 6 Bleach only Cover positions in 2007.

Is Ichigo's "move set" the worst of all anime for a main character?

Probably. Just getsuga and recently gran rey cero. Because of this, his fights are boring because he can only fight his opponents head on. Even if you only have one ability you could still find quirks to add some variations to it.

Surprised Naruto even stayed that popular tbh. How did the war arc not burn people out?
Funny enough, that decline in the graph is basically just the war arc

Considering he was amazed by white-Ichigo's revolutionary idea of swinging Zangetsu by the cloth (something that I think he never actually did afterward, anyway), yes, yes it is.

LOL holy fuck that goddamn drop.

Anyone know what happened in 08-10 to see the drop then gain?

2008 was well into the Hueco Mundo mess. Roughly around Nel's true form reveal (that was in July 2008, for the record).

2010 was the end of that whole arc, Aizen's defeat, etc.

In some ways it does feel like beating Aizen was the de facto ending. Ichigo reached his absolute peak, the long term main villain was fought and defeated, and Ichigo lost his powers.

Didn't even matter too much that the Soul King question came up given the resolution we got there.

Yes. I don't think he has ever done something unique or creative with his skills. Which is disappointing since Ichigo becomes whatever the arc is about. You would think between the Soul Reaper, Quincy, Vizard, and Fullbring powers he would be able to combine them in some interesting ways. But nope.

He's also the most boring. I can't think of a major shonen main character with less personality. It isn't even that Ichigo has bad personality traits like, oh let's say Goku, who sometimes puts finding new challenges above living a normal life. Ichigo barely has a personality at all. He wants to protect his friends and is a bit of a tough guy, I guess?

Ichigo is very fun MC at early, nothing new.. but he's funny, loud, and expressive.. he became suddenly very somber and kinda stoic after soul society is very disappointing.
