thee childhood. *sigh*

Damn.

About half that front row is dead.

Man, not even into wrestling that much, but used to watch it at my cousin's house all the time. Just now watched some Piper's Pit on YouTube and started getting the feels.

61 is way too young. :(

I loved Roddy Piper. Roddy was one of those heel wrestlers that you just loved despite the fact that his character was a complete jerk. He could insult a wrestler in such a funny manner that you would be laughing too even as you were booing him. Almost more of a cartoon persona than real life villain, he'd always find a way to entertain you even if he was making you angry. Here's to "Hot Rod"! One of the very best.

Here's a pic of me and Piper taken at San Diego Comic Con about four years ago. It's crazy to think he's gone now. 61 is still pretty young.

Well damn, he was one of the best on the mic.

What he meant to the rise of wrestling in the 80's was enormous.

R.I.P.

I say everyone should watch the pilot to Tag Team which should be on YouTube. It's also got Jessir Ventura.

RIP Hot Rod

I remember enduring all those wresting shows on Saturday mornings, the ones where star wrestlers was paired with a no name in every match, and only one good match between 2 stars was allowed that tied into the monthly MSG event.

I would watch all that for Piper's pit.

Saw the news on TV, I'm shocked. Just saw him in an interview on youtube about the Hogan debacle like two days ago. He seemed a little off (or high) but otherwise fine. He is going to be sorely missed.

Piper was incredible on the mic. His in-ring work was fine, but I was mesmorized as a kid listening to him speak. Plus, They Live! Please watch that if somehow it has passed you by.

RIP

I'm happy i got see him at a few live events throughout the past couple of years. Such a fucking bummer, seemed like a great dude and family man.

RIP Hot Rod.

Was gutted to hear this news when I woke up this morning. Went out and got a prepaid Amazon.jp card from a nearby combini not long after so I could order this awesome boxset.

RIP to a wrestling legend and a fine fellow "Glaswegian" :(

So very sad. Met Piper in my hometown, New Castle, Indiana, several months ago, as he was in investing in a restaurant project being worked on in the renovation of a historical old building in town. He was speaking at a town council meeting about his decision to invest. He spoke glowingly about my town, and the kinship he felt with our residents in the days he'd spent getting acquainted with this place. He was completely accessible, spoke with EVERYONE who wanted his time, lingering for over an hour for photos and autographs, and whatever else folks were interested in. Later in the spring, he wrote an unsolicited endorsement for candidates in election primaries who'd been helpful to him while he was here.

He was absolutely one of those guys who turned out to be an even better person up close than the guy I'd admired across the last 35 or so years. I'm glad I met him, and I'm heartbroken for my town that he will not be a part of its fabric into the future...

RIP. The last two years or so have been pretty awful for celebrity deaths. I only knew him from They Live and Hell comes to Frogtown since wrestling isn't popular at all in the Netherlands.

Nice looking release, but the second disc has art from Assault on Precinct 13 lol. I have the Region B Studio Canal Zavvi exclusive steelbook (with a minor paintchip :( ) released in November last year. It's quite a nice release with slightly worse picture quality compared to the Japanese release, but with all the special features from the god awful looking US release. Unfortunately it sold out a few weeks ago.

IIRC they caught the cancer early and they were able to get rid of it pretty quickly. I don't think it had anything to do with this, just really shitty luck on his part.
It's likely a big mixture of things. The scheduling he went through in the 70's and 80's (he stopped being a full-timer though in the late 80's), drugs, the cancer. It's all still sad because 61 still isn't very old at all.

Haha, I thought something was off about that second disc. Would be nice if Assault On Precinct 13 was accidentally included. Love me some John Carpenter. Shame the quality of his films dropped off big time after releasing so many amazing films in the 70s and 80s.

Totally sucks about Piper, still can't believe it. There was just one compilation DVD from the WWF/WWE that I bought and, of course, it was Piper's Born to Controversy compilation. Pretty much the only one worth owning IMO. Man was beyond a legend. RIP Roddy, hope you're performing the Pit up there with the big man. You will be missed.

I never got to see his work much, but I loved his podcast. His old timer stories were great. I thought standup comic Inappropriate Earl was a good complement as a regular on the show. You can tell he revered Piper as a fan and a friend.

I was checking out Earl's podcast and found an interview of Piper he did a couple months ago. At one point, he asks Roddy about the connection he has with his wrestler friends who have passed away. Roddy gets emotional recounting a story about hanging in a hotel room with Kerry Von Erich and Big Boss Man drops by. Then he says "All of these guys are dead except me." I teared up thinking he's together with his old friends again.

Inappropriate Earl just posted a new podcast episode tribute to Rowdy Roddy Piper. I haven't heard it yet but I know it will be a fitting tribute to his friend and our hero.

Just read about this news now, very sad indeed. He was an amazing talent on the mic and one of the best ever for sure. Never understood why he didnt get a run with the belt back in his prime. RIP-.

So who is still alive of the classic WWF 80s era?

Hulk Hogan lulz
Hillbilly Jim
Jimmy Snoka
Ted Diabese
Iron Sheik
Bobby Heenan
Tito Santana

Jake the Snake
Honkey Tonk Man
Ricky Steamboat

I've been watching a lot of old ppvs from the late 80s to early 90s and its crazy how nearly every other match features someone that is dead. In a few cases both participants are guys that are dead. Imagine watching like, the 1992 NBA all star game and having half the roster be made up of guys that died in their 40s.

Wrestlemania 6 has a match with both wrestlers and both managers dead.
